Italy's wine history was cemented in antiquity when the ancient Greeks dubbed the peninsula "oenotria", a reference to the Boot's ideal climates and topography for growing grapes. Today, Italy is one of the three most important wine producing countries in the world, next to the United States and France. Until a few years ago, Italy was the world's largest producer by volume, until France claimed that spot. However, the sheer number of indigenous grape varietals in Italy is unrivaled.

While vines are grown nearly everywhere on the peninsula, there are a handful of regions that have distinguished themselves as sources of world-class wine. Tuscany is perhaps Italy's most famous wine-growing area and its most scenic. The Sangiovese-based wines of Chianti are the most well-known, but Brunello di Montalcino is considered the apex of quality for Tuscan Sangiovese. The Bordeaux varietal "Super Tuscan" blends are also among the world's most collectible red wines.

Just north, Piedmont is the home of Italy's most regal red varietal, Nebbiolo, and the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco are highly coveted for their inimitable aromatics and age-worthy structure. The Barbera grape also thrives here in the Asti and Alba zones. Meanwhile, several other regions have also carved out specialties, including the steely, refreshing white wines of Friuli, Marche, and Alto-Adige, and the rustic, old-school red wines of Umbria, Campania, and the Veneto. With such a lengthy latitudinal distribution and so many distinct micro-climates, Italy is the most varied and unique wine-producing nation on Earth.
