The little town of Matelica is in the Marche region, just east of Umbria. This region produces fine, minerally wine from the Verdicchio grape. The acidity of this wine is what makes it so lively and distinctive, and so good with food. This wine is racy, vivid, and excellent with all kinds of seafood dishes. It is fermented and matured entirely in stainless steel (no oak) and does not undergo malolactic fermentation. Use it like you might use a Sauvignon Blanc, because Verdicchio has some of the same herbal aroma and flavor as Sauvignon. It is a great aperitif, too, with olives and toasted almonds.

88 points Ian D'Agata (International Wine Cellar): "(12.5% alcohol): Golden yellow. Musky aromas of pear skin, tangerine, almond paste and candied ginger. Rich and chewy but lively too, with tactile flavors of marzipan and deeper orchard fruits. Moderately long and easygoing on the sappy, gently spicy finish. (Mar/Apr 2013)"
86 points Robert Parker: "The dry, light straw-colored, medium-bodied 2011 Verdicchio exhibits notes of roasted nuts, white currants and lemon rind along with excellent concentration, freshness and a zesty finish. Drink it over the next several years. (Dec 2012)"

88 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "[$18 list] The 2008 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a tasty red. Dark fruit, leather, licorice and tobacco flow from this generous, plump Montepulciano. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. (Jun 2011)"
Producer notes: "Ruby-red in color, this wine is surprisingly concentrated. With silky tannins and layers of dark berry fruit and spices, this is a rich and aromatic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Full-bodied and firm, yet supple, it is ready to be enjoyed with hearty pasta dishes, roasted poultry or lamb, and slow cooked ribs. Alcohol 13.5%."
