Denis Alary, according to La Revue du Vin de France's "Le Classement des Meilleurs Vins de France," "produces serious and solid wines...possessing an undeniable charm." The La Gerbaude, from an eponymous parcel within the Cairanne AOC, is a ripe, round, plummy affair made from 75% Grenache, 15% Carignan and 15% Syrah. This is one of those terrific Southern Rhônes you can quaff all day long, with or without food, while wallowing in its seductive, lavender-inflected perfume and lush, opulent texture.

91 points Wine Spectator: "Inviting, boasting aromas and flavors of Lapsang souchong tea, warm fig sauce and crushed plum and currant fruit are all supported by a racy prominent graphite note. Lightly firm, but with the flesh and concentration to offset that. Drink now through 2013. 1,666 cases made. (10/15/10)"

92 points Wine Spectator: "This is on the red fruit side of the spectrum, with cherry, currant and pomegranate notes, but they're well-stitched, with nicely grippy tobacco, mineral and spice notes that add length on the finish. Well-knit for the vintage. Best from 2012 through 2020. 600 cases imported. (2/28/11)"
92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Vivid red. An exotically perfumed bouquet displays cinnamon-accented red berries and cherry, with a sexy floral overtone. Spicy and incisive on the palate, offering sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and a hint of baking spices. The spicy notes linger on a long, silky finish. Showing lots of complexity right now but this is also balanced to age. (Mar/Apr 2011)"
92 points Rhone Report: "One of the top wines in a challenging vintage and showing even better than a year ago, the 2008 Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf-du-Pape is perfumed and complex, possessing loads of black cherry, garrigue, licorice, lavender, peppered steak, and olive notes, medium body, perfect balance, and an overall savory, clean, fresh profile. There's good tannin and structure here, and this should continue to shine for another decade. Don.t let the vintage scare you off as this is an outstanding wine that will put a smile on anyone.s face. (Sep 2011)"
90 points Robert Parker: "[$75 list] The 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape is a sexy, medium to full-bodied effort with far more depth, richness and seductive powers than most Chateauneuf du Papes in this vintage. A classic blend of 85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Mourvedre, Syrah and Vaccarese has resulted in a deep plum/ruby-hued 2008 displaying loads of kirsch, pepper and licorice notes. The fruit is sweet, the tannins silky and the wine very seductive and evolved. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. (Oct 2010)"

94 points Wine Spectator: "[$240 list] This is suave, with a smoldering tobacco note running from start to finish, while truffle, cocoa, braised fig and warm black currant confiture notes fill in the remaining space. Dense, but very silky along the edges, with remarkable harmony for the vintage. Drink now through 2022. (10/15/11)"
93 points Rhone Report: "Gorgeously complex and nuanced, with an already approachable, open feel, the 2008 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Crozes-Hermitage is loaded with bright, fresh aromas of smoked blackberries, white pepper, cigar, wild herbs, and hints of bacon fat. This flows beautifully to a medium to full-bodied Hermitage that has a light, lifted texture, juicy acidity, and a clean, focused finish. Very classy and elegant, it shines for its balance, polish, and length. Beautiful now, it will continue to drink beautifully for 12-15 years. (Mar 2012)"

93 points Wine Spectator: "[$98 list] Dense, with a impressive tannic coating to the chestnut, tobacco, pastis, mulled currant and blackberry fruit flavors. There's a smoldering charcoal note on the finish, with the grip nicely integrated. You'd never guess this as a 2008. A terrific effort for the vintage. Best from 2012 through 2022. 163 cases imported. (10/15/11)"
92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "[$98 list] Deep ruby. A complex bouquet offers raspberry, cherry pit, violet and spice cake, with an intense mineral quality. Deeper, darker fruits on the palate, along with suggestions of allspice and licorice pastille. Shows fine-grained tannins and tangy mineral spine, with a suave blend of richness and vivacity. The very persistent finish is taut and focused, with lingering licorice and spice nuances. (Jan/Feb 2011)"

94 points Robert Parker: "Another shocker in the best sense is the 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous. As I wrote last year, this is one of the most complex and concentrated wines of the vintage. An extraordinary perfume of white chocolate, roasted Provencal herbs, lavender, licorice, black cherries and sweet black currants is followed by a broad, expansively flavored wine with a superb full-bodied texture, terrific purity and a 40+ second finish. In fact, the tannins are such that 1-2 years of bottle age may be beneficial. This 2008 should evolve for 15 years. It is almost impossible to believe that something like this could have been achieved in this vintage. (Oct 2010)"
93 points Rhone Report: "[$105 list] A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Vaccarese, the 2008 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous is silky and elegant, especially when compared to the Deus-Ex Machina.s brawny profile. Subtle licorice, meat, and underbrush notes follow deep red and black fruits on the nose. These lead to a structured, medium to full bodied wine that.s beautifully balanced, textured and long. This is drinkable now but given the balance and solid underlying structure, should easily last for 10 to 12 years. Note, this bottle had been open for a day prior to tasting. (Aug 2010)"

92 points Rhone Report: "Enjoyed over dinner and continuing to drink brilliantly and show the class of the producer, the 2008 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is loaded with sweet kirsch and blackberry liqueur, roasted meats, spice-box, and licorice-driven aromatics, medium to full-bodied, and a seamless, upfront, and yet focused and pure texture. It is a beauty that will continue to drink well through 2018. Do not let the vintage scare you away from this wine and while it won't be incredibly long lived, it delivers loads of pleasure in an 'oh so drinkable' package. (Sep 2012)"
90 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Full red. Muskier and more perfumed than the previous wine, displaying potent red and dark berry scents and a hint of anise. Spicy and broad, with sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors and a firm mineral spine. Finishes with very good clarity and persistent spice and floral nuances. (Jan/Feb 2010)"

89-91 points Robert Parker: "There are only 125 cases of the 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape, an impressive effort for the vintage. Its dark ruby/purple color is followed by abundant aromas of kirsch, lavender, licorice, and spice. Full-bodied with surprising density and richness, it should drink nicely for at least 7-8 years. (Oct 2009)"

91 points Wine Spectator: "Very rich, with velvety layers of kirsch, blackberry and plum sauce offset by graphite, fruitcake and melted licorice notes. Long and rich through the finish, with buried acidity allowing the dark fruit to play out. Impressive for the vintage. Drink now through 2021. 250 cases imported. (11/15/10)"
90 points Rhone Report: "[$40 list] Very ripe and opulent for the vintage, the 2008 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Girard is more ripe and round than the traditional cuvee, offering smoky dark fruits, licorice, lavender, and graphite aromatics. The wine is medium bodied with loads of sweet fruit, a round, soft texture and a clean, long finish. This comes across as modern in style at first but continues to open up and show more Southern Rhône Character with air. Outstanding and it should drink well over the following 10 to 12 years. Tasted twice. (Aug 2010)"
