There is an exotic quality to the spice, orange peel and tobacco notes that is deeply intriguing, but in the end the fruit is more of a soloist than an orchestra. None of the Calera wines can be called straightforward, but the Reed is one of the most simple. Still, within the broader context of California Pinot Noir, it is fabulous -- just not as fabulous as its stable mates! Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. (Aug 2012)"

Sappy, seamless and gently sweet, offering powerful black raspberry and cherry flavors that become spicier with air. Closes smooth and very long, with resonating anise and raspberry compote flavors and gentle tannins. I found this bottling to be the most approachable of Calera's single-vineyard releases this year. 92 points and ' Year's Best Pinot Noir,' Wine & Spirits: "Reed’s north-facing slope gives wines that tend to be more linear than Calera’s other bottlings. In 2009, Reed leads with the green scents of whole cluster fermentation -- rhubarb and wintergreen -- and isn’t as filled-out as the Jensen (above). With air the fruit sweetens, knitting together those spicy aromas and the pronounced cranberry-like acidity. It’s reticent right now, needing some time in bottle before it fully spreads its wings. Then serve with pheasant. 1,277 cases. (Dec 2012)"

PinotFile: "14.8% alc., 281 cases. 4.4-acre vineyard, yields 1.02 tons per acre. Aged 17 months in 30% new French oak barrels. Unfiltered. Light reddish color in the glass. Enticing aromas of strawberries, red cherries and sandalwood. More vineyard terroir evident that the other vineyard-designated Pinots in this vintage. Flavorful core of cherries, brown spice and a hint of vanilla wrapped in balanced tannins. Not the fruit intensity of the other Pinots in this vintage, but the long aromatic finish leaves an enticing trail of cherries. A feminine wine in a dominatrix way. Very good. (12/10/12)"

Producer notes: "Calera’s Mt. Harlan Vineyards are located in the Gavilan Mountains 25 miles east of the Monterey Bay. The site was chosen for its limestone soils and ideal climate. At an average elevation of 2,200 feet it is among the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California. Tasting Notes: Light garnet hue and delicate aromas of cardamom, graphite, sandstone, rose petals and blueberry instantly draw you into this fascinating and unusual Pinot Noir. 'Very Good,' PinotFile: "14.5% alc., 300 cases. Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Very bright and spicy cherry aroma which builds in intensity over time in the glass. Ornate cherry flavor with accents of Chinese five-spice, cola, anise and oak, displaying soft tannins, no rough edges, and finishing with a hi-tone cherry presence and juicy acidity. Producer notes: "Medium strawberry/garnet color. Primary and bright fruit aromas dominate pre-release: juicy strawberry, cherry and raspberry references make this wine surprisingly open and enticing. There’s a bit of spice and earth in both nose and in the mouth, but the fruit and baby fat are still dominating the flavor profile of this ebullient, young cuvee. Bright and structured in the mouth, but while persistently slutty in its infancy, we expect the middle and finish to fill in as the wine settles into its role as a long-term ager. Don’t let its sexy winking fool you into drinking it young--this one is born for the cellar and we expect it to start shining in about 3 years. A spectacular, cool vintage very similar to 2007 and 2005, this cool climate gem was a pleasure to grow and make: no real hardships or challenges in the growing or vinification. Dark red cherries, flowers, smoke and minerals wrap around the palate in this firm, beautiful Pinot. This is one of the more structured wines in the Copain lineup. Today it comes across as a bit virile but the tannins should soften with further bottle age. Darker fruits and floral notes reappear on the finish, adding further complexity and nuance. Producer notes: "Named for a landmark redwood tree, the Monument Tree vineyard is planted with an eastern sloping exposure, avoiding the late afternoon sun. The wine is a blend of clones 115 and 777, and soils are comprised of decomposed sandstone and loam that are starkly expressed in the spicy fruit they yield. Tasting Notes: Coastal proximity and a lengthy ripening period result in deep, developed and concentrated fruit, as the 2011 Monument Tree Pinot Noir proudly displays. It manages to be both very rich and refined at one and the same time, and, from first sniff to finish, it presents a wealth of juicy young fruit juxtaposed with creamy oak and root-beer-like spice. It never gives in to simple sweetness but is instead a serious, many-layered wine of immense richness and savor, and it has the structure and stamina of one that will age famously for a good many years. Evocatively nuanced aromatic profile offering an array of scents including black cherry, dark berry, forest floor, baking spice, oak cask and old wallet. Moderately rich and very flavorful with intense flavors of black plum, dark berries with an earthy undertone and a hint of spice and vanilla. The fruit is boisterous and rich, but there is quite a bit less in the way of energy, minerality or tension. By just about any other producer’s standards, this would be a fabulous wine, but at DuMol the 2010 Ryan is only outstanding. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. (Apr 2013)"

