101 Wine Co. (Jonata) Red California The Paring 2007
(311565)
750ml
$24.95
United States - Cabernet & Blends - California
Out Of Stock
The owners of Napa's legendary Screaming Eagle vineyard recently launched 101 Wine Company (dba Jonata), a new winery in the Santa Ynez Valley. The Paring wines are made from the younger vines that aren't quite ready for the Jonata label. This 2007 red exhibits a perfume of blackberry, ripe plums, blueberry and vanilla. Dark black fruit in the palate, complex, rich and well balanced.
Robert Parker on Jonata: "This remarkable Santa Ynez estate is under the same ownership as Napa Valley’s Screaming Eagle winery. While well-known Bordeaux consultant, Michel Rolland, and Screaming Eagle’s winemaker, Andy Erickson, play important roles at Jonata, the people most responsible for the quality of the wines are owners Charles Banks, Stan Kroenke, and winemaker Matt Dees. Jonata’s debut vintage, the 2004s, were somewhat of a work in progress, but the 2005s convincingly established what compelling wines were about to emerge... this is one of California’s most exciting new wineries. What they are accomplishing with Bordeaux varietals is mind-boggling."

$22.00
Producer notes: "The inaugural vintage of The Sum is a Cabernet-based blended red wine created by Tuck Beckstoffer, whose family is widely considered to be the most famous grape growing family in the Napa Valley. This amazingly well-endowed, profoundly rich red wine must be smelled and tasted to be believed. The color is a rich, deep purple garnet and gives but a small hint as to what’s inside. The nose gives off soaring and wonderfully focused aromas of ripe stone fruit, vanilla, cherries, cedar cigar box, blackberries and cinnamon. In the mouth, there are layers upon layers of broad, sweet opulent fruit balanced by firm tannins, great acidity and oak."

: "Ripe, rich and concentrated, with plenty of flavor. The currant, plum, anise and oak notes are deep and integrated, but also supported by firm, intense tannins. Has a sense of polish and finesse. 400 cases made. (7/31/91)"
Abreu Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena Thorevilos Vineyard 2003
(302127)
750ml
$399.95
United States - Cabernet & Blends - California
In stock, 3 available
Producer notes: "Abreu Thorevilos is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Planted in 1990, Thorevilos is located in the eastern hills of Saint Helena just below Howell Mountain. The Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot are at the base of the vineyard while the Cabernet Sauvignon stretches up the steep western facing slopes of the vineyard. The uniqueness of this site is the white tufa rock soils which are very well-drained and mineral rich. Coupled with the microclimate, the very unique character of the wine can only be described as Thorevilos. The wine is aged for two years in 100% new French oak. Thorevilos receives an additional two and a half years of bottle age prior to release."

Wine Spectator
: "Supple, fleshy, elegant and stylish, showing a layered mix of plum, black cherry and cranberry, with touches of spice and tobacco. Full-bodied and complex, gaining body and depth on the finish, where the flavors unfold to reveal touches of herb and mineral. Drink now through 2017. 75 cases made. (11/15/10)"
Producer notes: "Sleeping Lady Vineyard, which sits just south of Dominus in Yountville, rivals the best vineyard ground that exists in Napa Valley, and it consistently produces grapes with a unique purity and intensity of aroma, as well as a beautifully distinctive flavor. The wine exhibits an aromatic and flavor profile of crème de cassis, ultra-dark black cherry, and raspberry, and fine-grained tannins."

: "[$20 list] A little brusque in texture, with some tartness, but there’s a lot of richness. Shows complex flavors of blackberries, cherries, black currants, cola, dark bitter chocolate, cedar and spices, with a pleasant minerality, and the finish is bone dry. Brisk tannins make it an ideal companion to roasted meats and hard cheeses. (12/31/10)"
Producer notes: "The 2008 shows an enticing nose of black cherry and cassis and hints of eucalpytus and cocoa. In the glass, this wine delivers much more than what one might expect for a Cab so modestly priced, revealing rich flavors of cherry, chocolate and plum enveloped by soft tannins."

: "Combines very ripe, spicy dark berry fruit that's even a touch racy, with a firm backbone and a well-structured mix of acidity and tannins. The fruit is potent and concentrated, yet also shows a suppleness and measure of grace. Should only get better. Drink now through 2024. (2011)"

: "A stylish wine that's well-structured and concentrated, slow to unveil its mix of dried currant, blackberry and black licorice, gaining depth and complexity. Yet for all its glimpses of depth and nuance, this needs time. Best from 2012 through 2021. 973 cases made. (12/31/10)"

: "Made in the modern cult style, this soft, ripely lush Cabernet is immediately likeable for its blackberry-pie filling, black currant liqueur, chocolate, licorice and smoky sweet oak flavors. It’s California Cabernet at its heady, opulent best. Drink now. (12/31/10)"

: "(includes 12% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 4% malbec; made at Merus): Inky ruby. Powerful aromas of dark berry compote, cherry-cola, smoky herbs and licorice, with slow-building notes of mocha and vanilla. Lush and creamy on entry, then firmer in the middle, offering chewy blackberry and cassis flavors and a touch of bitter cherry. The vanilla note comes back on the long, sweet, penetrating finish. This benefits a lot from air. (May/Jun 2011)"

Wine & Spirits
: "Blended from 30 vineyard blocks throughout Napa Valley, this wine's bold black currant flavors edge toward prunes, while the fruit remains firm and juicy. Mineral tannins add to the smoky blackness. Decant it for seared sirloin. (Feb 2011)"

California Grapevine
: "Medium-dark purplish ruby; attractive, jammy, spicy, cassis and dark berry fruit aroma with notes of dark chocolate and tobacco; full body; forward, rich, plush, cedary, highly extracted, ripe dark cherry and blackberry fruit flavors with notes of vanilla, green olive, and graphite; full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Very highly recommended. 14.8% alcohol; 973 cases; blended with 12% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 4% Malbec; released October 2010. (Feb/Mar 2011)"
Altvs is a project begun with the 2005 vintage at Merus winery in the Napa Valley. The idea: to produce hand crafted, small lot Cabernet Sauvignon based wines that celebrate the hedonistic qualities of lushness, density and ripeness while remaining true to the intensity and power of modern day Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. In a very short time since its initial release, Altvs has captured the imagination of an international audience, garnering critical acclaim through the world of fine wine. Tasting notes: 2007 marks our second vintage of Altvs, a handcrafted, small-production, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This elegant wine features fruit from a handful of selected rows within our favorite vineyards located from Coombsville to St. Helena. Small portions of Merlot (12%), Petit Verdot (5%), and Malbec (4%) were incorporated for added color, texture, aromatics and complexity. The 2007 Altvs Cabernet delivers balance, finesse and intense fruit concentration. The nose is lush and generous with huckleberry, blueberry, crème de cassis, crushed rocks, and cinnamon. The palate is a seamless fabric of acidity, wood, tannin, and alcohol. The finish is full, long, velvety and elegant. While the unusual opulence and structure of this wine allow it to be consumed in its youth, it will continue to evolve and improve over the next decade. 973 cases produced.

: "The 2008 Right Bank (55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc) is slightly shorter and not as concentrated as the 2007. The lightest of the three vintages, the 2008 is a full-bodied effort displaying lots of cassis, bay leaf, charcoal, and subtle smoke. Expect it to drink well for 15 or so years. (Dec 2010)"
