90 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "($36 list; 100% tempranillo) Inky ruby. Extremely ripe nose offers powerful scents of roasted cherry and plum, along with dark chocolate and smoky herbs. The port-like qualities carry onto the palate, which offers sweet, deeply concentrated dark fruit compote, espresso and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes with a wallop of ripe plum and impressive length. A bit extreme for my taste, but delivers undeniably impressive impact and richness. (Sep/Oct 2008)"
Importer notes: "The Allende Rioja, a 100% Tempranillo cuvee, was barrel fermented in a mix of new and used French oak, remained in barrel for 13 months, and was bottled unfiltered. The wine is inky purple-colored and has a superb nose of pain grille, mineral, violets, cranberry, and blueberry. The youthful palate reveals layers of fruit, ripe tannin, and excellent balance. The wine merits another 3-4 years of bottle age and should drink well through 2020."

93 points Rhone Report: "Showing slightly more dark fruit, as well as additional density and depth, the 2010 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Campo de Borja, also a blend of 100% Garnacha, has copious blackberry liqueur, spice-box, cedar, chocolate, and licorice qualities to go with a full-bodied, seamless, supple mouth feel. Building in richness and depth over the evening, yet showing gorgeous purity as well as an overall elegant profile, it is hard to resist and I found myself pouring more than a few glasses. Already delicious and approachable, it should drink nicely for upwards of a decade. (Mar 2013)"
This wine is spectacular, and represents the perfect foil for grilled steak. Rich, full bodied and muscular, Alto Moncayo has riveting intensity and palate staining extract; this Spanish red is inky/purple, full-bodied, and rich. This pedal-to-the-metal offering should age handsomely for a decade. 600 cases produced.

90 points Rhone Report: "The 2010 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Campo de Borja Veraton is a blend of 100% Garnacha that offers up a polished, seamless, and silky profile that has a decidedly modern slant. Delivering a spice-laden array of red and black raspberry, creamy licorice, flowers, and a touch of white chocolate, it flows onto the palate with a light, clean texture, good acidity, and a poised, well focused finish. Lighter and more elegant than previous vintages, yet still playing in the same stylistic ballpark, it is an outstanding Garnacha that will evolve gracefully for 5-8 years. (Mar 2013)"
Producer notes: "Inky purple. A heady bouquet evokes ripe red berries, anise, mocha and pungent fresh flowers. Supple and sweet on entry, then more structured in the middle, offering deep, mineral-accented dried strawberry and cherry liqueur flavors. Takes a spicy turn on the long, sappy finish, which echoes the pure red berry qualities. 500 cases produced."

92 points Neal Martin (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Vinas de Gain is sourced from Tempranillo vines between 25 and 40 years of age and is matured in new, one- and two-year-old wood from several coopers. It has a very well-defined bouquet with crisp blackberry, cassis and licorice-scented fruit with fine minerality. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannins, crisp acidity and a lovely licorice, white pepper and citrus-fresh finish that is linear and nicely focused. Excellent. Drink 2014-2020. (Aug 2012)"
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$30 list] Tight and edgy but ultimately oaky and generous on the nose, with earth, vanilla, dried cheese and blackberry notes. Feels cushioned and complete, with depth of feel and flavor; tastes of deep berry, mild herbs and finally a toasty wave of coffee and chocolate takes over. Impressive for a 2008; drink now through 2014. (Apr 2012)"

Alcohol 15%. (12/31/12)"

