If you want proof that Dolcetto is not 'the Beaujolais of Italy,' pour yourself a glass of Anna Maria Abbona's Maioli, which is 100% Dolcetto. The wine is violet-tinged deep purple, a very inviting color; it smells of violets, Assam tealeaves, and blueberries; and it is a mouth-filling, deep, substantial wine to drink. 'Una bomba,' as they say in Italy, and an excellent food wine; it goes with many red meat dishes, grilled sausages, cheese... The fruit comes from very old vines planted in the '30s by Anna Maria's uncle. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel.

87 points Fine Wine Review: "...the wine is exactly as it is supposed to be. The nose features spiced red cherry aromas. The mouth is medium-weight with red cherries and violets, and some steeliness to the texture. This is a good everyday wine, to serve slightly cool. 12% stated alcohol. (Issue #135/136; 2012)"
Bouquet: delicate but well defined, vinous, berries. Taste: dry, velvety, slightly almond, full, well balanced. More earth than fruit, good juice for the Old World wine lovers.

Two Glasses, Gambero Rosso (2013).
Importer notes: "The goal of this wine, from vineyard to bottle, is to maximize freshness and produce an imminently drinkable wine. Maceration lasts for 6-8 days (compared to 3 weeks for the Barolo) and aging is for only 6 months in large barrels. This Nebbiolo d'Alba typically exhibits fruity aromas (peach and wild berries) and medium body, being ready to drink relatively young. It is more suited for casual summer meals. It is best enjoyed young, but will improve with a brief cellaring."

Producer notes: "A slightly effervescent, sweet red wine with low alcohol (5.5%), made from one of the most appealing aromatic grapes, the Malvasia di Schierano. It is characterized by a very unusual marriage of freshness, weight, and aromatic complexity. Wild red berry fruit is gloriously evident on the nose, along with fascinating hints of blossoms, particularly wisteria and iris. Served well chilled, it is ideal with any sweet or dessert as well as with fresh fruit and petits fours."

Producer notes: "Light but abundant bubbles with long lasting 'perlage'. Intense straw-yellow, nearly golden color. Aromatic, complex and intense. On the palate, sweet, pleasantly acidulous, with a long lingering flavor, round, bodied and velvety. An excellent dessert wine, it perfectly accompanies strawberries, cooked peaches filled with macaroons, jam tarts or hazelnut cakes."

Producer notes: "Arneis is a native varietal which produces a very fruity wine with hints of pears and apples. Its fragrance and flavor are also enhanced by the small amount of CO2 kept from the fermentation, which also helps to make up for the variety’s low acidity. Pairing suggestions: aperitif, fish, appetizers."
Not yet reviewed; 2010 vintage rated 93 points by Wine & Spirits: "Fresh scents of apple blossom honey and beeswax add to the almond richness of this arneis. It’s as smooth as a round riverstone, clean and fragrant. The finish is distinctly Piedmontese in its earthiness; to match braised chicken or a rich fish stew."

Importer notes: "This wine from Piedmont comes from a single vineyard named Majoli. The vineyard is planted in Ruche, an indigenous grape and a very rare variety. This is as authentically Italian as you can get and way more interesting than Chianti, at a very sensible price! Tasting notes: Nose of dark berries and underbrush. On the palate flavors of red berries with some chocolate and black berries. Very well balanced with good acidity and tannins in the finish. This is a very enjoyable, rare and different wine with its distinctive berryish aroma."

Importer notes: "Grown in Sergio's vineyards in the south of the Dogliani appellation, at between 350 and 450 meters (1,150 to 1,500 feet); limestoney soil, eastern exposure, very good white wine terroir. The fruit is picked in small boxes, then pressed and fermented in stainless steel. Half of the wine is put through ML to round out the acidity somewhat (the rest of this is used as base wine for Sergio's Alta Langa sparkling wine, and has excellent acidity), and the wine is aged in stainless steel, then bottled in the summer following the vintage. Fresh appley bright Chardonnay, very useful food wine."

