87 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$20 list] A lovely Merlot, soft and supple. Shows a fine balance of cherry fruit, herbs and sweet oak, with modest alcohol and dusty tannins. Very nice and elegant. (Dec 2009)"
Producer notes: "Anyone who thinks Merlot is a lightweight has never tried this one. The 2007 is a well-structured wine with the kind of characteristics often ascribed to Cabernet. Those characteristics are the result of the unique qualities of the five vineyards on the valley's southern end that provided the fruit for the 2007. The heavier soils in each of the vineyard sites allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and develop a wide range of flavors. What you will find here is a lush Merlot with aromas of black cherry, plum, blackberry and cassis. In the glass are big flavors of plum, vanilla and dark cherry. On those occassions when you are about to reach for a Cab to serve with a particular dish, try this Merlot. You'll be surprised how good a partner it is."

Producer notes: "Ariel 2007 California Merlot offers all of the benefits of a red wine, with less than half of one percent alcohol. The grapes were grown in San Luis Obispo county, from vineyards known for superior Merlot production. Ariel California Merlot has aromas of cherry, raspberry and cassis, combined with a white chocolate, clove and oak bouquet from the barrel aging. At its optimum maturity two years after bottling, it can be enjoyed immediately or held for up to seven years. Ariel Merlot is the ideal accompaniment to beef, lamb and wild game dishes."

Producer notes: "Merlot (77%), Syrah (9%), Cabernet Sauvignon (14%). Our Merlot, deep garnet in color, has rich black cherry fruit aromas, with hints of eucalyptus and oak. The addition of Clone 6 Cabernet sauvignon adds structure to the wine, giving a Cabernet-like mouthfeel, while the Syrah adds sweet fruit to the finish. Soft tannins balance well with good fruit acidity and concentrated fruit flavors to yield a wine that will develop well with several years of aging. A rich, concentrated, full-bodied Merlot with a lingering finish and supple mouthfeel."
Not yet reviewed; 2005 vintage rated 90 points by Wine Enthusiast: "Soft, juicy and sweet in fruity essence, this polished Merlot brims with flavors of cherries, red currants, licorice, toffee and Asian spices. It’s a full-bodied red wine to drink now with a nice steak. (Jun 2009)"

Producer notes: "90% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. The 2007 vintage is accessible and balanced to accompany with a wide range of dishes. This vintage of Merlot is concentrated, with smoky oak notes from a mix of mostly French and a bit of American barrels. The flavors and aromas are forward, perfumed plush red fruit, and ripe without being overpowering -- a wine that compliments food. There is also a touch of cedar from the oak barrels. The combination of structure, depth and richness makes this 2007 Merlot drinkable now but it could easily age if you can wait. 415 cases produced."

Producer notes: "Our 2006 Merlot impresses right off the bat with pretty black cherry and dark plum aromas that gain complexity from subtle earth, hazelnut, black tea, cocoa and toasty oak tones. On the beautifully structured palate, the wine offers pure, concentrated, black cherry and plum flavors balanced by bright acidity and round, supple tannins, concluding in a long, elegant finish that showcases a refreshing minerality and savory black-tea spice tone. Delicious now, this cool-vintage Merlot will blossom further with another 2-3 years of bottle age."

Producer notes: "Our 2007 Merlot boasts richly fruity aromas of ripe black plum and cherry fruit, complemented by savory roasted herb and toasted oak scents. Soft and open on the palate, with a round, luxurious texture and supple, seamless tannins, the wine’s lush black cherry and plum flavors culminate in a long, delectable finish brightened by a youthfully flinty, mineral-y tone. Sumptuous, elegant and beautifully balanced, this classic Napa Valley Merlot makes delicious drinking now, but will profit from another 2-3 years of bottle age. 90% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Malbec. Producer notes: "86% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. This Napa Valley Merlot is blended to offer the complexity and balance of a young wine, while embodying the diversity of the whole Napa Valley appellation. This wine is medium-bodied and balanced with a smooth entry, integrated soft tannins, and a long finish. The aroma is lifted with raspberry, red currant, blueberry, cherry cola, and delicate spice. The flavors are polished with blackberry, plum, black cherry, toast, and a hint of herb."

95 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "If one looks at the technical data for this wine, it is less ripe than the '85, but its character is fuller, richer, more opulent in the nose and at the center of its flavors. And, to our taste, it has aged extremely well. Because of its acidity, we would drink it up before the fruit fades and the typical sour edge of the older wines creeps in, but make no mistake, this is first rate Merlot in its middle years, and it is one of our favorites from the tasting. Producer notes: "The 2007 Merlot opens with fresh cherry and currant aromas which are underscored with subtle notes of chocolate. Ripe flavors of cherry, cassis and plum are laced with hints of dried herbs and cigar box. The wine’s connection to its Rutherford appellation is reflected in the understated essence of earth and dust. Generous and plump, this wine’s lush texture is balanced with a delicate acidity that promises a long, memorable finish. Perfect with your favorite steak or roast duck"

Producer notes: "The 2006 Foreshadow Merlot's aromatics are complex and show sandalwood, resin, spice, Bing Cherries, violets and subtle dried herbs. 'Enthusiast 100 of 2008' and 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This bright, aromatic, vivid wine opens with a bowlful of berries and cherries. There is plenty of acid under the ripe fruit, which takes center stage at the moment. The significant addition of Carmenère (from the Seven Hills vineyard) adds black pepper to the engaging mix of flavors. Despite its youth, the flavors persist for a remarkably long finish." 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is 100% varietal, from the Loess, Seven Hills, Pepper Bridge, and Mill Creek Upland vineyards. A deep, intense take on Merlot, it's so dark and concentrated that it dances on the edge of bitterness, but in a style reminiscent of the finest Italian Merlots, that use that flavor to define and elucidate a dark and potent wine. In the mouth it fills out with luscious cherry and plum and blackberry fruit, baking chocolate, coconut and nougat. Yet it remains sleek and stylish, with a strong licorice note. Cellar Selection. (Aug 2010)"
92 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Merlot (100%) spent 15 months in a mix of new and used French oak. It exhibits an aromatic array of smoke, spice box, violets, black cherry, and black raspberry. Elegant on the palate with excellent volume, concentrated, spicy flavors, and a hint of minerality, it has enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years and will offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2022 if not longer. 94 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2005 Pedestal features the peripatetic Michel Rolland. His wine is 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc aged for 22 months in 85% new French oak. Deep crimson-colored, it offers an enticing perfume of toasty new oak, pencil lead, spice box, clove, allspice, red currants and black cherry. Seamless on the palate, the wine has gobs of ripe, savory flavors, well-concealed tannin, excellent aging potential, and a long, pure finish. It will provide much pleasure between 2012 and 2025. Long Shadows is the brainchild of Alan Shoup, longtime CEO of Chateau Ste-Michelle. It is a consortium of seven different labels, each with its own star winemaker who has a 25% share in the brand. The concept is that each 'is dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a ‘best of type’ that reflects the winemaker’s signature style."
