Mourvèdre/Monastrell, Carménère, Chile, WINE

Buy Chilean wine for the lowest prices at Woodland Hills Wine Co.

The long, narrow strip of Chile has often been called a "winemaker's paradise" thanks most importantly to the absence of the phylloxera plague, which was never able to surmount the barrier of the Andes mountains, but also to its myriad climatic influences and topographical diversity. The country's latitudinal range suggests these variations would occur as one moved north and south, but in truth, the real differences lie in an east to west orientation.

Along the coast, the Humboldt Current in the Pacific brings cooling breezes and maritime influence, which accounts for the grassy, racy Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays of Casablanca and Leyda, as well as some very bright versions of Pinot Noir. Chile's most important regions lie up and down its Central Valley, sheltered by the Coastal Range from the influences that define the cooler, maritime regions. Maipo, which abuts the metropolis of Santiago, is the hottest of them all and houses many of Chile's original and most recognizable estates. Bordeaux varietals thrive on the broad, flat plain, but they can acheive world-class complexity a little higher up in the Andean foothills to the east, especially true for Chile's signature varietal, Carmenère.

A little further south in Colchagua, the clay and limestone soils are specifically suited to Merlot, where the elevations allow the wines to develop not only depth and concentration, but also wonderful vibrance and structure. The southernmost region in the Central Valley is also Chile's oldest. The Maule Valley sits on predominantly volcanic soils and Cabernet Sauvignon is its most important varietal, but Carmenère and Merlot also display individualistic expressions here.

Given the marvelous potential of climate and terroir, it's no wonder that foreign investment and expertise have flooded Chile in recent decades, making it one of, if not the most, dynamic wine countries in the world today.
