Bastianich & Lynch (Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy): "One of the more hisotic Barolo estates and one of the larger landowners in the town of Barolo itself. Their traditionally styled Barolos are blended from a variety of cru sites. One of the house specialties is the occasional rerelease of older vintages culled from stocks set aside at the winery."

Sheldon & Pauline Wassermann: "Beautiful orange robe; typical seaweed aroma of an old Barolo; round and smooth, at or near its peak; fairly long finish. (1985)"
Bastianich & Lynch (Vino Italiano Buying Guide): "Founded in the 1700s, this is one of Barolo's standard-bearers and one of its larger landowners. The supertraditional Barolos (lots of acid and barnyard funk) are blended from a variety of vineyard sites and aged in large barrels. Borgogno has a veritable bottled history of Barolo, having preserved stocks of vintages such as 1952, '64, and '78--which you can actually find in the U.S. market. (2008)"
Gambero Rosso: "This winery has just celebrated its 250th anniversary. Purchase by a group led by Oscar Farinetti has given new drive to this label, which had however always kepts its renown. These wines, particularly the famous Barolo, have always been crafted in line with tradition and became famous above all for their longevity, as confirmed by our recent tasting from the 1982 vintage. But even older vintages are available at Eataly and the winery, stored for decades in underground cellars. Andrea Farinetti now runs the recently refurbished main premises and has every intention of sticking to the path of tradition. (2013)"

90 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The last pristine example of the ’64 Borgogno Barolo Riserva offered up a complex and fully mature nose of cherries, camphor, forest floor, tar, anise and a bit of bonfire in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and tarry, with lovely complexity, good focus and still a bit of untamed tannin to resolve perking up the long finish. Like many of the Borgognos from this era, this is not the most elegant rendition of Barolo, but it is deep, complex and has matured nicely into a wine that offers up the blossoming of bottle age and is a good example of the vintage. 2009-2020+. (Sep/Oct 2010)"

98 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2007 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted at this address. Deep, sensual layers of fruit flow from the glass as this full-throttle, intense Barolo reveals its profound, breathtaking personality. The 2007 shows tons of Ginestra nuance, but with extra dimensions to the fruit that literally covers every nook and cranny of the palate. Tasting this next to the 2006 is quite a comparison, as both wines are fabulous. Readers who can should be sure to own bottles of both. A side-by-side comparison is sure to be fascinating as the wines develop over the coming years. Astute readers will note the slight name change here, which is the result of new regulations that require the use of the historic vineyard name, in this case Ginestra, or a proprietary name. Call me nostalgic, but it is sad to see one of the iconic labels in Barolo disappear. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. (Feb 2011)"
95 points James Suckling: "Full bodied, with velvety tannins and milk chocolate, and nutmeg character, with hints of hazelnut. Balanced and attractive. Best after 2015. (5/6/11)"

97 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2004 Barolo Percristina sweeps across the palate with masses of silky, dense fruit framed by firm, yet almost impossibly elegant tannins. This is an utterly captivating Barolo for its sheer power, richness and opulence. Despite the wine’s size, there is plenty of detail and nuance to explore in this utterly sensual, captivating Percristina. Readers lucky enough to find the 2004 Percristina should not hesitate, it is superb! Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. (Feb 2010)"
97 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Good deep red. Knockout nose combines red fruits, rose petal, brown spices and camphor, with a slight medicinal reserve. Pure, silky and sweet, offering incredible subtle intensity of flavor. This coats every millimeter of the palate without leaving any impression of weight, thanks to a steely spine that gives it great energy and snap. Wonderfully juicy, imploded wine with a broad, suave, extremely long finish. The locals prize the 2001 version of this wine (rated 95+?), but I give the edge to this vintage for its sheer verve. (Nov/Dec 2009)"

95 points Wine Spectator: "Strawberry pie and cream aromas lead to a full-bodied palate. Very thick and powerful, with big, velvety tannins and masses of fruit. A blockbuster style. Best after 2013. 750 cases made. (7/31/09)"
93 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The estate’s 2005 Barolo Cicala is a transparent, mid-weight wine redolent of dark fruit, spices, minerals and licorice, all of which come together in the glass with superb elegance. Here the tannins are decidedly firmer and bigger than in the Colonello, even though the vineyards are just a few hundred meters apart! This powerful yet harmonious wine is simply radiant in its beauty. All that it needs is a little patience. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025. (Apr 2009)"
92 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "[$186/750ml list; the first vintage for this wine since 2001, as this vineyard was hailed on in 2004) Good full medium red. Wild aromas of redcurrant, black cherry, tar and leather; this smells tannic but the fruit element expands impressively as the wine opens in the glass. Then large-scaled and firm in the mouth, with powerful acidity currently suppressing the wine's sweetness. There's a boatload of fruit here, but today the wine's mineral and gamey elements dominate. In a very traditional style, and completely different from the Colonnello: more backward and more masculine (Conterno refers to it as "our rude boy"). The serious tannins build with air and currently cut off the wine's finishing fruit. (Nov/Dec 2009)"

