Barbera

While Barbera is known for being inherently front-loaded with lush, opulent fruit, its most salient characteristic is its relative lack of tannin coupled with vibrant acidity. Barbera d'Alba will almost always be a bit denser and darker than a Barbera d'Asti. Because the grape itself is low in tannin, it can sometimes benefit (unlike Nebbiolo) from a sojourn in new French oak, where the wine will pick up some tannin from the wood.
