If Tuscany is Italy's unanimous champion of red wines, then Campania certainly bears that title for white wines. South of Liguria, along the west coast and centered around Naples, this is quite possibly Italy's oldest wine region with roots dating to the 12th Century B.C.

The region's most respected white wines are made from a few of the many, many indigenous varietals that grow in the finest DOCGs encompassed by the greater Irpinia DOC. The Fiano di Avellino DOCG is perhaps the best-known, thanks to its characteristic pure, fruit-driven wines from the ancient Fiano grape. The mineral-rich volcanic soils here serve to temper that lush opulence with a smoky, spicy tinge and lively acidity. Rivalling Fiano di Avellino in terms of prestige is the Greco di Tufo DOCG. The best vines grow at higher altitudes than those in Avellino, in even more volcanic, minerally soils. Cooler temperatures and bright, sunny days allow for characteristic acidity and moderate ripeness, and the wines surely display more of their mineral foundations than those of Avellino. Falanghina is a slightly secondary, but equally important, white grape that finds wonderful expression in the stunningly picturesque Costa d'Amalfi DOC, and forms the backbone of many Campania IGT white blends.

Given the prominence of white wines here, one might be surprised to find that Campania's most distinguished wines are arguably the full-bore, densely flavored, immensely structured reds made from the Aglianico grape. The Taurasi DOCG is indisputably the finest expression of this quintessentially Italian varietal, with wines that simultaneously display flavors of dark, rich red and black fruits as well as elemental nuances of smoke, leather, and game. Much like the wines of Barolo, Taurasi wines are famously long-lived and require a great deal of patience to show their fullest potential.

With such a broad range of grape varietals, micro-climates, and soil types, its no wonder that Campania offers perhaps the most diverse spectrum of wine styles in Italy, made all the more attractive by the nearly universal affordability of even its most revered wines.

Importer notes: Campania is now my favorite white wine region of Italy, and Picariello is one of the reasons. When young, The Irpinia Fiano is a second selection and shows essentially the same characteristics as the DOCG but with less dramatic mineral and stony notes, perfect for current drinking. ...
