91 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(100% tempranillo, from vines planted in 1957 at 660 meters altitude; aged in French oak, half of it new, for 17 months and bottled without filtration): Glass-staining ruby. Explosive, seductively perfumed aromas of candied red and dark berries, incense, rose pastille and Asian spices. Sappy, penetrating black raspberry and blueberry flavors show excellent depth and clarity, with smoky mineral and star anise nuances gaining strength with air. Closes sweet and very long, with lingering spiciness and gentle tannins. Importer Jorge Ordonez told me that lots of high-end oak is used here, from the likes of Taransaud, Darnajou and Dominique Laurent, for example. (Sep 2012)"
90 points Peñín Guide: "(100% tempranillo). Colour: bright cherry. Nose: ripe fruit, sweet spices, creamy oak, varietal, characterful, earthy notes. Palate: flavourful, fruity, toasty, round tannins. (2013)"
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Hatched from the modern model, this dark, oaky Tempranillo is saturated in color, with flush, potent aromas of boysenberry, wood spice and lead pencil. It’s lively and bringing the volume, while flavors of charred, savory blackberry and barbecue end in a crusty tasting finish with some heat. Drink now through 2018. 2,000 cases produced. Alcohol 15%. (May 2013)"
This single vineyard-designated wine has plenty of red cherries, blueberries, mulberries and red raisins, depicting grapes pushed to full ripeness without going beyond the boundary into excessive overripeness. The oak character is relatively elegant with toasty, coffee hints only, and the balanced wine shows some lingering length as well. Drink now or in the next five or so years. Bodegas Volver is a project developed and co-owned by Jorge Ordoñez and Rafael Cañizares. This winery is located in the best terroir of La Mancha found in the eastern region of the DO. The soil is the reason the winery committed to purchasing 247 acres of vineyards with deep sandy soils, iron-rich clay, and a thick layer of chalk that are located at an altitude of 1,980 feet.
