Paul Strang (South-West France: The Wines and Winemakers): "The Barré family has been growing vines at Viella since 1850, and Didier represents the sixth generation... His roguish and teasing manner conceals a deep seriousness for his wines, which are regularly cited as among the best of the region. The vineyard covers about 24 hectares, partly on a pebbly-clay plateau to the west of the village and partly on a south-eastern slope over the east where Didier grows his grapes for pacherenc. Some of his vines go back 100 years."
The cuvee "Vitis MCM" is made with 100% Tannat harvested from vines planted in 1900 and aged in 80% new oak barrels.

45% Syrah, 45% Grenache, 10% Carignan.
Not yet reviewed; 2008 vintage rated 94 points by Wine Spectator: "This ripe, rich and powerful red has a deep well of dark fruit and spice flavors that are supported by firm tannins and plenty of fresh acidity. The finish shows raspberry ganache and cocoa powder, with hints of pepper. Drink now through 2020. 500 cases made."

91-92 points David Schildknecht (Wine Advocate): "A blend of Carignan and Syrah with smaller amounts of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, the red 2007 Le Soula -- tasted assembled from tank -- practically throws punches from the glass, with powerful rosemary, fennel, juniper berry, and distilled-strength blueberries and blackberries. Far more refined in tannins than its 2006 counterpart, but no less dynamic and startlingly refreshing (indeed, little less so than the white!) this offers deep meaty and mineral dimensions along with palate-staining bitter blue and black fruits and resinous herbs. In its assertive, brisk way, this striking wine should be fascinating to work with and worth following for at least 3-5 years. (Jun 2009)"
16.5/20 points Michael Edwards (The World of Fine Wine): "(13% ABV) Very good, even ripe color: solid, constant nose of red/black fruit, very helathy and deep. Sleeping a little on the palate but with plenty of latent, potentially rich, and durable flavors. (Issue #33; 2011)"
41% Syrah, 40% Carignan, 13% Grenache Noir, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon.

92 points David Schildknecht (Wine Advocate): "Named for the number of the French Department Pyrenees-Orientales, and designed to provide instant gratification, Bernstein’s tank-raised 2007 Cotes du Roussillon Villages 66 combines Grenache with 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan. Rich aromas and flavors of chocolate-covered black raspberries and blackberries once again dominate the luscious, fat, forward cuvee, but there is a striking note of wet stone in the finish and a wreathing of resinous scrub and herbs (cedar, rosemary), dimensions less distinctly present in the 2005. Here too, despite elevated alcohol, the wine is a complete lip-smacker and not the least burdened by heat or roughness. And while intended for early consumption, I recently turned up bottles of the 2005 vintage about which I enthused in issues 173 and 178 and found them still delicious, so 2-3 years’ aging is clearly unproblematic. (Jun 2009)"
92 points Rhone Report: "[$20 list] A tank aged blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Carignan, the 2007 Mas de la Deveze Cotes du Roussillon Villages '66' is a full-bore, hedonistically styled Roussillon that boasts thick, decadent aromas of black licorice, meat juice, toasted walnuts, roasted Provencal herbs, and asphalt. Despite the overall rich, voluptuous feel here, this stays gorgeously fresh and lively, showing a full-bodied, rich texture that avoids being heavy, impressive balance, and a clean, classically styled finish. Named after the French Pyrenees-Orientales department number (66), this thrill ride of a wine won't be for everyone, yet is a unique, fleshy, and oh so well done Roussillon that will drink beautifully for 3-5 years. (Mar 2012)"

Pellehaut, from the Roman "pila haut" (high point), is owned by the Béraut family. Gaston Béraut oversees the domaine, which also includes cattle, wheat and sunflowers. One son, Martin, is the vineyard manager, commonly found between the vines. The other, Mathieu, is the winemaker. Mathieu studied under Yves Grassa at nearby Château de Tariquet, as well as at Château Beycheville in Bordeaux and, during one harvest in the nineties, was Jim Clendenon' right-hand man at Au Bon Climat in Southern California. Ampelomeryx is a blend of Chardonnay and Petit Manseng, fermented and aged in new oak.
