4.5/5 points Difford's Guide: "A blend of column and pot still rums distilled from fermented molasses and aged in ex-bourbon barrels. Pusser's is blended according to original British Admiralty specifications using five rums from Guyana and Trinidad. Appearance: Clear, dark coppery amber with burnished copper highlights. Aroma: Pungent molasses, treacle, toffee, honey and vanilla with oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and blackened ginger cake. Taste: Full-bodied, and despite its strength with a mellow medley of flavours: molasses, treacle, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, toffee and espresso. Alcohol peppery spice and oak balances slight sweetness and adds structure. Aftertaste: Long finish with burnt caramel, spice, cold tea and prunes. Overall: An authentically styled British navy rum in both alcohol strength and character with flavours of molasses, treacle, toffee, vanilla, oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and blackened ginger cake. ABV 54.5%. (4/18/18)"
Distiller notes: "Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the Royal Navy ship’s 'Pusser' shutdown claims of watering down sailors’ daily tots by dousing a bit of gunpowder in the rum and attempting to light. If the mixture ignited, the rum was 'at proof.' If it didn’t, the Pusser might find himself tossed to sea. ABV 54.5%."