It gives up scents of wood smoke, tobacco, Asian spices, violets, and black cherry. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate, it has plenty of spicy black fruit, a firm structure that should permit another 2-3 years of cellaring, and a lengthy, pure finish. Drink it from 2012 to 2022. (Jun 2010)"
90 points Wine Spectator: "[$30 list] Ripe expressive flavors of blackberry and currant are framed by toast and espresso notes in this dense, plush red, which verges on jammy, but firm tannins keep it in line, with acidity keeping it fresh through the finish. Seductively perfumed bouquet evokes black raspberry, cherry-cola, incense and Asian spices. Juicy, energetic red and dark berry flavors possess serious power but carry no excess fat and show no rough edges. Finishes spicy and very long, echoing the dark berry notes. This is already delicious. (Oct/Nov 2011)"
92 points Peñín Guide: "Colour: deep cherry. Nose: dry stone, mineral, ripe fruit, fruit expression, aromatic coffee. Palate: powerful, flavourful, dry, varietal, good structure, complex. (2011)"
90 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The entry-level wine, the 2008 Predicador, is made up of 96% Tempranillo with the balance Garnacha and Viura aged for 16 months in second use French oak. Fragrant notes of smoke, spice box, incense, tobacco, and assorted red and black fruits inform the nose of this relatively forward, savory, well-proportioned, lengthy effort. It has enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years and will provide optimum drinking from 2013 to 2020. (Jun 2011)"

92 points Robert Parker: "[$17 list] One of my favorite offerings from the Bodegas Borsao is the 6,000-case cuvee of the 2010 Tres Picos. Made from 100% Garnacha aged in equal parts stainless steel and French oak, this is the Bodegas Borsao’s interpretation of Chateauneuf du Pape. (But when’s the last time you saw a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape priced at $17 -- about 30 years ago?) Deep notes of roasted herbs, sweet black cherries and raspberries, peppers and spice soar from the glass of this dark ruby/purple-tinged wine. Full-bodied, rich, ripe, silky textured, pure and long, this unbelievable value should drink well for 3-4 years. (Oct 2012)"
91 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Glass-staining purple. Lively, faintly medicinal aromas of cherry, blueberry and licorice, plus hints of smoky herbs and flowers. Juicy and expansive, offering sweet, deeply pitched bitter cherry and dark berry flavors supported by a taut spine of acidity and fine-grained tannins. Finishes with powerful spicy thrust and suggestions of candied flowers and woodsmoke. This could pass for a northern Rhone wine, and a really good one at that. (Oct/Nov 2011)"
90 points and 'Smart Buys,' Wine Spectator: "This rich red is brimming with raspberry jam, chocolate, licorice and wild herb flavors. Firm tannins are well-integrated and buoyed by orange peel acidity. A lively modern style. Drink now through 2015. (4/30/12)"

More herbal and peppery than the less expensive Molino Loco, it is a well-made, deep, spicy, savory, earthy effort with more complexity and personality than its sibling. 91 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Vivid ruby color. Sexy, highly perfumed bouquet of raspberry, cherry-cola, potpourri and oak spices. Round, fleshy and seamless, offering vivid red berry flavors, no obvious tannins and slow-building spiciness. Very fresh wine with impressive finishing precision and sweet persistence. This is drinking well right now. (Sep/Oct 2009)"
90 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2007 Cepa 21 raises the bar slightly. Also 100% Tinto Fino, it exhibits a bouquet of toasty oak, pencil lead, spice box, and black fruits. On the palate it displays an elegant personality with ample succulent fruit, good depth, and a smooth texture. It will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring and offer prime drinking from 2011 to 2019. (Apr 2010)"
16/20 points Alex Hunt (The World of Fine Wine): "(14% ABV) Dense, brooding, compact nose. Still closed, hinting at brambly fruit and cream. Fairly massive on the palate but shaped by well-balanced acidity. Just a touch of overextraction evident on the finish. (Issue #33; 2011)"

