91 points Robert Parker: "I don’t know whether it’s me, the vintage character, or whether Randy Dunn and his son have intentionally softened their wines, but these 2004s are more opulent and up-front than previous renditions. Yet, they lack neither concentration nor richness. Those of us who have been cellaring Dunn’s wines for twenty years, waiting for them to reach maturity should be thrilled by this new development. (Dec 2007)"

98 points Robert Parker: "The 2004 Harlan Estate is probably the most precocious and accessible Harlan Estate that this perfectionist team has made. Already compelling, the wine has notes of roasted coffee, charcoal, blackberry, spring flowers, and some background sweet, toasty notes. Dense, fleshy, exuberant, even flamboyant by the standards of Bill Harlan, this wine exhibits no jaggedness or rough edges, has relatively high tannins, but they melt away on the palate. The wine is sensationally well-endowed, long, and rich -- a tour de force in winemaking. They can do no wrong at Harlan, and it is obvious, even in the most challenging vintages such as 1998, that this estate is a true grand cru/first growth, making wines of irrefutable world-class quality. Of course, none of this comes cheap, as the price is now moving up into the league with Screaming Eagle, but there are no shortage of takers. (Dec 2007)"
97 points Wine Spectator: "Firmly structured and tightly wound, with deep, perfumed currant, anise, sage and cedary oak notes, picking up a mineral and pebble edge and ending with a return to the spicy currant fruit. Long and persistent, with tight tannins. Best from 2009 through 2020. 2,126 cases made. Collectibles. (10/15/07)"
97 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Deep medium ruby. Superripe aromas and flavors of roasted black raspberry, licorice, mocha and minerals; just this side of liqueur-like. Thick, dense and silky but tightly wound and still youthfully closed. This compellingly deep wine boasts outstanding sweetness without coming off as over the top. Finishes with huge but sweet tannins and great length. (May/Jun 2007)"
The World of Fine Wine: "Intense nose, savory and a touch tarry. Fresher and livelier than the nose suggests, very ripe but shows a light touch; has a light herbal tone but is fully ripe. (Issue #32; 2011)"

97 points and 'Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2008', Wine Enthusiast: "Tasted in October, 2007, the wine was mute, offering little aromatically except for teasing notes of blackberries and oak. That shyness extended to the taste, where strong, hard tannins provide an almost impenetrable coat of armor to what’s inside. But right down the middle of the palate is a deep, intensely powerful stream of perfectly ripened cassis that’s all the proof you need of ageability. This is a magnificently structured young wine, reminiscent of a fine young Pauillac. Best after 2012, and should have another decade after that, at least. (Feb 2008)"
95 points Robert Parker: "The 2004 Insignia (the first to be 100% from the estate vineyards) is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec. I had this wine several times in Napa, and it is a beauty. A flashy, exuberant style for Phelps, with dense ruby/purple color, a gorgeous nose of creme de cassis, incense, licorice, smoke, and spice, the wine has supple tannins, a flamboyant, full-bodied mouthfeel, and tremendous length. Despite its precociousness and up-front style, this wine should evolve easily for 20 or more years. There are 10,000 cases of the 2004. (Dec 2007)"
94 points Wine Spectator: "[$225 list] Tight and complex, with a deep, potent core of ripe currant, herb, sage and dusty berry fruit, shaded by light toasty, cedary oak. Deftly balanced, intense and concentrated, this is young and closed in now, yet you can taste the depth and richness. Tannic. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2010 through 2020. (10/15/07)"
94 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "72% Cabernet Sauvignon; 14% Malbec; 12% Petit Verdot; 2% Malbec. Among the richest and most succulent wines to be had in December's very fine bunch, Phelps's latest Insignia is a sweet and flamboyant wine that literally oozes concentrated, cassis-like fruit. It is filled out by lots of very rich, creme caramel oak, and it finds added dimension by way of its loamy earth accents. Its ample, well-tailored tannins go nearly unnoticed in light of its wonderfully plush texture, and if there are temptations to enjoy this plump and polished offering in its youth, there are manifold reasons to believe that it will continue to unfold and to improve for a decade or more. (Dec 2007)"
'5-star California Red Blends' and 'Best of Show', Quarterly Review of Wines: "72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec. Big, deep, rich, bold, utterly riveting, black fruit, spice and dark chocolate flavors. (Summer 2008)"

