97 points and 'South African White Wine Discovery of the Year,' Tim Atkin, MW: "Every so often you come across a wine in its first vintage that’s simply, incontrovertibly world class. This is one of them. Made with Chenin from three blocks (7, 12 and 13) from Joshua Visser’s Oudam farm on the Skurfberg. Dense, rich and ferrous with salty freshness, coiled power and the sense that you are tasting a landscape, not just a wine. Incredibly long and satisfying. 2020-27."

95 points Neal Martin (Vinous): "The 2017 Hulkrains ('crying cliff') is named after a cliff close to the vineyard that is said to weep when it rains. Hitherto it was blended into the Cartology. The vines were planted on 1976 on red sand soils located at 450 meters above sea level. The wine has a wonderful, pure bouquet of dried honey, orange blossom, broom and just a hint of wild fennel, all detailed and expressive of their place of origin, as depicted on the label. The palate is very well balanced with touches of honeysuckle on the entry and a fine bead of acidity, and quite saline in the mouth, showing a touch of lemongrass toward the persistent finish. Outstanding. Drink: 2019-2029. (Aug 2018)"

95 points and 'Editors' Choice,' Wine Enthusiast: "[$100 list] A light, toasty accent wafts from the glass upon first sniff of this beautiful white, transitioning into aromas of grilled apple, dried apple slices, lemon wax, fresh beeswax, lemon basil and orange blossom. The palate is stunning, with a superb texture that wraps around the just-ripe citrus, orchard fruit and bitter melon flavors. It's superbly balanced, with notes of wood spice, field flowers, lemongrass and fynbos that dance throughout the evolving and lingering finish. While it's a stunner now, it should age gracefully through 2029. Alcohol 14%. (Jul 2019)"

93 points Wine Spectator: "[$100 list] Ripe and juicy, with a full-bodied feel to the mix of green fig, green almond, yellow apple and lemon curd flavors. The finish lets a lemon shortbread note curl through, adding length and panache. Chenin Blanc. Drink now through 2022. 156 cases made, 30 cases imported. (6/15/19)"
