90 points and 'Year's Best Zinfandel,' Wine & Spirits: "[$22 list] A blend of small-berried fruit from a hillside vineyard with grapes from the valley floor, this is floral, intensely earthy and powerfully constricted. The blend creates full-bodied richness, bringing in some raisined character that adds complexity to the tighter fruit. A black wine with bountiful tannins to carry it in the cellar. (Feb 2013)"
Producer notes: " We harvested from two individual vineyards on the eastern side of the Dry Creek Valley from early September to early October. One vineyard is hillside with red rocky soil producing smaller berries with flavors of blackberry and blueberry. While the 2nd vineyard has gravelly loam soil located on the valley floor and produces fruit with pronounced flavors of cherry, plum and black pepper. Overall 2009 was a cooler vintage with fewer heat spikes than in past years, so the acidity of this vintage is slightly higher than prior releases. The growing season allowed for uniform ripening in the which led to wines with good structure, balance and complexity. In the glass there are aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, black pepper and vanilla. There is mouth filling texture with spicy flavors of blueberry, black pepper, dark fruits and a long finish. Winemaker Kevin Hall notes that 'this is a big wine'."

88 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "[$20 list] The 2010 Sin Zin is about as good a bottle of California wine as readers will find for the money. Juicy, rich and varietally expressive, the 2010 impresses for its balance, especially at this price point. Juicy red cherries, tobacco, flowers and mint linger on the expressive, layered finish. This is a terrific effort for a vintage that was very, very hard for Zinfandel. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2015. (Apr 2013)"
Producer notes: "The 2010 includes a small amount of Petite Sirah to broaden the mouthfeel on the wine and add a little more dark fruit to the palate. There are aromas of raspberry, plum, black cherry, and citrus. In the glass there are flavors of plum, cranberry, black cherry, and classic spicy black pepper. The 2010 is a restrained vintage and will reward those with the patience to cellar a few bottles. 98.5% Zinfandel, 1.5% Petite Sirah. Alcohol 14.7%."

Producer notes: "From one of Sonoma Valley's oldest and most prestigious Zinfandel vineyards, Old Hill Ranch, established in 1885. The grapes for 'Bambino' are from a 10-acre block we planted on Old Hill in 1998. This young vine field-blend is patterned after the ancient vine field-blend for which Old Hill is known. The wine is a blend of at least a dozen grape varieties -- principally Zinfandel, but also Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouchet and Grenache to name a few -- all fermented together to create this Zinfandel blend. Our Bambino is deep purple in color with intense blackberry aromas and lots of 'Old Hill' spice, including nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. The flavors are intense too, with blackberries, cherries, and vanilla spice. The tannins are big but ripe and mouth watering on the finish."

Producer notes: "We’ve been producing a White Zinfandel at Buehler since 1983. Our means of bringing you consistently delicious wines remains unchanged since 1983: we hand-pick our 100% zinfandel fruit riper than most producers and leave less residual sugar. Riper fruit translates to flavors like wild berries and strawberries; yes, real red zinfandel fruit flavors! The end result is a wine with more red zinfandel berry character and a less sweet, more refreshing taste. Alcohol 12.5%. Residual sugar 1.5%."

89-91 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2011 Zinfandel is a screaming value. Sweet, layered and impeccably balanced, the 2011 is gorgeous from the very first taste. Hints of sweet tobacco, cedar, licorice and dark red cherries all take shape in the glass. This mid-weight, gracious Zinfandel is impeccable. Even better, it is a steal. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. (Apr 2013)"
Producer notes: "What makes this particular vintage so good? Consider the vineyards that compose over 90% of this wine -- Fanucchi (planted in 1906), Carlisle (planted in 1927), Rowe (planted in 1906), Rossi (planted in 1910), and Bedrock (planted in 1888). All of these vineyards are designates in their own right. With the exception of Rossi, all contain significant mixed blacks. If you’re a fan of high quality, old-vine Zinfandel at a bargain price, back the truck up. Serious folks, take advantage of my lack of sanity. No one should be selling a wine this good for so little. 677 cases produced. Tasting Note: Medium-dark ruby-garnet. A classic 'zin-berry' (raspberry, cherry) aroma is highlighted by notes of briary spice and black pepper. Smooth and full-bodied on entry, a wave of red fruits envelops the palate while refined tannins build through the finish. The texture and precision of this wine is simply amazing! Drink now. Drink next year. Drink all the way until 2018! No matter what you do, you can’t go wrong!"

