The Barbaresco DOC lies on the other side of Alba from Barolo (i.e., to the east). More than half of the total acreage of the zone is situated in and around the towns of Neive and Treiso. The similarities between Barbaresco and Barolo overwhelm their differences (i.e., same Nebbiolo grape, same vinification, etc.), to the extent that some producers make both. That said, all things being equal, a Barbaresco will always be slightly scaled-down, perhaps a bit less elegant, compared to a Barolo of the same or similar pedigree. Barbaresco, too, is released in both normale and riserva versions.

For reasons too complex to go into here, and we're speaking very generally, there seems at this time to be less excitement, less commitment to really push for the maximum in artistic expression, in the Barbaresco zone than in Barolo.
