Deep ruby red color. An earthy, spicy and fruity Loire Valley Cabernet Franc. Black pepper, mincemeat, blueberries, black currants, bay leaf and thyme, violets. A bold wine with good acidity. A very good match with smoked pork tenderloin.
WHWC Staff notes: "This intriguing little number recently appeared on our shelf, and since I had not tried it before I bought a bottle to have with a dinner of risotto with parmesan, sausage, chicken, peas, carrots, both green and red bell pepper, onion and basil. Talk about a match made in heaven! This wine from the French Loire region of Chinon is 100% Cabernet Franc, and I was thrilled to find it accurate to a "T." The fruit profile is a quick hit of bright tart red cherry followed by a deeper, darker, blue and black fruit core. Underneath the fruit... bell pepper, forest minerality, eucalyptus, flowers and zesty peppercorn all mingle with the traditional Chinon herbaceousness and vegetation. Tannins and acidity are balanced but there was no discernable oak on the nose or palate. Overall, a wine of great complexity and infinite food pairing possibilities for a reasonable price... you can't go wrong!." -Casey Carmichael

From 100% Cabernet Franc. Very deep appearance with concentrated black fruits on the nose. The palate is very pure, with a focused, juicy acidity running throughout. There is some concentration of flavor, but the overall impression is of deftness and freshness. With its lively, primary fruit this is delicious now, but could be expected to age over the next decade as it loses its red fruit character and takes on a more wild and gamey profile.

Nicolas Grosbois made wine all over the world -- Oregon, Chile, Australia, New Zealand as well as closer to home in Minervois, before returning to the family domaine and taking over in 2006. In 2007, he stopped using herbicides and by 2008 was completely organic. Despite the amount of time spent in the brave New World, Nicolas is very committed to making wine in what he calls the ‘classic’ way. This means steering away from lots of extraction, preferring a much slower, gentler maceration between skins and juice, and no new oak. The results are stupendous. Dense, inky plum and blackberry fruit in a slinky, silky body. This wine has real stuffing and yet is utterly pliable.

Nicolas Grobois is one of the up and coming stars in Chinon. The Grosbois family produces 4 cuvées, vinified by geographic parcel. The Gabare cuvée comes from a south-facing lower terrace of the Vienne river near Panzoult and a has a sandy, pebbly, clay soil. Aged for 9 months, it the lightest and most feminine of his cuvées. It has supple, attractive primary red fruit with a stony undertone. 100% Cabernet Franc. Age of vines: 35 years old.

88 points Robert Parker: "[$21 list] The 2011 Chinon Les Terrasses (100% Cabernet Franc) is medium-bodied and stylish. Lambert is playing a dangerous game by using no SO2, but these bottles were very sound and, hopefully, anyone trying them will find the same crunchy fruit as I did, with terrific elegance and lots of red and black fruits with a floral undertone. (Dec 2012)"

89 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "Gérard Morin makes one of the finest examples of Sancerre rouge that I am familiar with and his 2008 is a really classy bottle of pinot noir. What sets Monsieur Morin’s Sancerre rouge ahead of many of his neighbors’ examples is the beautiful purity of vibrant red fruit coupled to chalky soil tones and no signs of herbaceous or peppery overtones. The nose on the 2008 is really lovely, as it jumps from the glass in a blaze of strawberries, cherries, roses, a hint of spiced meats and a beautiful base of chalky limestone. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish, pure and tangy, with really lovely focus and balance, moderate tannins, tangy acids and great length and grip on the complex and very fresh finish. A fine, fine bottle of Sancerre rouge. 2010-2020+. (Jan/Feb 2011)"

Producer notes: "It is the plot called Tire-savatte which produces this blend, the slopes of which dominate the Thouet valley and the village of Saumoussay. This very concentrated vintage will seduce you by its powerful, aromatic expression blending red macerated fruits with liquorice, vanilla and grilled nuances. Born from a strict selection of mature grapes, this more autumnal vintage reflects all the concentration of the Cabernet Franc vine on the Saumurois soil. All care is given to these grapes, giving it a generous and powerful flavor expressing mellow tannins. Best to decant before serving at room temperature (18-20°C), to allow for its full aromas and opulent structure to best complement red meats, big game birds and chocolate cake. Drink: now-2021."

This 45-acre Loire domaine dates from the 12th century. There are 45 acres under vine, 80% in Sauvignon Blanc for Sancerre blanc, and 20% in Pinot Noir for Sancerre rouge and rosé. The eponymous Roger, who works with his sons Eric and Philippe, uses a gentle pneumatic press and vinifies in temperature-controlled stainless steel to assure freshness. Oak is not part of his vocabulary. The resulting wines--white, rosé and red--are textbook.

Not yet reviewed; 2008 vintage rated 88 points by Wine Advocate: "The Reverdy 2008 Sancerre Rouge Terre de Maimbray -- from fruit grown on pure white chalk; subjected to greater selectivity, cold soak, and longer fermentation; and rendered entirely in barrel -- suggests a tart blackberry and red currant melange suffused with salt and chalk, and a sense of chewy fruit skin complimented by glyceral richness. It will probably be worth following for a couple more years."

90 points David Schildknecht (Wine Advocate): "[$36 list] The generic Vacheron 2010 Sancerre rouge -- from around half each of flint and Kimmeridgian soils, as reflects the domaine’s aggregate constitution -- was raised one third in wooden upright, the rest in older barrique, and bottled already in August, 2011. Dark cherry and plum as well as the piquancy of their pits are already intimated on the nose, along with sweet suggestions of buddleia and rose perfume. 'We’re starting to take great pains to extract very gently and obtain the supplest sorts of tannins in our Pinots,' remarks Jean-Laurent Vacheron. The pit fruits then come to the palate accompanied by nutty, smoky inflections and mouthwatering veal stock-like savor, all of which -- like this wine’s charming florality -- persist in a persistent, faintly and not at all unattractively grainy finish. What a triumph this represents for its vintage, not to mention a vindication of the Vacherons’ approach! Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years. (Jun 2012)"
