Drouhin Musigny 2001  (#332600)

Pinot Noir from Chambolle-Musigny, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

[ 96 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): The 2001 vintage is a terrific year for this consistently excellent wine. The nose is deep and refined, offering up notes of red and black cherries, strawberries, a bit of quince, orange rind, mustard seed, iron-like soil tones, coffee, a bit of game, roses and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, elegant and deep at the core, with flawless focus and balance, ripe, well-integrated tannins, and good, sound acids on the long, intensely-flavored finish. This wine does not seem as buttoned up behind its acidity as is normally the case at this stage of its evolution, and is really quite lovely to drink today in a nascently complex sort of way. I would still bury it for a good, solid decade to ensure that it blossoms fully before having at it in earnest. Lovely juice. 2014-2050. Ponsot Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes 2001  (#106551)

Pinot Noir from Morey-St.-Denis, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

[ 94 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): A spicy, perfumed and fully mature nose offers up plenty of earth and exotic tea elements where the fruit runs much more toward the red side of the spectrum. The velvety and wonderfully refined medium weight flavors exude a lovely minerality on the pure and focused finish that possesses a dusty palate impression. I very much like the persistence as the finale seems to disappear only to return several times. For my taste this is drinking perfectly well now though it should hold effortlessly for at least another decade. In a word, terrific. Tasted several times with consistent notes. Drink: now+. Rousseau Chambertin 2001  (#320848)

Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

[ 20/20 points Clive Coates (The Wines of Burgundy): Fullish colour. Profound, backward, rich and concentrated on the nose. Even beter than his Clos de Bèze. Fullish body. Complete. Gently oaky. Ripe, rich and marvellously poised and balanced. About as good as you'll get in 2001. Drink: 2010 to 2030. (Jul 2005) 96 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): The 2001 Rousseau Chambertin is quite closed today, but with all of its regal potential fully evident even at such a young age. This wine evolved beautifully over the hour that we drank it, seemingly showing a different snapshot of its different elements every ten or fifteen minutes. The nose offers up a refined mélange of red cherries, strawberries, plums, coffee, grilled meats, cocoa powder, minerals, fresh thyme, violets and cedar. On the palate the wine is fullish and still quite tight, with outstanding acidity currently reigning in the depth of fruit that one can still sense in the mid-palate, and with a long, ripely tannic and soil-driven finish that blossoms beautifully in a peacock s tail. This is a great vintage of Rousseau Chambertin in the making, with striking transparency and intensity of flavor. All it needs is time in the cellar. Drink: 2015-2050. Bouchard La Romanee 2001  (#111227)

Pinot Noir from Vosne-Romanée, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

[ 96 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): The brilliantly perfumed and still very fresh, smoky and spicy red and dark berry fruit aromas are trimmed in subtle wood and menthol nuances. The vibrant and velvety broad-scaled flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the pure, balanced, focused and harmonious finish that delivers flat out stunning length. The depth here is nothing short of mind blowing and this is clearly a big step up from the 2000. Moreover this stunningly beautiful wine is still on the way up and should indisputably make for a great vintage of La Romanée in time. Drink: 2021+. Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze 2001  (#102652)

Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

[ 97 points Bettane & Desseauve's Guide to the Wines of France: A violet and licorice bouquet of rare class, remarkably balanced, peerless distinction of terroir. An accomplished and certainly underestimated vintage that will delight the true connoisseur! Drink: 2011 up to 2021. (2011) 96 points Fine Wine Review: The Chambertin-Closde-Bèze is a more opulent, richer, less mineral wine, especially when tasted on days subsequent to the opening of the bottle. The strawberries remain, but the red currant is replaced by darker, more animal aromas and flavors. This may be slightly below the very greatest Clos-de-Bèzes from Rousseau, but it will provide a great wine for those willing to cellar it sufficiently. 2014-2034.
