Viticulture in France dates to Roman times, and evidence of this heritage can be found all across the country. Just south and east of there, the gentle slopes and continental climate of Burgundy produce not only the world's best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but arguably the world's best wines, period. The southwestern, maritime region of Bordeaux is one of the world's largest, geographically speaking, and its reputation for epic wines is second to none. The region's top Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot-based wines are among the most ageworthy and expensive bottlings on the market. Along the southern coast, the hot, Mediterranean climates of Languedoc-Roussillon, Rhône, and Provence produce big, opulent Grenache and Syrah-based wines, as well as the world's most famous rosés. Truly, France stands unmatched in the world of wine.