Producer notes: "Eberle 2009 Zinfandel showcases two of Paso Robles finest Zinfandel vineyards, the reputable Steinbeck Vineyard and the Wine-Bush Vineyard. When you put these two vineyards together the result is a Zinfandel that has a bounty of fruit with balanced tannins and acid. The wine has aromas of raspberry and blackberry with a hint of smoke, while the palate is coated with rich dark bramble berry flavors, cedar and spiciness. In the mouth you will find the same characteristic dustiness from the red volcanic soils as in previous vintages, and the body is rounder with subtle mouth coating tannins. Producer notes: "Elevated aromas of baked berry pie, licorice and pepper intermingle with oak notes of vanilla and mesquite. The Jam Bomb delivers again with a brambly blueberry middle surrounded by ripe flavors of boysenberry and blackberry. A big splash of Barbera, together with a little Petite Sirah and Mourvedre keep this wine rocking your palate from its jammy start to its velvety berry/cinnamon finish.
This Zinfandel lives on the edge of conventionality and crazy: Part tarry molasses. Part brambly berry. All in Maverick’s one-of-a-kind balanced and weighty style. Think big flavors or rich meats when pairing this wine. Go for a cioppino, grilled steak, Beef Wellington, rack or leg of lamb, spare ribs or pork chops."

Producer notes: "This is our third vintage of Cinema, and probably the most intensely concentrated of the vintages. The 2008 Cinema has tremendous richness as a result of the fruit’s ripeness, and a solid tannin structure that will allow it to mature nicely over time. Those who are fans of Super Tuscans will enjoy the spicy, full-bodied nature of this wine as well as the juicy fruit impressions of blackberries, cherries, currants, anise and cigar box. Dark and decadent, but with a good showing of balance and complexity. Barrel aged 18 months in 50% new French oak and 50% 1-2 year old French oak. 47% Zinfandel, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petite Sirah. Alcohol 14.5%.

Not yet reviewed; 2009 vintage rated 92 points and 'Editors' Choice' by Wine Enthusiast: "Just one word for this Zin: delicious. It’s really classic Dry Creek, maybe a little softer than many, but profoundly ripe in wild berry, cherry, cola, licorice, black pepper and sandalwood flavors that finish long and deep. Great price for a Zinfandel this good."

Very appealing to taste now with its forward, rich fruit. Very highly recommended. 15% alcohol; blended with 15% Petite Sirah; to be released January 2013. (Dec 2012)"
90 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "[$38 list] Ripe but not too ripe; deep but not over the top; high in oak but not ruled by the wood. Add nicely focused blackberries with a hint of dried raspberry for good measure and wrap it all up in a supple-textured, moderately tannic, well-balanced coverlet and, voila, you have the recipe for success. And while it is very ageworthy, it is also quite inviting here and now. (Jan 2013)"

Producer notes: "77% Zinfandel, 22% Petite Sirah, 1% Carignan. A second straight year of lower than average yields has provided for a wonderfully nuanced, deeply fragrant Zinfandel. A wine that expresses its intensity through complex layers instead of simple, brute power. It is almost impossible to describe the zesty 'fruit bowl' of aromatics: Raspberry? Blackberry? Mulberry? Perhaps razzmatazz berry describes it best. The addition of Petite sirah underscores the ripe fruit flavors and adds a spicy touch of cardamom and cinnamon. Plush without ever being heavy or harsh, the 2009 Zinfandel is a delicious wine that sets the mind thinking of a myriad of potential food pairings."

