Producer notes: "86% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. This Napa Valley Merlot is blended to offer the complexity and balance of a young wine, while embodying the diversity of the whole Napa Valley appellation. This wine is medium-bodied and balanced with a smooth entry, integrated soft tannins, and a long finish. The aroma is lifted with raspberry, red currant, blueberry, cherry cola, and delicate spice. The flavors are polished with blackberry, plum, black cherry, toast, and a hint of herb."

Wine Spectator: "[$42 list] Soft and supple, displaying dusty cedar and red currant aromas, with elegant, well-focused plum, espresso and roasted dill flavors. Drink now through 2012. (3/31/09)"
Producer notes: "This is a Cabernet lover’s Merlot blended from four of our organically-grown vineyards. Mouth coating flavors of plums, black tea and cocoa powder are backed with a nice tannin structure to make this a perfect wine with beef tenderloin, rack of lamb or barbecued pork."

94 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2005 Pedestal features the peripatetic Michel Rolland. His wine is 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc aged for 22 months in 85% new French oak. Deep crimson-colored, it offers an enticing perfume of toasty new oak, pencil lead, spice box, clove, allspice, red currants and black cherry. Seamless on the palate, the wine has gobs of ripe, savory flavors, well-concealed tannin, excellent aging potential, and a long, pure finish. It will provide much pleasure between 2012 and 2025. Long Shadows is the brainchild of Alan Shoup, longtime CEO of Chateau Ste-Michelle. It is a consortium of seven different labels, each with its own star winemaker who has a 25% share in the brand. The concept is that each 'is dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a ‘best of type’ that reflects the winemaker’s signature style."

94 points Robert Parker: "The 2005 Merlot is looking sensational, and far better than I thought last year. There are 3,000 cases of this wine, which is aged in 85% new Taransaud barrels. Blended with 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine reveals distinctive black cherry and berry notes intermixed with chocolate, mocha, caramel, and scorched earth. The wine is full-bodied, fleshy, but has underlying acidity and a long, layered finish. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15+ years."

Producer notes: "Rombauer Vineyards' 2005 Napa Valley Merlot bursts with cherry, ripe plum, and spice aromas. Tannins are deftly interwoven through a core of plum, with layers of dark berries shaded with hints of cocoa. The wine lingers on the palate with fruit and moderate tannins. It drinks well now but will improve further with age. 18 months in American and French oak. 77% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon."

Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "($70 list) Bright, deep red-ruby. Red berries, tobacco, pine resin and a whiff of herbs on the nose. Suave, young and dry, with a slightly tart quality to the flavors of plum, redcurrant and tobacco. There's a light greenness here but also a subtle smoky sweetness. Finishes fresh and firm, with a fine dusting of tannins. This has been a consistently intriguing and understated merlot in recent vintages. (Dec 2008)"