Viticulture at Forteto della Luja goes beyond organic. The soils are worked by horse, fermentations occur naturally by way of the 'mother' yeast. Since 2003 the winery has been 100% solar powered -- the only of its kind in Piemonte. The 'Piasa San Maurizio' vineyard is where Brother and sister Giancarlo and Silvia's great grandfather planted vines some 90 years ago. Gianni produces his Moscato d'Asti following 'old-time' methods; the objective is fresh fruit and aromas that caress you enough to jump in the glass. This single-vineyard Moscato exudes generous aromatics of sage, elderflower, white peach and fresh melon, which complement a rich, vanilla midpalate with acidity that refreshes. Organic single-vineyard Moscato as you've never had.

Nascetta is an ancient Piemontese white varietal, with only a few plantings existing today. Sergio Germano is one of a handful of winemakers working with this varietal. It is a svelt, mineral-driven white vinified solely in stainless steel tanks. Beautiful herbaceous aromas of lime peel, thyme, sage and wet rocks. Its medium-bodied frame and fresh acidity highlight the soft lime fruit flavors with touches of mineral and herbs. A very special wine from one of the rising stars of Barolo.

The late Sheldon Wasserman said it all in his magnum opus (co-authored by wife Pauline) Italy's Noble Red Wines: "Bruno Giacosa is without question one of Italy’s -- make that the world’s finest winemakers." Although Il Maestro could make more money pulling up these Dolcetto vines planted in the storied Falletto vineyard in Barolo and replacing them with Nebbiolo, he simply thinks it's cool to make a Dolcetto from a great terroir! Like the Dolcetto Sorano di Treiso, this is a tad more "serious" than the non-vineyard-specific Dolcetto d'Alba with more pronounced minerality and structure.

Not yet reviewed; 2010 vintage rated 88 points by both Wine Advocate and International Wine Cellar, which wrote: "Pure aromas of lemon, apple and spring flowers. Fresh more than structured, with good density to its apple, lemon and mineral flavors. A supple, sweet arneis for drinking over the next 6 to 12 months. Finishes with very good persistence."
Producer notes: "Dark, straw-yellow colour. Intense, fine and elegantly fruity bouquet reminiscent of peach, apricot, citrus, fruit and acacia flowers. Fresh and fragrant flavour with soft plentifulness."

90 points Wine Spectator: "[$18 list] A strong graphite aroma signals this white, whose flavors evoke apple, pear and almond, with underlying citrusy acidity. Stays fresh, clean and long, featuring a mineral aftertaste. Drink now through 2014. 1,000 cases made. (2013)"
Producer notes: "The origins of this superb winery, set in Rovereto of Gavi, on the Piedmont’s Apennines, are very ancient: since 900 A.C. in the Annals of Republic of Genoa was mentioned a Benedectine settlement which was on the hills overloading the river Lemme. Gavi di Gavi Lugarara is 100% Cortese. Color: Straw-yellow with a greenish hue. Bouquet: Subtle, persistent, scent of green apples. Flavor: Slightly acid with an almond backtaste. Gastronomy: It goes well with starters, fish, shellfish, fish or shellfish first courses, but for its characteristics it goes well also with fried food and mushrooms."

89 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "(bottled in July, along with the 2009 Barbera and the 2008 Barolo): Medium bright red. Very primary aromas of black cherry, minerals, licorice, flowers and leather. Juicy and penetrating, with medicinal black cherry flavor intensified by strong acidity. 'Lighter than the 2009 dolcetto, and good for everyday drinking,' noted Maria-Teresa Mascarelo. This very pure wine grew on me. (Oct/Nov 2011)"

89 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2011 Dolcetto d’Alba is quite rich and textured in this vintage, but nevertheless has plenty of varietal character. This mouthfilling, juicy Dolcetto is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Blueberries, spices and licorice wrap around the intense finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014.
