Unique blend of 9 different varietals. Loaded with handsome fruit and delivers big-time flavor. 26% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Mourvedre, 9% Grenache, 7% Zinfandel, 5% Touriga Nacional, 5% Pinot Noir, 5% Cinsault, and 4% Roussanne.
WHWC Staff Notes: "This is a favorite winery I have been following for the past 13 years. Located in the far west side of Paso Robles, I first became aware of Adelaida when the winemaker at Justin tipped me off to them. That was just prior to him making the famed Justin Isosceles that was ranked as Wine Spectator's #5 wine of the year. As fate would have it, he left Justin that year to take over winemaking at Adelaida. The School House brand is Adelaida's second label. This is a perfect example of what a multi-varietal blend with some bottle age should taste like. It consists of Syrah 26%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Mourvedre 19%, Grenache 9%, Zinfandel 7%, and equal parts Touriga Nacional, Pinot Noir, Cinsault, and Roussanne. It's just the right amount of jamminess with the alcohol checking in at 14.9%. The wine is full-bodied and all of the nine varietals mesh well together. This bottle would go well with pizza, pasta with a red meat sauce or even a burger. It's drinking really well right now and is in a style that well represents the west side of Paso Robles." - Mark Menchyk

91 points Wine Spectator: "[$25 list] Elegant and graceful, this highlights its ripe, supple core of plum and black cherry flavors, ending with a peppery edge and fine length. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2021. 450 cases made. (12/15/12)"
90 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "[$25 list] The 2010 Esperance is gorgeous. It boasts dimensions of juiciness and depth that are missing from some of the other 2010s. Dark plums, cherries, licorice and oak meld together beautifully in this juicy, exuberant Rhone blend. In 2010, Esperance is 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre. It is without question one of the finest Rhone-blends produced in California in its price range. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. (Aug 2012)"
90 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(60% grenache, 25% syrah and 15% mourvedre): Dark ruby. Intensely perfumed scents of black raspberry, boysenberry, sassafras and candied flowers. Juicy and precise in the mouth, offering energetic cherry and dark berry flavors with a touch of bitter chocolate. The floral note comes back on the very long, smoky finish, which features a suave floral quality and fine-grained tannins. (Nov/Dec 2012)"
90 points Rhone Report: "[$25 list] A touch more meaty and spicy, the 2010 Andrew Murray Espérance is a blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre that saw 20% new French oak. It offers up a complex bouquet of both red and black fruits, earth, pepper, licorice, and tar to go with a medium to full-bodied, textured, and beautifully fresh palate. The acidity is noticeable here, yet it is integrated into the wine and keeps everything fresh and lively. Enjoy this solid value over the coming 4-6 years. (Dec 2012)"

Wine Enthusiast: "[$25 list] A soft, easy wine for drinking now. Based on Grenache, it has cherry pie, mocha, red currant and baking spice flavors. Versatile for pairing with a wide range of foods that call for a medium-bodied red. Alcohol 15%. 600 cases produced. (May 2013)"
Producer notes: "We named this wine in homage of a wonderful restaurant and inn in Vezelay, named L'Espérance. We used the inn as a home-base for much of our early explorations into the Rhône Valley and fell in love with the wines of the southern Rhône region. 'Espérance' translates into 'Hope' from French to English. With this wine, we hope to not only recreate the great red wines of southern France, but we further hope to craft a wine that will inspire your senses the way we were inspired over a decade ago. The 2011 Esperance is the fulfillment of a dream to produce a rich, red wine blend that rivals the famed wines of Gigondas, in the southern Rhône Valley, while retaining an Andrew Murray Vineyards 'house style'. This vintage was given a more serious winemaking regimen with more new oak. I also chose a bigger Syrah to blend in with the Grenache and Mourvedre, so the resulting wine is a bit more profound. I believe this is perhaps the best Espérance that we have ever released. All of the extra effort has yielded a rich, concentrated wine with aromas and flavors of ultra-ripe strawberries, black cherries, and blueberries, mixed in with the spiciness of cinnamon and vanilla from the toasty new French oak. We chose to close the bottle with the Stelvin ScrewCap to preserve the freshness and avoid 'off' flavors. It is a blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre that is 100% delicious."

