This is quite ripe, indeed to the extent of having mocha and cassis aromas that manage to retain a reasonable sense of freshness. The suave, round and delicious middle weight flavors are quite textured as here too there is ample dry extract that renders the firm tannins almost invisible on the mouth coating yet slightly bitter finish where a hint of wood toast surfaces. In contrast to the villages Chambolle however, there appears to be enough extract present to allow the tannins to round out and thus my score offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink: 2016+. This top cuvée from the brothers Jean-Pierre and Michel Auvigue drinks like grand cru Burgundy from the Côte d'Or, but at a fraction of the price. We recently popped one of these at a dinner party and haven't stopped recommending it since. Jean-Pierre and Michel are third generation proprietors at this property right in the heart of the Mâconnais. Robert Parker notes that "Their wines...are among the top half-dozen wines produced in the region... they are favorites at [many] important restaurants in France." The rich nose of tropical fruit, floral and lemon hints with toasted notes leads to surprisingly vibrant structure in the mouth, excellent balance and very good length. We appreciate the fresh-coated roundness and richness that brings complexity to this great wine of gastronomy. An ideal companion to Fettuccini Alfredo, roasted chicken with French fries, or foie gras.

Surely there are several examples of Côte de Nuits Villages from Brochon that are more serious wines than even the best examples from Maranges, so why has the AOC not deigned to grant this village its own appellation? In any case, the 2009 Côte de Nuits Villages from Monsieur Bachelet is really superb, with the inherent elegance of the vintage very much in evidence here on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is a lovely mélange of cassis, grilled meats, espresso, Gevrey-like black minerality and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very long, with suave tannins, lovely focus and excellent length and grip on the finish. Classy juice. 2014-2035. (Nov/Dec 2010)"

90 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2009 Chambolle villages from Madame Barthod is a dynamite example of the vintage and a wine that I will certainly be trying to add to my own cellar. The nose is deep, pure and classic, as it jumps from the glass in a lovely mix of red and black cherries, fresh herb tones, raw cocoa, lovely soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and sappy at the core, with a great signature of soil, fine-grained tannins, tangy acids and excellent length and grip on the classy finish. I would tuck this lovely AC away for four or five years to let its secondary layers of complexity emerge, but it is going to be hard not to drink early on, as it is so beautifully balanced that its moderate tannins are not going to put up much resistance. The bouquet is deep, pure and really vibrant, as it soars from the glass in a sappy mélange of plums, black cherries, raw cocoa, woodsmoke, intense violets and a stunningly complex base of soil. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and very soil-driven, with the great core of fruit wrapped in beautiful terroir. The finish is very, very long, with ripe tannins, excellent focus and grip and beautiful, nascent complexity on the backend. A beautiful bottle of wine that will richly deserve six or seven years of bottle age before broaching, just to let it really cut loose on the nose and palate. 2016-2040. (Nov/Dec 2010)"

Not yet reviewed; Fine Wine Review on the 2008 vintage: "This is a producer who does not have high-profile vineyards, but delivers excellent quality for what he has and at moderate prices. Bouvier’s Bourgogne, En Montre Cul is from a well-known vineyard in Couchey, at the northern end of the Côte des Nuits. It is floral in the nose and shows light, floral red fruit flavors in the mouth. It is a prime example of how delightful a simple Bourgogne can be. I’d drink over the next 6-8 years."