92 points and 'Year's Best Zinfandel,' Wine & Spirits: "From Grgich Hills’ vineyard in Calistoga, a northeast-facing hillside near Petrified Forest Road. This has zin’s sour plum scent along with tannins that feel polished, supple, sophisticated and cool. They build richness rather than fullness into the wine, their depths sparkling with mineral glints of light. This is a classical Napa Valley zin to pour with most anything meaty off the grill. (Feb 2013)"
90 point California Grapevine: "[$42 list] Medium ruby; attractive, rich, spicy, briary, toasty, dark berry fruit aroma with notes of black pepper and smoked meat; medium-full to full body; forward, rich, plummy, briary, blackberry fruit flavors with peppery notes and a hint of anise; medium-full tannin; a bit rough on the finish; lingering aftertaste. Very highly recommended. 15.3% alcohol; blended with 2% Petite Sirah; released Winter 2012. (Dec 2011/Jan 2012)"
Producer notes: "We grow our Zinfandel naturally, without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, at our estate vineyard in Calistoga, nestled in the northern tip of Napa Valley. This food-friendly Zinfandel’s flavors of strawberries, licorice and a hint of white pepper make it the perfect match for grilled meats, Lasagna, pizza topped with tomato sauce and beef stews."

Reticent and intensely saline, the 2011 is intriguing, but also quite shut down today. Exotic citrus peel and floral notes emerge over time, but readers will have to be patient. Today, the Fannucchi-Wood Road is very much closed in on itself. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. (Apr 2013)"
91 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "(again, from a site that was reportedly planted over a century ago): Glass-staining purple. Pungent red berry preserve and bitter cherry aromas show excellent clarity. Rich and surprisingly lively, offering broad black and blue fruit flavors and a jolt of peppery spices. Closes on a sweet floral pastille note, with subtle tannins providing grip. Hartford told me that there's a little bit of petite sirah in here. (May/Jun 2013)"

93 points Robert Parker: "The 2009 Zinfandel Old Vine walks a hypothetical path between the complexity, foresty, spicy notes of Pinot Noir and the exuberant, ripe, rich blue and black fruits of Zinfandel. Blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, pepper, spice and forest floor characteristics result in a complex, medium to full-bodied, supple-textured Zinfandel. This gorgeous Zin is already irresistible and should drink nicely for 4-5 years. (Feb 2011)"
92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Glass-staining ruby. Cool, complex aromas of blueberry, mulberry and dried flowers, complemented by a hint of minerality. Creamy and sweet, but with firm acidity leavening the wine's dark fruit preserve-like flavors. Wonderfully sappy and expansive zin, finishing with smooth tannins and excellent length. These vines are 93 years old, according to Don Hartford, and the wine was raised in two-thirds new oak. (May/Jun 2011)"
92 points Wine Spectator: "This shows a distinctive sense of place, featuring aromas of huckleberry and fresh underbrush, as well as complex, potent flavors of berry cobbler, minerals and roasted sage. Needs time. Best from 2013 through 2017. 1,000 cases made. (6/30/11)"
17.5/20 points Alex Hunt (The World of Fine Wine): "(16.1%) Aromatically, this shows a gorgeous depth of sleek blueberry fruit, with some herbal brightness to balance. The palate possesses classic Zin juiciness but brings more purity and finesse to the party than the majority. It is long and even in the mouth, with alcohol well in check and nicely judged acidity, too. (Issue 34; 2011)"

92 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "A wine of considerable muscle and depth, the 2011 Zinfandel Highwire Vineyard stands apart for its plushness and richness. Layers of dark, floral-infused red/black hued fruit saturate the palate. The 2011 is gorgeous today, but it should also age nicely for at least a handful of years. The Highwire is one of the more overtly fruit-driven Zinfandels in this range. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. (Apr 2013)"
91 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Dark purple. Sappy, liqueur-like aromas of fresh cherry and raspberry. Intense and concentrated but lively, with appealing sweetness to its sappy red fruit flavors. The raspberry notes lingers with excellent tenacity on the finish, which is lifted by zesty acidity and shows a touch of youthfully bitter tannins. Producer notes: "Our Ink Grade Vineyard is perfectly suited to growing Zinfandel. On a rocky shale ridge, we designed terraced blocks which provide maximum sun exposure to nurture the fruit to full maturity. Flavors of strawberry and raspberry jam are spiced up by hints of black pepper and anise -- classic characteristics of the varietal. Medium in body, this is a balanced wine that finishes with well-integrated oak -- adding just a dash of vanilla flavor."
