Producer notes: "Our 2007 Merlot boasts richly fruity aromas of ripe black plum and cherry fruit, complemented by savory roasted herb and toasted oak scents. Soft and open on the palate, with a round, luxurious texture and supple, seamless tannins, the wine’s lush black cherry and plum flavors culminate in a long, delectable finish brightened by a youthfully flinty, mineral-y tone. Sumptuous, elegant and beautifully balanced, this classic Napa Valley Merlot makes delicious drinking now, but will profit from another 2-3 years of bottle age. 90% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Malbec. Barrel aged 18 months in French oak (42% new). Alcohol 14.2%."

This Napa Valley Merlot is blended to offer the complexity and balance of a young wine, while embodying the diversity of the whole Napa Valley appellation. This wine is medium-bodied and balanced with a smooth entry, integrated soft tannins, and a long finish. The aroma is lifted with raspberry, red currant, blueberry, cherry cola, and delicate spice. The flavors are polished with blackberry, plum, black cherry, toast, and a hint of herb."

Producer notes: "The 2007 Merlot opens with fresh cherry and currant aromas which are underscored with subtle notes of chocolate. Ripe flavors of cherry, cassis and plum are laced with hints of dried herbs and cigar box. The wine’s connection to its Rutherford appellation is reflected in the understated essence of earth and dust. Generous and plump, this wine’s lush texture is balanced with a delicate acidity that promises a long, memorable finish. Perfect with your favorite steak or roast duck"

Producer notes: "This is a Cabernet lover’s Merlot blended from four of our organically-grown vineyards. Mouth coating flavors of plums, black tea and cocoa powder are backed with a nice tannin structure to make this a perfect wine with beef tenderloin, rack of lamb or barbecued pork."

Producer notes: "The 2006 Foreshadow Merlot's aromatics are complex and show sandalwood, resin, spice, Bing Cherries, violets and subtle dried herbs. It enters the palate slightly sweet, has a full, round mid palate and shows flavors of roasted caramel, red currants, figs and cherries that are accented by graphite and a scorched earth minerality. A medium to long finish that is layered with smooth, fine grained tannins. Cellar 5-8 years. 95% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot."

Producer notes: "The 2008 vintage Marilyn Merlot is the 24th release of this fine wine. It is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine was aged in 100% oak barrels, 35% of which were new for this vintage. Aromas of Herbes de Provence, primarily thyme and lavender complement the oak components of vanilla and smoke from the wood. Moderate alcohol and good acidity make this wine a good pairing with fine foods. Vineyard locations for this wine are from our longtime growers in Yountville and Oakville regions of the Napa Valley (Yountmill Vineyard 88%, Beckstoffer Vineyard 12%). The striking and glamorous image of Marilyn Monroe in a purple, shoulderless cocktail dress is from photos done for the release of The Asphalt Jungle in 1950, a film noir classic for which John Huston was nominated for an Oscar and in which Marilyn plays to perfection her role as the mistress of a crooked attorney."

Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Merlot DuBrul Vineyard was aged in 40% new oak. It displays a perfume of cedar, spice box, cassis, cherry blossom, and black cherry. Soft and easy-going, this is a savory, spicy effort meant for near-term drinking. (Aug 2010)"
Producer notes: "What made this wine was in winemaker’s speak -- hang time. As these clusters hung into the third week of September they arrived at physiological ripeness when our northern days had gotten considerably shorter. With the fruit ripening in comparatively cool temperatures all the flavor esters and color in the skins were elevated resulting in fullest flavor, cooler, almost perfect pH/acid balance; each harbingers of age worthiness. This combined with Hugh Shiels masterful grape growing and a site that competes on the world’s stage for Merlot and you have this wine. I just tasted the 1999 vintage which is very youthful -- upon release I wrote -- "this wine is powerful, super-intense, and should age well into the next decade." Now I have to say that it will age well into this decade as well. 163 cases made."

91 points Robert Parker: "[$60 list] The 2007 Merlot is a sumptuous, round, silky, generous, delicious effort offering plenty of berry fruit, mocha, and chocolatey undertones. Like so many wines that have emerged from this Spring Mountain vineyard, it offers delicious drinking. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years. (Dec 2009)"
91 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "Deeply fruited, impressively filled with a very keen sense of dark, well-ripened cherries that indelibly marks it as Merlot, Paloma's latest is an especially well-balanced working that is at once very rich, refined and remarkably polished. It does show a streak of fine-grained finishing tannins, but there is nothing so coarse as to raise any worries, and the wine's fruit eases its way past a bit of last-minute astringency. As good Merlot will, this one might tempt early drinking, but it has a long life before it and should evolve for years to come. (Sep 2010)"
Producer notes: "Complex aromas of black berry fruits, black stone fruits, chocolate, tobacco, spice and floral notes with a mineral overtone. On the palate the wine has a big silky mouth feel, well balanced, with flavors of berries, fruit, cocoa, cassis, and spice, and a long spicy finish. Fruit tannins are big, but not harsh and are well integrated with the strong fruit component."