94 points Rhone Report: "[$50 list] A mini Clos Erasmus (as it should be since it’s a straight declassification from the grand vin), the 2010 Laurel is comprised of 75% Garnacha, 20% Syrah, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 16 months in a combination of larger wooden vat and smaller, 2-4 year old barrels. A serious, age-worthy wine in its own right, this incredible wine has classy, pure aromas of black cherry, spice-box, balsamic, and lead pencil along with a full-bodied, deep, concentration, yet gorgeously fresh palate. Seemingly more elegant and structured than previous vintages, this knockout effort finishes with chalky minerality and blockbuster length. Give bottles another 2-3 years, and enjoy over the following decade. (Mar 2013)"
92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(75% garnacha, 20% syrah and 5% cabernet sauvignon, aged for 16 months in large and small used French oak casks): Saturated ruby. Sexy aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, incense and star anise, with a floral overtone. Sweet, palate-staining black and blue fruit flavors are silky and polished, becoming weightier and spicier with air. Sweet, gently tannic focused, finishing with floral and mineral nuances. Give this wine a little air of you plan on drinking it any time soon. (Sep 2012)"
90 points Neal Martin (Wine Advocate): "The 2010 Laurel is a blend of 75% Garnacha, 20% Syrah and 5% Cabernet aged half in troconic, wooden Taransaud vats plus 2- to 4-year-old barrels and it is essentially the second wine of Clos Erasmus. The 2010 has a very ripe, glossy bouquet with macerated dark cherries, soy and violets. The palate is full-bodied with succulent tannins married with good acidity, and pure dark fruits laced with balsamic, orange rind and a touch of rosemary, with fine delineation on the sensual finish. Drink 2014-2022. (Apr 2012)"

Direct from the winery! (Dec 2011) We had the opportunity to taste this wine in May 2011 at a library tasting of Cune wines ranging from the 1973 vintage to present. We were amazed at the freshness and vigor of these wines.
CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) is one of the most renowned and historic bodegas in all of Spain. Founded in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo, the company has been an integral part of the Rioja region’s ascendance in the world of fine wine. With their combination of traditional roots and innovative vision, CVNE has been one of Rioja’s most reliable sources for high quality wine. The company is still run by descendants of the Real de Asúa brothers, now represented by the fifth generation with current CEO Victor Urrutia Ybarra. Cune is the winery where the company began in 1879. It still sits on its original site, Barrio de la Estación, in Haro, Rioja Alta, directly next to the train station. They produce white, rosé, crianza, and reserva wines, sourced almost entirely from Alta fruit.
The Finest Wines of Rioja: "Imperial is one of the icons of Rioja and one of the strongest and most prestigious brands in Spain. It is produced as Reserva and, in exceptional years, Gran Reserva, though the latter will most probably disappear in the future, leaving only one Imperial... Current vintages age for at least 36 months in oak barrels... Imperial is archetypal Haro: serious, austere, subtle, refined, fresh, and balanced. It ages magnificently and, along with Viña Real, remains our favorite of the CVNE wines, even though the company now has more expensive wines in its portfolio... 1995 is remarkable among more recent wines. (2011)"
90 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Good full red. Deeply pitched aromas of smoke, minerals, leather and truffle. Supple and silky but nicely penetrating, with ripe, intense flavors of cherry, minerals and oak perfectly framed by harmonious acids. Subtle, textured Rioja finishing with good grip and thrust. (Jul/Aug 2003)"

This is generously ripe and red, focused on juiciness rather than extraction, deliciously Ribera del Duero in its abundant fruit and spice, but never tiring. (Jun 2013)"

91 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Deep, bright violet. Blackberry, cherry-vanilla and licorice on the oak-spiced nose. Deep, sweet and pliant, but with very good juicy character and spicy lift to its dark fruit preserve and licorice flavors. Finishes velvety and long, with fine-grained tannins, a repeating notes of licorice and impressive clarity. (Sep/Oct 2011)"
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$36 list] Dense, fruity and rock-solid as Ribera goes, this has aromas of cassis and blackberry that are full and lusty. The palate is thick and saturated, with rich black-fruit flavors, finishing long and potent. Drink now-2017. (Feb 2013)"

91 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "Finca Millara’s 2007 Mencia is the estate’s debut vintage. It spent 12 months in new French oak and is deep purple in color. The nose gives up an iron-like minerality, brooding black raspberries, smoke, and floral notes. Sweet, supple, and concentrated on the palate, this lengthy effort has enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years and will offer a drinking window extending through 2019. (Apr 2010)"
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "(abv: 13.5%) Floral and classy, with field herbs and pretty berry aromas. Fresh, juicy and forward in the mouth, with black fruit flavors led by dark plum. Finishes with complexity, tobacco and vanilla flavors. A stout, competent Mencía from a region worth paying attention to. (Oct 2011)"
