Oregon, United States, WINE

Buy Oregon wines for the lowest prices at Woodland Hills Wine Co.

Oregon's Willamette Valley is well on its way to world-class status. Viticulture emerged here only in the 1960s, but the region has proven itself to be an ideal counterweight to Napa Valley by producing arguably the best Pinot Noir wines in the United States. The cool, foggy climate and volcanic soils are perfect for this varietal, and the geography shows enough variation to justify the designation of six sub-AVAs: Dundee Hills, Ribbon Ridge, Yamhill Carlton, Eola-Amity Hills, Chehalem Mountains, and McMinnville. If Napa is America's answer to Bordeaux, then Willamette Valley is certainly its Burgundian counterpart.

The Pinot Noir wines produced in Willamette are distinctive for their suave, elegant textures and their hallmark earthy characteristics, reminscient of forest floor, damp earth, and mushrooms. Although the region is known best for its Pinot Noir wines, the cadre of small growers have also learned to excel with many other varietals. Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling all fare very well in the moderate climate just west of the Cascade Mountains, but it's Pinot Gris that seems to have claimed the throne as Oregon's top white grape, producing wines of intense aromatics much more akin to those of Alsace rather than the Italian style with which so many wine drinkers are familiar.
