93 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2009 Pinot Noir Reed Vineyard is one of the more direct wines in this lineup. There is an exotic quality to the spice, orange peel and tobacco notes that is deeply intriguing, but in the end the fruit is more of a soloist than an orchestra. None of the Calera wines can be called straightforward, but the Reed is one of the most simple. Still, within the broader context of California Pinot Noir, it is fabulous -- just not as fabulous as its stable mates! Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. (Aug 2012)"
92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Vivid red. Candied red fruits and flowers on the fragrant nose. Sappy, seamless and gently sweet, offering powerful black raspberry and cherry flavors that become spicier with air. Closes smooth and very long, with resonating anise and raspberry compote flavors and gentle tannins. I found this bottling to be the most approachable of Calera's single-vineyard releases this year. (Nov/Dec 2012)"
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This shows a delicate silkiness and a sweet essence of wild raspberries that make it fully ready to drink now. But that quality obscures its subtleties of mineral, mushroomy earth and flower notes that add to this Pinot’s great complexity. As good as it is now, it will have no trouble negotiating the next decade. 1,277 cases produced. Alcohol 14.7%. (Oct 2012)"
92 points and ' Year's Best Pinot Noir,' Wine & Spirits: "Reed’s north-facing slope gives wines that tend to be more linear than Calera’s other bottlings. In 2009, Reed leads with the green scents of whole cluster fermentation -- rhubarb and wintergreen -- and isn’t as filled-out as the Jensen (above). With air the fruit sweetens, knitting together those spicy aromas and the pronounced cranberry-like acidity. It’s reticent right now, needing some time in bottle before it fully spreads its wings. Then serve with pheasant. 1,277 cases. (Dec 2012)"
PinotFile: "14.8% alc., 281 cases. 4.4-acre vineyard, yields 1.02 tons per acre. Aged 17 months in 30% new French oak barrels. Unfiltered. Light reddish color in the glass. Enticing aromas of strawberries, red cherries and sandalwood. More vineyard terroir evident that the other vineyard-designated Pinots in this vintage. Flavorful core of cherries, brown spice and a hint of vanilla wrapped in balanced tannins. Not the fruit intensity of the other Pinots in this vintage, but the long aromatic finish leaves an enticing trail of cherries. A feminine wine in a dominatrix way. Very good. (12/10/12)"
Producer notes: "Calera’s Mt. Harlan Vineyards are located in the Gavilan Mountains 25 miles east of the Monterey Bay. The site was chosen for its limestone soils and ideal climate. At an average elevation of 2,200 feet it is among the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California. Tasting Notes: Light garnet hue and delicate aromas of cardamom, graphite, sandstone, rose petals and blueberry instantly draw you into this fascinating and unusual Pinot Noir. Reed vineyard, with its north facing aspect gives us a most alluring mélange of black plum, forest floor, dried cranberry, rhubarb fennel, mint, black cherry, sage and white pepper. The texture is graceful, lithe and balanced with assertive, playful tannins promising a long and interesting life. A Pinot Noir collector’s delight."

91 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "Luisa Ponzi decided not to make any vineyard designates in the 2009 vintage so the 2009 Pinot Noir Reserve was the beneficiary of that fruit. Dark ruby red in color, it exhibits an alluring perfume of cedar, Asian spices, incense, lilacs, black cherry, and black raspberry. Meatier and richer than the Willamette Valley bottling, it has enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years and will deliver optimum drinking from 2012 to 2019. (Oct 2011)"
91 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Ruby-red. Raspberry, white pepper and potpourri on the perfumed nose. Lively, focused and sweet, with zesty flavors of red and dark berries and candied rose. This very fresh, energetic pinot shows noteworthy vivacity and finishes clean and persistent. (Jul/Aug 2012)"
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Detailed and elegant, this requires a little extra time and attention to show its strengths. It's a subtle mix of spice, cocoa and blackberry notes, with a touch of tobacco; the scents and flavors mingle seamlessly. A hint of cola surfaces on the finish, lingering gracefully for more than a minute. Alcohol 14%. (Aug 2012)"
Producer notes: "This Pinot Noir is a blend of LIVE Certified Sustainable fruit from Ponzi’s Aurora, Madrona and Abetina Vineyards, as well as fruit from Linda Vista, Lazy River, Gemini and Lemelson Vineyards. This wine meets requirements for the Oregon Certified Sustainable Wine program for responsible agriculture and winemaking practices certified by an independent third party."

94 points Wine & Spirits: "The steepest hills at WillaKenzie offer the epitome of expression for the 2008 vintage: softly etched scents of tar and pine, a hint of black soil and black cherry. The balance is perfectly poised between fruit and earth, the flavors at peak ripeness but not overt, the finish driven by fruit tannin. Those tannins are on point, marked by the oak's expression of Asian spice. With so much life coursing through this fresh wine, it's delicious now with roast salmon, yet suited to further bottle age. 548 cases. (Aug 2011)"
92 points Wine Spectator: "Fresh and zesty, brimming with black cherry, floral and mineral flavors, persisting impressively on the deftly balanced finish. Drink now through 2018. 550 cases made. (5/11/11)"
92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Full ruby with a bright rim. Bright scents of black raspberry, cherry, rose and spicecake, with a hint of vanilla. At once dense and lively, offering zesty red and dark berry and cherry-cola flavors that pick up weight and sweetness with air. Fine-grained tannins build on the long, oak-spiced finish, which features notes of candied cherry, flowers and licorice. (Jul/Aug 2011)"
92 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): "(14.2%). A restrained and coolly scented nose features discreet notes of spice and a broad range of both red and dark berries that are followed by rich and relatively full-bodied flavors that possess an attractively textured mouth feel as the extract really coats the palate. This delicious, intense and robust effort possess fine balance and exceptionally good length on the mildly austere finish. This is indisputably impressive. Drink: 2015+. (Oct 2011)"
91+ points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Pinot Noir Triple Black Slopes spent 15 months in 50% new oak. It offers up a reticent, brooding bouquet of wood smoke, exotic spices, and black fruits. Dense on the palate with outstanding concentration and balance, it needs at least 3-4 years of cellaring and will offer a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2023. (Oct 2011)"
Producer notes: "Triple Black Slopes takes its name from the symbol of three black diamonds indicating the most challenging ski slopes and reflects the steepness of the ground on which these vineyards are planted. All the blocks face south with elevations ranging from 350 to 670 feet and some sections exhibit a 45% slope. The shallowness of the topsoil layer and the angle of the noon sun help produce wines of great structure and intensity, but with lush fruit and supple tannins. Scents of concentrated darker fruits suggest cranberry, blueberries, and blackberries, which are accompanied by smoky spices
such as pepper and anise. This complex wine is elegantly balanced with crisp, upfront acidity and soft, sweet tannins that linger. Flavors of mixed red and black fruits offer a pleasant juiciness, which juxtaposes nicely with caramel flavors that come from the oak in the soft, long finish. It will certainly improve from 3 years of cellaring and age well for at least 10 to 12 years from its release date. Pair with olive-crusted leg of lamb, lamb ragout, and hard, salty cheeses such as extra-sharp cheddar or pecorino. We recommend that you open the wine an hour before serving. Alcohol 14.2%."
