WHWC Staff Notes: "The Bibich is my current darling from the Balkan Peninsula. This wine hails from Croatia, specifically the northern Dalmatian coast. It is a blend of three varietals (Babic, Plavina, and Lasin) that all have roots to the original Zinfandel, which they call Plavac (plah-vache) in that neck of the woods. This wine reminds me of a traditional Rioja, full of damp earth, leather and dill. This makes sense because Bibich ages this wine in American oak, the same wood they use in traditional wines from Rioja. From the glass, I picked up cherry and fresh plum fruit with a lot of leather, spice, hints of damp earth and herbs. The R6 is very food-friendly with an alcohol level of 13.3% and fresh lip smacking acidity. Lamb would be my personal choice, but this would be a very flexible wine that would work with vegetables, cheeses and most anything off the grill. Scoop 'em up and be surprised by this delicious Croatian wine." - Brently Dunivant

Producer notes: "Gekkeikan Plum Wine is different from standard umeshu (plum liqueur) which is typically made by adding plum fruit to shochu or other white liquor. Gekkeikan Plum Wine is made by a unique recipe utilizing select fermented plums which produce a refreshingly fruity fragrance and delicate taste."

Importer notes: "100% Malvazija (Malvasia). The Blanc is planted in the predominately flysch-rich white soil unique to Istria. The 2010 was then fermented in 100% stainless steel after 2-3 days on the skins resulting in a wonderfully fine-grained texture and straw yellow color. In further contrast to the coast, this is the rugged truffle ridden and forested terroir that results in an undeniable savory character that is kept in balance by lively acidity. Earthy enough to pair with hard cheeses, bright enough to highlight fresh green herbs, and a medium body that standsup to fish, it’s an ideal food wine for the nearby and perhaps more familiar Italian kitchen. Alcohol 12.8%."