Three Glasses, Gambero Rosso: "Barolo Cascina Francia 2004... has a generously spacious bouquet, combining austerity and fruit on the palate, and judiciously balancing the tannins with acidity to provide a flavoursome finish that reprises the aromas. (2009)"
97 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2004 Barolo Cascina Francia is an explosive wine that faithfully captures all of the promise it showed from barrel. This spectacularly rich, concentrated Barolo possesses striking perfume in its smoke, tar, spiced red fruits, licorice and flowers. The wine offers tremendous length and a finish that lasts forever. This is an especially dense, powerful Cascina Francia with a gorgeous core of perfumed sweet fruit that will require some time to fully emerge but is breathtakingly beautiful even at this early stage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2029. (Dec 2007)"
95 points Wine News: "Intense floral nose with earthy notes of mint and licorice. Rich flavors of mouthwatering strawberry and cherry, powerfully structured and neatly balanced with vibrant tannins. Closes on clean mineral note. Very impressive. Best after 2012. (Oct/Nov 2008)"
91-94 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Good full red. Reduced, musky nose dominated by pungent dried herbs. Then suave and firm on the palate but silky, with a distinctly sappy quality to the dark fruit, mineral, floral and graphite flavors. The cooler herbal note carries through in the mouth, giving this young wine real lift. Lush in texture without being really fat, with the very pure finishing flavors mounting impressively. (Nov/Dec 2007)"

97 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is sweet, perfumed and totally gorgeous in its round, sensual fruit. Silky, elegant tannins frame the long, harmonious finish. Stylistically the 2007 is most similar to the 2004, although it seems to have more exuberant, opulent fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2037. (Feb 2011)"
97 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Good deep red. Very ripe aromas of red cherry, black raspberry, rose petal and flint. Huge yet magically light on its feet, with Musigny-like flavors of red fruits, flowers and pungent minerals. Wonderfully sweet and deep wine with great sap and floral lift; I find this considerably less medicinal than the normale Very much like a great Burgundy but with even more energy. The alcohol here is about 14% and the pH is 3.45. (Nov/Dec 2009)"

4 stars (Highly Recommended), 17.5/20 points Decanter: "Pretty blueberry, black cherry, jam and liquorice on the nose. Slightly earthy palate with a good structure of natural acidity and tannins at the end. It has a delicate tar and liquorice finish. Elegant. Drink: 2012-2017. Alc: 14%. (Apr 2012)"
John Gilman (View From the Cellar) on Giacosa's Barbaresco Santa Stefano di Nieve: "Bruno Giacosa’s Santa Stefano is perhaps his most famous and highly sought after bottling of Barbaresco. The Giacosa cellars are located in the northeastern Barbaresco town of Nieve, and their name is intimately associated with that of village’s most famous vineyard, Santa Stefano. However the entirety of this eight and a half hectare vineyard is owned by the Castello di Nieve, who are fine Barbaresco producers in their own right, and Bruno Giacosa has always made this wine from purchased grapes. The two producers have had a long-term contract for Bruno Giacosa to purchase grapes from Santa Stefano since the early 1960s. Castello di Nieve have always been content to sell off some of their grape production to Signore Giacosa, and no doubt the association of the name of Giacosa with Santa Stefano has helped to highlight the quality of this vineyard. This was the first vineyard that Bruno Giacosa decided to bottle on its own in 1964, and for that reason it occupies a very important place in the history of Barbaresco. The commune of Nieve is known for producing the most powerful and broadshouldered examples of Barbaresco in the region, with the soils here a bit denser and containing more clay than next door in the commune of Barbaresco itself. Aldo Vacca notes that soil of Santa Stefano shares the deep vein of limestone that is found in the ridge that contains Asili and Rabajà, but with more clay and calcium, so that the wines are more powerful and a bit more coarse and tannic out of the blocks. (Jan/Feb 2007)"

96 points Wine Spectator: "[$300 list] An elegant, fruity style, boasting raspberry, cherry and floral aromas and flavors. This is pure and delicate for the commune, with fine intensity, finesse and depth. The tannins mesh beautifully with the wine's silky texture, ending with an excellent finish. Just surprisingly open and approachable. Best from 2014 through 2032. 1,500 cases made. (12/15/11)"
95 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Good deep red. Perfumed, complex nose melds plum, red cherry, mocha, tobacco, wild herbs and spices. Sweet, silky and seamless, with almost painful intensity to its fruit if not yet as complex in the mouth as on the nose. Healthy acidity accentuates the wine's perfume. Finishes with very suave tannins and outstanding floral persistence. Said Dante Scaglione: 'I thought 2007 in Serralunga would be great from the moment of the harvest.' (Oct/Nov 2011)"
94+ points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2007 Barolo Falletto is an overachieving wine, even at this high level. The bouquet has a level of delineation, sweetness, inner perfume and nuance generally only found in Giacosa’s Red Label Riservas. The Falletto impresses for the intensity of its dark fruit and superb overall balance. The extroverted personality of the vintage is quite evident, especially as the wine sits in the glass. Menthol, flowers and licorice add the final notes of complexity on the finish. This is an especially racy Barolo from Bruno Giacosa, but the trademark elegance is there. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032. (Feb 2011)"
94 points James Suckling: "Dried strawberries, with hints of flowers. Full bodied, with clean fruit and polished tannins. Very fruity. Need a couple of years to soften. Reminds me of the 1997. (5/6/11)"

94 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2003 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto is a fascinating wine. It is classic Giacosa, with a lovely core of sweet roses, raspberries, licorice and menthol that is currently hiding under an imposing wall of tannins. It is also a wine of contrasts, at times open and accessible, at others brooding and shut down. As it sits in the glass the fruit gradually emerges to fill out the wine’s structure. It had only improved when I re-tasted it several days after first opening the bottle. That said, it will require further cellaring to soften the tannins, as the wine has shut down considerably since bottling. Made from the heart of the Falletto vineyard, it clearly benefits from the age of the vines in these selected plots. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2023. (Oct 2007)"