92 points Rhone Report: "[$25 list] Zingy and lively, the 2011 Andrew Murray RGB Camp 4 Vineyard is a blend of equal parts Roussanne and Grenache Blanc that was aged both in stainless steel and neutral oak. Showing classic aromas of juiced pear, citrus rind, buttered almond, mineral, and a subtle hint of honey, it is decidedly fresh and pure on the palate, with a medium-bodied, detailed, and weightless texture, integrated acidity, and a dry, clean finish. All around beautiful stuff, it can easily stand on its own, or would also be the perfect starter to a meal. Give bottles a quick decant, and drink them over the coming year or two. (Dec 2012)"
90 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(a 50/50 blend of roussanne and grenache blanc): Light yellow. A highly aromatic bouquet evokes orange zest, ginger and honeysuckle, along with a dusty mineral overtone. Vibrant nectarine and citrus flavors show very good focus and energy, picking up spiciness with air. Finishes dry and refreshingly bitter, with excellent intensity, focus and length. Very grown-up in style, with no excess fat. (Nov/Dec 2012)"
Producer notes: "The RGB is named for the blend of Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, which is a typical white wine blend found in and around the small villages in the south of France. Typically Roussanne, which is more difficult to ripen and thus more rare, takes a backseat to the Grenache Blanc, which is a more neutral tasting grape. We like to richen up this blend a bit and include more of the robust Roussanne. The resulting blend is nearly a 50-50 balance between the two varieties. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and then fermented and aged together in a small, temperature controlled stainless tank. This early blending allowed the flavors to come together more completely. After fermentation, the wine was transferred to neutral French Burgundy barrels to allow a bit more oxygen into the wine, which acted to soften and round out the final wine. The aroma of this wine explodes with white flowers, green apple, a tropical/banana note, and a flinty/minerally note. The aromas find their way onto the palate where you will sense a long, round, viscous mouthfeel made complex with a racy acidity. The RGB is clean, fresh, and ready to drink. It should, however, improve over the next couple of years. 300 cases produced."

93 points Rhone Report: "Coming from the cool climate Watch Hill Vineyard located in the Los Alamos Valley, the 2010 Andrew Murray Syrah Watch Hill Vineyard is a blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier. Aged for 18 months in 33% new French oak, it is complex and perfumed on the nose, with copious raspberry, sappy underbrush, peppercorn, leather, and earth. This leads into a medium-bodied, elegant, and stylish Syrah that builds in stature with air, showing a pure, focused texture, integrated acidity, and a clean, lengthy finish. Taking the better part of the evening to open up, it should be given another year or two in bottle, and consumed over the following 5-8 years. (Dec 2012)"
90 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "[$30 list] Glass-staining ruby. Intense aromas of cassis, blueberry, olive and violet pastille: is this syrah or what? Full and broad on the palate, offering dark berry liqueur flavors framed by dusty tannins that build with aeration. This solid, dense wine finishes with very good power and smoky persistence. I suspect that it will be even better with a bit more bottle age. (Nov/Dec 2012)"
Producer notes: "[$30 list] The Watch Hill Vineyard lies in the cool reaches of the Los Alamos Valley. The grapes are allowed to reach very high maturity levels, while retaining a stunning natural acidity due to warm, sunny days and cool nights, and soils rich in sand and calcareous material. This results in a classic, cool-climate Syrah that is refreshing, rather than heavy or cloying. We added 3% Viognier to this vintage in hommage of our old Roasted Slope Syrah. The 2010 (like the 2009 before) just begged for a little something extra, and the Viognier delivered by lifting the nose and by helping to keep this Syrah remain yummy and dinstinctive. The aromas and flavors lean toward bright red fruits...cherries, raspberries, currants, and cranberries, with just a touch of a floral/violet note (from the Viognier) with a spicy note dominated by fresh black pepper and a dose of sweet French oak. This wine is quite quaffable now, but you will be rewarded if you wait 2-7 years to drink this one. 350 cases produced."

'Good Value' and 87 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "[$16 list] Appropriately labeled as one for everyday drinking and more concerned with accessible, lightly peppery Syrah fruit than with swagger and strength, Murray's Tous les Jours is frontal, slightly juicy, pleasantly rounded working whose mannerly tannins provide a nice bit of structural grip without mandating a lengthy stay in the cellar. (Mar 2013)"
Producer notes: "The 2011 vintage is remarkably dark and full-bodied, and yet it has such gentle tannins. It is truly a pleasure to drink, especially at the price. Lots of fruit and spices here...no need to wax poetic about this one as it tastes just plain yummy."