Slow to open in the glass, but offers considerable appeal over time. Aromas of fresh blackberry tart, forest floor, rose petal, oak and saddle. Discreetly concentrated core of black raspberry and black plum fruit with a hint of spiced chocolate and vanilla wafer. 94 points Wine & Spirits: "Selected from Flowers's most recent planting, 43 acres rising from 1,400 to 1,875 feet above the Pacific, with views of the fog and the ocean below. The best wines from this vineyard have shown glimmers of grand cru sophistication and this 2009 develops in a way that parallels a great Burgundy. It starts off meaty, seemingly simple in its directness, until it begins to deepen, the tannins going through an adolescent moment with a character like spiced tea and cheese rind. By the next day, those tannins have turned toward a ferrous minerality and the wine is racy, dense, floral, as red as persimmon, powerful in an oceanic sense. If you don't believe there is terroir character in California pinot noir, spend some time at this vineyard, then go home and taste this wine. (Oct 2011)"

'Very Good,' PinotFile: "14.5% alc., 1,090 cases. This vineyard is 10 miles north of Goldeneye’s Confluence Vineyard where there is more fog. 8 clones of Pinot Noir. More than 100 barrel lots are evaluated three different times in blind tastings over the course of a year to discover lots that are unmistakably Gowan. Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Intensely fragrant with aromas of black cherries, black currants and blackberries with oak-driven accents. Oak-kissed array of dark fruit flavors, moderately rich and dense, wrapped in firm, mildly astringent tannins, finishing long and lush. A little withdrawn and needs more time to integrate the oak. Still solid the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. (6/25/12)"

Producer notes: "Gowan Creek is the home of our winery and offers a perfect mid-valley winegrowing location that combines warmer Anderson Valley elements with coastal fog and cooling influences from the northern end of the valley. In 2009, this unique terroir produced a lavish beast of a wine with a lush, round palate and layers of brooding blackberry, dark plum, wild cherry, earth and Asian spice. Aged 17 months in 35% new French oak barrels. Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. The nose evolves slowly in the glass, revealing enticing aromas of berry pie, spice and musk. Delicious essence of black plums and black raspberries with a wild, untamed quality. Relatively delicate on the palate, yet the fruit really pops and coats the mouth for at least a minute on the finish. Seamless, with undeniable charm. (2/23/12)"

Producer notes: "Our 2011 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a blend of three vineyards; Gap’s Crown, Terra de Promissio and Walala. The first two are located in the southern portion of the Sonoma Coast appellation and lie directly in the path of the Petaluma Wind Gap’s Pacific Ocean cooling and the maritime influence of the San Pablo Bay. The third vineyard, Walala Vineyard, is from the northwestern coastal reaches near Annapolis. The wines from the Petaluma Gap region are rich, voluptuous and structured with dark black and blue fruit, deep texture and broad structure. The wines from Walala are red fruit driven with clean earth, a slight spice, elegant structure and a complex core. We recommend drinking this wine between 2015 and 2020. Aromatics: The wine shows focused blueberry, black cherry and ripe currants in the nose, followed by intense blackberry and cassis. In the background there is a dusting of cocoa and black plum. On the palate: The 2011 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir exhibits dark black and blue fruits that drive down the center of your palate and slowly melt into all areas of the mouth.