Producer notes: "92% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc. The 2006 Paradigm Merlot has aromas of red plums, cedar and spice. It is pure in its aromas and has flavors that match. It is soft across the palate with lingering plumy fruit, light dusty tannins and a balanced lively acidity. This is a medium body Merlot, easy to drink, and will go great with many foods. 1,239 cases produced."

Not yet reviewed; 2007 vintage rated 92 points by Robert Parker: "The 2007 Merlot (91% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) boasts a dense purple color as well as a gorgeously sweet perfume of white chocolate, coffee beans, plums, black currants, and a hint of mocha. Full-bodied and dense with layers of fruit and glycerin as well as a sumptuous texture, this terrific wine can be drunk over the next 10-15+ years. (Dec 2009)"

Producer notes: "Rombauer Vineyards' 2005 Napa Valley Merlot bursts with cherry, ripe plum, and spice aromas. Tannins are deftly interwoven through a core of plum, with layers of dark berries shaded with hints of cocoa. The wine lingers on the palate with fruit and moderate tannins. It drinks well now but will improve further with age. 18 months in American and French oak. 77% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon."

92 points Wine Spectator: "Dark and muscular, with blackberry and graphite aromas and youthful, concentrated black cherry and mocha fruit that show notes of roasted herb, with a hint of game. (4/30/10)"
90 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Merlot (a 10,000-case cuvee that includes 15% Cabernet Sauvignon) may be the finest Merlot I have ever tasted from Shafer. Reasonably priced for a Napa Valley Merlot, it is characterized by elegance and substance. Its dark ruby/purple hue is followed by notes of wood spice, forest, flowers, berries, mocha, and wood smoke, medium to full body, sweet tannins, and good freshness. Enjoy it over the next 12+ years. (Dec 2009)"
90 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Moderately saturated red-ruby. Restrained but nuanced nose offers plum, redcurrant, tobacco and nutty oak. A nicely balanced, penetrating midweight with modest flesh but a silky texture and intriguing, understated redcurrant and mocha flavors. This young wine relies as much on its acids as on its suave tannins for structure. Finishes with good persistence and subtle soil tones. (May/Jun 2010)"
90 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very ripe, very sweet and awash in very obvious oak, this outgoing wine embraces the Shafer style to a "tee". It is full, fat and fleshy on the palate with layers of mocha, black cherries, vanilla and cream running its length, but it is also a bit hot at the finish with a rise in last-minute tannins that says it would be wise to set it aside for a few years despite its many immediate appeals. (Mar 2010)"

Producer notes: "94% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc. Our 2004 Twomey Merlot is an elegant, concentrated wine that balances delicacy and expression of fruit. It has a dark ruby color and a complex nose of black cherry, raspberry, violets and dark chocolate, with hints of lightly toasted bread. It offers multiple layers of cherry liqueur, toffee, chocolate and amaretto flavors, culminating in a long fruity finish. Given proper cellaring, this full-bodied Merlot will continue to give drinking pleasure until 2016."

Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "($70 list) Bright, deep red-ruby. Red berries, tobacco, pine resin and a whiff of herbs on the nose. Suave, young and dry, with a slightly tart quality to the flavors of plum, redcurrant and tobacco. There's a light greenness here but also a subtle smoky sweetness. Finishes fresh and firm, with a fine dusting of tannins. This has been a consistently intriguing and understated merlot in recent vintages. (Dec 2008)"

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A beautiful Merlot, noble and classic. It doesn't have the stuffing for cellaring, but is absolutely lovely now, with fine, brisk tannins framing flavors of cherries, herbs and sweet oak, and a lingering finish. An Editors' Choice. (Dec 2009)"
Producer notes: "85% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Syrah. This appealing wine offers aromas of blackberry, violet and oak. It gains its depth from a combination of plum, wild berries and cola flavors that are beautifully balanced and lingering. The wine is ready to enjoy now and will also improve with cellaring to 2012."
