Enticing aromas of leather and cigar box frame scents of black fruit. Flavors of plums and blackberries are at the fore, woven with umami mushroom/soy nuances, savory herbs, black olive and spice notes. All well integrated and balanced, this wine is enjoyable now, though firm, and will just get better with a little age. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc.
Not yet reviewed; 2009 vintage rated 95 points and 'Top 100 Wine of 2012 (#89)' by Wine Enthusiast: "Good enough to be a reserve, this includes just 4% Merlot, with the balance Cabernet. Smooth and supple, full of lovely toasty aromatics, it layers rich cherry against the lush barrel spice. A companionable wine, already drinking beautifully, but perfectly fine to cellar for up to a decade. Alcohol 14.8%."

95+ points Robert Parker: "[$400 list] The 2006 Howell Mountain has already gone into hiding, but there is no doubting its enormous weight, richness, note of graphite, and minerality. The wine possesses enormous concentration and richness as well as lots of blue and black fruits, but I wouldn’t touch it for 7-10 years. It should keep for 30 years. (Dec 2009)"

Using intense fruit from the low-yielding hillsides of Stags Leap, Angeline's team crafts quintessential hillside Napa Cabernet. Big, dark, dense fruit flavors are pure and bold on the palate but have a certain poise and agility supported by the bright acid and moderate tannins. There is plenty of ripeness here but it spares you from being overly jammy. The layers of fruit are accompanied by layers of spices, cigar box, chocolate and just the right touch of toasty oak. The well-balanced, complex and robust structure means you can drink this now free of any guilt. However, cellaring will be rewarded for those who have the patience. But who does?
Not yet reviewed; 2008 vintage rated 91 points and 'Editors' Choice' by Wine Enthusiast: "What a nice Cab! It’s so softly intricate, so complex, so dry and interesting, you just want to drink the whole bottle now with anything related to beef. Shows blackberry, black currant and oak flavors, with a fine balance of acids and tannins, and is ready to drink now."

Producer notes: "Back by popular demand is the latest version of multi-vintage Impromp2. This is a blend of wine from the cellar of Arns Estate. The wine is made from selections across clones and vintages 2005 - 2009. These are special wines that were not blended with the Arns Estate Cabernet. These small lots were intentionally set aside for this special blend because of their unique character and flavors. The rich older vintages along with the vibrant new vintages offer a great experience for the palate. Flavor characteristics of chocolate, cherries, anise, mulberry, black raspberries adds complexity and charm to this blend you can experience now or cellar for a later enjoyment. 100 cases produced."

Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Good deep red. Cool nose and palate dominated by eucalyptus, mint and licorice. Nicely delineated and fine-grained, but the pronounced mintiness currently overshadows the wine's rather delicate fruit. Finishes with slightly drying tannins. This distinctive wine always has a eucalyptus component... (May 2012)"
Owned by Chotsie and Alan Blank, grafted onto the Grace Family clone, managed by Jim Barbour and made at Grace Family by Gary Brookman, this special project shows how terroir affects a finished product. The wine displays Rutherford characteristics of sour cherry in association with the unique characteristics of this 1.8 acre plot of land. Above all, the wine exhibits the ‘hallmark’ of the Grace Family Clone: balance and complexity.

Producer notes: "Owner/Winemaker Matt Bonanno works closely with several vineyard managers throughout the Napa Valley to ensure the quality of his fruit and maximize the potential for each vintage. A deep ruby red, this seductive Cab shows classic Cabernet Sauvignon aromas of spice and sage followed by a mix of blueberries and blackberries with fresh raspberry notes. With a nice balance of acid and well integrated tannins, this wine is smooth, supple and sleek in the mouth: it is well balanced across the palate showcasing flavors of dark fruit, currants and hints of mineral and anise. 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Alcohol 13.9%."
Not yet reviewed; 2008 vintage rated 'Best Buy' by Connoisseurs' Guide: "It may not be the deepest or the most complex Cabernet to be had, but this very amicable wine is juicy and fruity and enriched by a nice bit of sweet oak. While it is lightly tannic, it is also a touch rounded at the edges, and no more than a couple of years in the cellar should do the trick. Its price is right in today's market."

Producer notes: "Calistoga is one of the warmest regions in the Napa Valley and ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. Our Cabernet comes from Barlow Vineyards which is located just south of Calistoga. Aromatically the wine offers ripe black cherry with hints of sweet vanilla. The palate is soft and luscious with flavors of dark plum and blackberry, finishing with soft supple tannins."

