The 2010 Syrah is predominantly Malmesbury fruit about 1/3 of which is un-oaked. This intensely red colored wine shows big mouthfuls of red fruit and a hint of pepper,a silky and full-bodied texture with soft tannins and well integrated wood.
Not yet reviewed; 2009 vintage rated 87 points by Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, which wrote: "Soft and light on the nose with delicate aromas of raspberry and red cherry. The palate shows a bit more heft, with more concentrated flavors of juicy red plum flesh and berry mash laced with graham cracker and crushed iris petal accents. The structure is firm but balanced; drink now or hold for another year."

Producer notes: "The 2010 Chocolate Block is a blend of Syrah (72%); Cabernet Sauvignon (13%); Grenache noir (7%); Cinsault (6%) and Viognier (2%). Explosive nose with great depth of spiced fruit and violet-infused perfume. Striking freshness on a firmly structured palate with elegant and supple tannins. Spicy oak aromas covering a rounded mid-palate that reveals layers of fruit with intense purity. Classically styled with integrated tannins and balanced acidity to ensure a long, succulent and textured finish. Alcohol 14.7%."
Not yet reviewed; 2009 vintage rated 90 points by Wine Advocate: "A blend of 67% Syrah, 14% Grenache, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cinsault and 2% Viognier, the 2009 The Chocolate Block has a rustic, earthy bouquet with a touch of saddle-leather and Provencal herbs. The palate is smooth and rounded on the entry and is armed with crisp acidity to cut through that plush dark berried fruit interlaced with rosemary, white fennel and white pepper. Very svelte and harmonious towards the slightly oaky finish and demonstrating good length, The Chocolate Block is a well-crafted Rhone(ish) blend from Mark Kent and his team. Drink now-2015."

Producer notes: "Syrah 65%, Mourvèdre 32%, Viognier 3%. Both the Syrah and Mourvèdre component come from a Malmesbury vineyard with the Viognier sourced on Boekenhoutskloof. Tasting Notes: Abundance of black fruit flavours with hints of violet. Unpretentious easy drinking with smooth tannins and sweet berries on the palate."
86 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$11 list] Bright red mixed berries are infused with a mocha streak, filling the medium weight, but juicy palate. Straightforward and enjoyable with clean fruit flavors and a short but softly spiced finish. Alcohol 14.5%. (May 2012)"

93 points Wine Spectator: "This white cuts a bold swath, delivering flavors of dried Jonagold apple, fig, creamed pear, hazelnut and persimmon. Creamy and lush, held together by a finely beaded spine of acidity, with strong minerality kicking in on the lengthy finish. Showy and suave, yet balanced. Drink now through 2018. (6/15/13)"
The Tasting Panel: "Bright and juicy with lots of green apple and citrus; lush yet vibrant; consistently one of the best Southern Hemisphere Chards."
Producer notes: "A tight, minerally wine with classic Hamilton Russell Vineyards length and complexity. Unusually prominent pear and lime fruit aromas and flavours are brought beautifully into focus by a tight line of bright natural acid and a long, dry minerality. 95 points Neal Martin (Wine Advocate): "[$45 list] The sublime 2010 Pinot Noir is aged for 10 months in oak, of which 44% was new and the remainder used. It has a ripe bouquet of redcurrant, strawberry and Morello that shows no signs of under-ripeness that Hamilton’s Pinots occasionally exhibit due to leaf-roll. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe fleshy redcurrant and cranberry fruit that is underpinned by extremely fine tannins. This has wonderful build in the mouth and the finish is exuberant, almost feisty! This is an audacious Pinot Noir from one of South Africa’s top estates. Drink now-2020. (Dec 2012)"
92 points Wine Spectator: "Ripe, juicy and nicely compact, with plum sauce, blackberry and cherry skin notes wound at the core while mouthwatering anise and singed apple wood notes run along the edges. Possesses impressive cut and persistence. Drink now through 2015. (11/15/12)"
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine starts off bright and vibrant, with aromas of red-cherry skin, red currant and plum with touches of toasted oak and earth. The fruit flavors intensity on the palate, with additional accents of tea leaves, cocoa nib and black pepper that carry through to the medium-length finish. Surprisingly firmly structured, with gripping tannins and pronounced acidity. Drink 2014-2018. (May 2013)"

Lush and refined, with accents of blood orange and mouthwatering spice echoing on the finish. Muscat de Frontignan. Drink now through 2020. 300 cases imported. (6/15/13)"
94 points Wine & Spirits: "[$60/500ml list] Napoleon Bonaparte purportedly guzzled 30 bottles of Vin de Constance a month. If those vintages were anything like this 2007, it's easy to see why. Made from muscat de Frontignan planted at the original 1650s site, the grapes left to raisin on the vine, this feels ethereal. It's impressively delicate for its succulent texture, maintaining focused freshness in spring-like floral notes, while coating the palate in warmer flavors of apricot, tamarind, candied orange and exotic spice. The finish is bright and seemingly everlasting, mirroring the golden tone that emanates from the glass. (Feb 2013)"
Widely regarded as one of the world’s finest sweet wines, this famously seductive and iconic Vin de Constance is a gloriously sweet offering from the Klein Constantia winery in South Africa. The 2007 vintage was one of the best of the decade, with a long, cool season ensuring concentrated flavors and aromatic intensity. A warm, dry late summer created perfect conditions for the raisining of the Muscat de Frontignan grapes while still on the vine.

88 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$15 list] Young and fresh, this Chenin shows the stuffing to hold for another couple of years thanks to firm, tight acidity and a solid fruit core of pear, melon, guava and lime rind. The mouthfeel is round, but the palate isn’t heavy. An attractive hint of sweet spice unfolds on the finish. (Jul 2012)"
86 points Wine Spectator: "[$15 list] Plump, forward style, with plantain, heather and white peach notes and an open-knit finish. Drink now. (2012)"
Producer notes: "A powerful nose of guava, lime zest and ripe pear braced by honeysuckle and orange blossoms. A juicy palate with opulent passion-fruit, following through from the nose and finishing off with tart grapefruit characteristics. The refreshing acidity is perfectly counteracted by a creamy mid palate and subtle oak-derived spice. The 2011 vintage is a more fruit-driven style that is fresher & drier comparing to the 2010 vintage. A delightfully accessible wine that is mouth-wateringly moreish. Food Suggestions: Partner with shellfish; grilled tuna; grilled sardines; lemon and herb roast chicken; vegetable stews; Bobotie -- South African/Malay dish of baked savoury mince served with saffron rice; and biltong."

Producer notes: "Villiera was amongst the pioneers of (partially) wooded Chenin Blanc in the Cape, which results in a very integrated wine. The aim was to produce a rich, ripe wine which could handle a dimension of oak and would improve over an extended period.