92 points Robert Parker: "Classic aromas of cedar, black currants, licorice, graphite, and spicy oak emerge from the full-bodied, powerful, opulent, opaque purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. This concentrated, rich, impressively-endowed Cabernet is a steal for the price. Moreover, it should drink well for 15 or more years. (Dec 2006)"

90 points Robert Parker: "[$36/750ml list] The 2004 Merlot (which includes 3% Cabernet Franc) is a dense, rich, concentrated effort boasting a dark ruby/purple color along with plenty of black cherry and currant fruit intermixed with espresso roast and earth notes. Its moderate tannin is sweet and well-integrated. Drink it over the next decade. (Dec 2006)"
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$36/750ml list] A lovely Merlot, rich and fine, with lots of blackberry and cherry fruit, but also with more complex, earthier notes of olive tapenade, balsamic vinegar and sautéed wild mushrooms. The wine should hold for some years, but is really at its best now. (12/31/07)"
Producer notes: "The 2004 Keenan Merlot is composed of 75% Keenan Estate Merlot. 32% of the wine is Merlot fruit harvested from the Napa Carneros region. In addition, 3% Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has been added to the blend in order to add further complexity and structure. The '04 Merlot has been aged in 33% new French and American oak barrels for 18 months. The resulting wine shows intense aromas of black cherry, blackberry, and cassis. Complex nuances of cocoa and coffee bean emerge as the wine opens up. This is a 'big' Merlot that will age for many years to come. Alcohol 14.3%."

96 points Robert Parker: "Their debut vintage, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was bottled earlier this year, is a fabulous effort. This 350-case cuvee boasts an opaque purple color as well as an expressive nose of scorched earth, blackberries, cassis, and hints of espresso, melted chocolate, licorice, and spice box. Rich and full-bodied, with silky tannin, tremendous texture, and a profound, multilayered mouthfeel, this sensational Cabernet should drink well for two decades or more. Martha McClellan-Levy, the wine consultant for Blankiet and Sloan, and Bob Levy, longtime winemaker at Harlan, make up the husband and wife team behind this extraordinary vineyard designed to produce about 400 cases of a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Planted on the steep volcanic soils of Diamond Mountain at 500-600 foot elevation, with 2,900 vines per acre, this vineyard is planted as tightly as one is likely to find in Napa Valley. (Dec 2007)"
95 points Wine Spectator: "A rich, savory, extracted style, with strong mocha-espresso bean and spicy currant flavors that are intense, focused, long and persistent, ending with firm, ripe tannins. Combines power with finesse. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2015. 300 cases made. (10/15/08)"
93 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "(cabernet sauvignon with 5% merlot) Deep medium ruby. Complex, pure aromas of cassis, mocha, brown spices, licorice and menthol. Chewy, lush and aromatic in the mouth, with remarkable intensity and depth for a vineyard planted in 1999. Thoroughly ripe flavors of dark berries and spices. What I like best about this wine is its layered texture and very sweet, ripe, fine-grained tannins. This is the new venture of husband-and-wife team Bob Levy (winemaker at Harlan Estate and Bond) and Martha McClellan (Sloan and Blankiet), from a vineyard leased from McClellan's parents. The budbreak in this site on Franz Valley School Road, at an altitude of 600 to 700 feet, occurs later than in Oakville, and afternoon wind routinely cools things down during the peak of summer, according to Levy. (May/Jun 2007)"

91 points Robert Parker: "[$75 list] The impressive 2004 The Tempest, a 524-case blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot, exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color as well as a big, rich nose of melted licorice, white chocolate, espresso, blackberries, and cherries. Super-pure, intense, and silky-textured, this stunning wine will drink beautifully for 8-12 years. (Dec 2006)"

Robert Parker: "One of the forgotten varietals from Alexander Valley is Cabernet Sauvignon, and Scherrer does an excellent job with it. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Scherrer Vineyard Estate reveals attractive, dusty, black currant, and licorice notes with a hint of spicy oak in the background. Medium to full-bodied with sweet tannin, excellent concentration, and a nicely textured mouthfeel, it can be enjoyed now and over the next decade or more. (Dec 2008)"
Producer notes: "The very warm 2004 vintage led to very generous wine. Still very typical cassis and hint of red fruit, this also has a mouth-watering cherry lifesaver note on the finish, which really gives it a nice lift. Not sweet or cloying, it is ‘just right.’ It should age quite well due to its appropriate concentration, structure and balance, just like our other vintages. 200 cases produced."
