Much like its neighbor, Chile, Argentina's wine industry is long-established, but fairly new to the world stage. Not until the 1990s did Argentina's wine producers seriously consider and enter the global market, preferring instead to grow and make vast quantities of mediocre to sub-par product, until a few enterprising visionaries realized its full potential. Today, it's the world's fifth largest wine producing nation, with enviable representation in export markets worldwide.

Whereas Chile owes its viticulture to its isolation, Argentina's is a result of altitude. Although there is a rich diversity of varietals here, the country's reputation rests predominantly on Malbec, In the world's highest red wine vineyards (some up to 4,600 ft.), bright, sunny days, and crisp, dry air produce Malbec wines of intense opulence, a style very much in fashion with today's consumer, and these climatic features go a long way for other varietals, as well. Mendoza is far and away the most important wine region here, centered around the city of the same name, and Argentina's best vineyards and most prominent producers are based in the Andean foothills southwest of the city. The sub-districts of Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo, and Las Compuertas produce arguably the country's finest wines. Further southwest, the Valle de Uco is home to a burgeoning array of fine sites, with the sub-zones of Gualtaray and Tupungato known for their excellent potential with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, respectively.

Venturing both north and south of Mendoza, one can find some of the most remote and rugged vineyards on Earth. The province of Salta near the Bolivian border is home to Argentina's most famous white grape, Torrontés. It reaches its aromatic apogee in these vine plots that touch the sky at nearly 9,000 feet in some places. At the southern tip of the habitable world, Patagonia is Argentina's untamed, viticultural frontier, where enterprising producers are taking advantage of Antarctic influence to sculpt structured, characterful red wines in Rio Negro and Neuquén.

As with Chile, Argentina has seen a flood of foreign investment and expertise in the past few decades, and it rivals its neighbor as one of the most dynamic and innovative wine producing nations in the world.
