The bouquet is very, very floral and compelling, as it jumps from the glass in a blend of violets, black cherries, plums, dark chocolate, very gentle black pepper notes and a nice base of soil. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and very suave, with an early silkiness that is very appealing, coupled to ripe, fine-grained tannins and superb length and grip on the complex finish. A very compelling and utterly complete vintage of Smith-Woodhouse, this is clearly the sleeper Port of the vintage of the examples that I have tasted. It should offer remarkable value. 2025-2100. There's a dark berry thrust, parried by alcohol and black tannin, the fruit winning out in the end. It's juicy, with an ethereal balance and a hint of volatility that seems to add to the wine's energy. Smith usually drinks well 15 to 20 years from the vintage; this one may benefit from more time.