Layers of dark fruit flow from the glass as this plump, juicy Syrah shows off its overt, flashy personality. Hints of mocha and espresso linger on the finish. This dark, inviting and totally decadent wine is impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2013. (Aug 2011)"
88 points Wine Spectator: "Firm, dense and chewy, yet with lively, earthy blackberry and wild berry fruit that's intense, focused and persistent, ending with chewy tannins. Drink now through 2018. 2,000 cases made. (3/31/12)"
Producer notes: "Our mainstay is back; with a powerful nose of black berry and black currant fruits framed in herbal garrigue scents, with a citrus edge followed by Almond wood smoke, sweet black pepper and nori essences. On the palate, raspberry crème and black berry preserve flavors are surrounded by elements of forest floor and fresh green herbs notes that carry into the long, pure finish. Firm and developed tannins are carried with balanced acidity."

This juicy, value-priced red impresses for its overall balance and sheer deliciousness. Once again, it’s hard not to like the Eruption. Readers in search of by-the-case wine should give the 2011 a good look. This is a fabulous wine for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2015. (Apr 2013)"
A prorietary blend of Syrah, Tempranillo, Malbec, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Brassfield Eruption is a rich and intense wine with aromas of dark berry, sandalwood and cocoa giving way to jammy, ripe and expressive flavors. Layering the palate with supple tannins, it is elegant and well balanced; a true reflection of renowned winemaker, David Ramey.

90 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(a blend of carignane, petit sirah, grenache and mourvedre) Bright red. Flamboyant aromas of raspberry, cherry preserves and incense. Lively but supple red berry flavors are given depth by anise and cherry pit qualities. Reminds me of an open-knit 2007 southern Rhone wine, with excellent finishing clarity and persistent sweetness. This is much sexier than the 2006 version. (May/Jun 2009)"
Decanter: "Mostly Carignan from the Tollini vineayrd in Mendocino, plus Mourvedre and Grenache. Carignan tannins have mellowed to underscore a dry-herbal edge to robust berry fruit. A frequent sight on San Francisco wine lists, the name honours Mendocino's other, more illicit, cash crop. Drink: 2009-2013. Alc: 14.2%. (Jun 2011)"
Producer notes: "A blend of old-vine Carignan (87%) and Petite Sirah (13%). The wine was inspired by the egalitarian 'everyday wines' of rural Europe--especially those found along the Mediterranean coastal regions of Spain and France. We love those medium weight, fruit-driven reds that make just about any plate of food taste better. Indica is just this type of wine. Some of california’s oldest vines are planted in Mendocino County--in some cases more than a century ago. These immigrant farmers planted the hearty vines that thrived in low country Europe--things like Mourvedre, Alicante Bouchet, and Carignan. Modern tastes and the almost non-existent market for these varieties spelled eventual demise for these old vines. But in Alvin Tollini’s vineyard, Carignan vines remain. This vineyard, planted in 1965 by Alvin’s grandfather Ray, will likely evade the plow indefinitely. Story goes--when Ray’s health was faltering, he called Alvin to his side. He told Alvin that after his passing, the vineyard would be left to him under one condition: that the Carignan, which Ray himself had planted, would never be ripped out. Alvin consented, Ray later passed on, and the vines endure!"

Semi-opaque in color, with a drop dead gorgeous array of kirsch, white pepper, small flowers, and edgy minerality, this medium to full-bodied Syrah has an elegant profile, with no hard edges, great acidity, building richness, and a seamless finish. Those looking for big, chewy Syrahs should look elsewhere as this excels for its purity and finesse more so than for power or heft. 92 points Rhone Report: "An exotic, fruit-driven, and perfumed Viognier, the 2010 Melville Viognier Estate Verna's, from sandy soils and fermented in both neutral barrel and stainless steel, exhibits loads of passion and tropical fruits, honeysuckle, and assort floral nuances the blend seamlessly to a medium-bodied, juicy, and fresh palate. There's solid richness here, yet the overall impressive is one of vibrant, fresh fruit, and clean acidity. Enjoy bottles over the coming 1-2 years. (Jun 2012)"
Producer notes: "Named in honor of Ron Melville’s mother, Verna’s vineyard in Los Alamos is planted to seven acres of viognier on very sandy and nutrient deficient soils and is a combination of Alban selection and clone 1. Slightly more extreme in both temperature and wind then our Sta. Rita Hills property, Verna’s vineyard has proven well-suited for growing this aromatic and exotic varietal. Tasting Notes: Exotic aromas of grilled pineapple, macadamia, honeycomb and prickly pear mix with intriguing notes of ginger, sage, tuberose and yellow blossom. The rich mouthfeel expands on these components while maintaining a crisp and energizing finish."