Producer notes: "Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 25%, Cabernet Franc 18%, Petit Verdot 9%. At just under 50%, the 2008 Cain Concept has the lowest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon that we have had to date. But the Cabernet was tight and concentrated, so we were able to build on this core with the other varieties. With aromas of pound cake, dried cherries, Christmas spice and mocha, the wine has a silky smooth entry with very fine tannins that flow continuously to a gentle easy finish. This is what the Napa Valley is all about. Enjoy the wine today, or in ten years."

Producer notes: "Merlot 53%, Cabernet Franc 26%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Petit Verdot 1%. The NV09 consists primarily of the excellent 2009 vintage (57%; hence the '09') complemented with a significant proportion of the 2008 vintage (43%). This has everything you want in a red wine: smooth entry, mouth filling, sits gently and lightly on the palate, just enough mouthwatering tannins to cleanse the palate. Aromas of black cherries, red cherries, cigar box. Core of red fruit carries through from beginning to end. Nicely refined. Nothing sticks out."

Sommelier Journal: "[$100 list] 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 6% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc; estate-grown and -bottled, due to be released Oct. 1. Dense, dark ruby in color, with little rim variation. Complex aromas of black cherry, freshly turned earth, coriander, fir, and sandalwood get a surprising citrus lift. Savory herbs, dark chocolate, and sweet espresso come through on the palate. This version is balanced and concentrated, with supple tannins. (7/31/11)"

Producer notes: "61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot. Due to the low yields and relatively late ripening, the Cain Five is fresh and fi rmly structured, with potential for long and consistent aging. This marks the second vintage of the return to 100% Cain Vineyard Estate Bottled, which means 100% of the grapes were grown in the Cain Vineyard. It is a worthy successor and perfect companion to the 2007, with its floral-herbal perfumed nose, and its juicy, mouth-wateringly vibrant palate."

Producer notes: "The 2009 Benchland Select displays a beautifully deep, dark ruby color and a characteristically lavish nose of dense ripe boysenberry, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit mingled with pronounced loam and mocha scents. Full-bodied and lush on the palate, its deeply concentrated boysenberry, blackberry, cassis and dark chocolate flavors have a wonderful freshness and purity that extend into a long, savory finish framed by ripe, supple tannins and sumptuous toasted oak tones. Although this opulent Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon drinks beautifully now, it will reveal even greater dimension with another 6-8 years’ aging. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 80% Oakville and 20% Rutherford Districts. Barrel aged 20 months in French oak (36% new). Alcohol 14.8%."

Producer notes: "Carpe Diem Cabernet Sauvignon is made in a classic winemaking style, respecting the characteristics of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. The wine is fruit forward, elegant, and exhibits soft tannins, making it pleasant to drink in its youth. Oak is used sparingly to keep Carpe Diem fresh and vibrant. Grapes for the Carpe Diem Cabernet Sauvignon have been selected exclusively from the best vineyards in world renowned Napa Valley. Vinified under the strict supervision of Christian Moueix?'s winemaking team in Yountville, California, Carpe Diem embodies the essence of Napa Valley classic Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a refreshing and straightforward wine expressing its bountiful fruit with bright aromas of wild strawberries and soft tannins. Alcohol 14.1%."

Wine Spectator recently called Carmen Policy's Casa Piena "one of the three best up and coming wineries in Napa." Policy was a San Francisco 49ers front office executive during the 1980s and 1990s. This bottling, "Our Gang", signifies the grandchildren in the family. As the owner's say, they hope the label changes with the addition of more "vines" in the next few years.

Producer notes: "As Chappellet Mountain Cuvee was, Cervantes Mountain Cuvee is blended around a core of Cabernet, but it also includes a significant amount of Merlot to add suppleness and fruit. The 2010 Cervantes is dark and concentrated, with lovely aromas of ripe cherry, berry fruit, cola, cedar and coffee. Supporting notes of sweet oak, anise and cassis add brightness and nuance to the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is packed with radiant tannins, mouthfilling sweet fruit, chocolate and baking spices. Though eminently drinkable now for its flashy youthfulness, 2010 has also produced a cellar-worthy Cervantes that will gain complexity with additional aging."

Producer notes: "2011 was the coolest growing season in Washington State that anyone can remember. Thankfully, the Wahluke Slope AVA -- where most of the fruit for this blend is sustainable farmed -- is one of the warmest spots in the state, and so the fruit was able to achieve full ripeness and maturity by late October. The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards outperformed the Syrah vineyards and so the blend has evolved this vintage to be Cabernet Sauvignon dominated (72%) and just 28% Syrah. The aromas have the same signature blackberry, violet, currant and mocha that it's had in previous vintages but also takes on more of a cigar box component. These flavors carry through on the palate which is medium bodied, soft and luscious. A portion of the Syrah was whole cluster fermented which brings some dark, spicy flavors. After blending together the wine was aged in French oak for a short period to enhance the mocha, toast and sweet vanilla flavors and soften the mid palate."
