97 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Madrona Ranch opens with an incredibly expressive bouquet. Espresso, mocha and licorice meld into dark red fruit and sweet exotic spices in this superb wine. The 2008 is an extraordinarily polished, refined wine for the vintage. Sweet spiced and floral notes reappear to round out the finish. The relatively high percentage of Cabernet Franc (37%) comes through in spades here. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. (Dec 2011)"
94 points Wine Spectator: "Ultrarich and gutsy, nuzzling up to syrupy, this is a chewy, extracted style that extends the flavors to kirsch, black licorice, blackberry jam, espresso, hazelnut and toffee. Ends with chewy, grainy tannins that give the flavors traction. Drink now through 2026. 350 cases made. (5/1/13)"

Unique blend of 9 different varietals. Loaded with handsome fruit and delivers big-time flavor. 26% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Mourvedre, 9% Grenache, 7% Zinfandel, 5% Touriga Nacional, 5% Pinot Noir, 5% Cinsault, and 4% Roussanne.
WHWC Staff Notes: "This is a favorite winery I have been following for the past 13 years. Located in the far west side of Paso Robles, I first became aware of Adelaida when the winemaker at Justin tipped me off to them. That was just prior to him making the famed Justin Isosceles that was ranked as Wine Spectator's #5 wine of the year. As fate would have it, he left Justin that year to take over winemaking at Adelaida. The School House brand is Adelaida's second label. This is a perfect example of what a multi-varietal blend with some bottle age should taste like. It consists of Syrah 26%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Mourvedre 19%, Grenache 9%, Zinfandel 7%, and equal parts Touriga Nacional, Pinot Noir, Cinsault, and Roussanne. It's just the right amount of jamminess with the alcohol checking in at 14.9%. The wine is full-bodied and all of the nine varietals mesh well together. This bottle would go well with pizza, pasta with a red meat sauce or even a burger. It's drinking really well right now and is in a style that well represents the west side of Paso Robles." - Mark Menchyk

Denis Alary, according to La Revue du Vin de France's "Le Classement des Meilleurs Vins de France," "produces serious and solid wines...possessing an undeniable charm." The La Gerbaude, from an eponymous parcel within the Cairanne AOC, is a ripe, round, plummy affair made from 75% Grenache, 15% Carignan and 15% Syrah. This is one of those terrific Southern Rhônes you can quaff all day long, with or without food, while wallowing in its seductive, lavender-inflected perfume and lush, opulent texture.

96+ points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Reva (Syrah) is stunningly beautiful. This is a relatively delicate, feminine Reva that impresses for its length, balance and utter purity of fruit. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and silky, saline notes wrap around the expressive fruit on the long, polished finish. A hint of truffles adds to the wine’s sensual, totally beguiling personality. In 2008, the Reva is drop-dead gorgeous. Readers should note that, in this vintage, there is no Lorraine or Seymour’s, so the 2008 is a 'super-Reva!' Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. (Aug 2012)"
95-96 points James Suckling: "Love the spice, game and dark berries, yet reserved and austere. Shows form and firmness. Long and beautiful. Should be in market in November 2012. (5/25/12)"
93-96 points Rhone Report: "The 2008 Alban Vineyards Syrah Reva Alban Estate Vineyard was the only Syrah produced in '08. Showing a lively, more energetic profile than the more heavy weight '06 and '07, it still doesn.t lack for structure, depth, or complexity. Showing loads of tapenade, lavender, blood, and black fruits, medium to full-body, and a beautifully focused, pure texture and finish, this elegant Syrah should still benefit from short term cellaring once released. I love the vibrancy here, and it will be interesting to see how this shows from bottle. (Dec 2011)"
94 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(raised in French oak, 80% of it new, for 44 months; 15.1% alcohol): Glass-staining purple. Sexy smoke- and spice-accented aromas of candied black and blue fruits and potpourri, with a suggestion of black pepper building with air. Lush and expansive on the palate, offering deeply pitched but lively cassis and blueberry flavors and a suave floral pastille nuance. The spicy note comes back strong on the finish, which shows only a hint of tannins. (Nov/Dec 2012)"

87 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$20 list] A little brusque in texture, with some tartness, but there’s a lot of richness. Shows complex flavors of blackberries, cherries, black currants, cola, dark bitter chocolate, cedar and spices, with a pleasant minerality, and the finish is bone dry. Brisk tannins make it an ideal companion to roasted meats and hard cheeses. (12/31/10)"
Producer notes: "The 2008 shows an enticing nose of black cherry and cassis and hints of eucalpytus and cocoa. In the glass, this wine delivers much more than what one might expect for a Cab so modestly priced, revealing rich flavors of cherry, chocolate and plum enveloped by soft tannins."

87 points Rhone Report: "[$20/750ml list] Co-fermented with a small portion of Viognier and Grenache (85% Syrah, 13% Grenache, 2% Viognier) and aged in 25% new French oak for 17 months, the 2008 Alexander Valley Vineyards Syrah is a straight forward, very enjoyable Syrah that shows loads of blackberry, floral, game, and spice aromas, a medium-bodied, fresh, and balanced palate, and solid length on the finish. This improves in the glass over the evening and will be very versatile on the dinner table. A touch of dry tannin has me pulling in the drink window, but it should nevertheless show well for 4-5 years. (Dec 2011)"
86 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "[$20/750ml list] Mildly woodsy and showing touches of wet earth and roasted meat in the nose, this full-bodied young wine follows with solid, if somewhat rustic, flavors that stay in step. It is not an especially fruity wine, yet there is a core of dark berries at its heart, and, if a bit rough for solo sipping, it will do the job in washing down hunks of beef. (Mar 2012)"
86 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$20/750ml list] Give a good shot of air in a decanter to this Syrah before you pour it. Fresh out of the bottle, it’s all candied cherry and black raspberry fruit. Oxygen will help soften it and bring out earthy, herbal complexities. Alcohol 14.0%. (May 2011)"
Producer notes: "85% Syrah, 13% Grenache, 2% Viognier. Aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and a slight floral note of violets followed by traditional flavors of blackberry jam, black cherry and hints of nutmeg, cumin and cardamom fill the glass. The 2008 is smooth and mellow now but AVV Syrah typically improves in the bottle, so lay a few down and try them in a year or two. Food Pairing: Grilled meats, slow braises, and cuisine with a Mediterranean accent are great matches. This is a versatile wine and works in all seasons. Barrel aged 17 months in French oak (25% new). Alcohol 14%."

90 points and 'Top 100 Wine of 2011 (#60),' Wine Spectator: "[$20 list] This sleek, polished red offers juicy blackberry and black fruit flavors, backed by refined tannins and well-integrated acidity. Hard to stop sipping. Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Sangiovese. Drink now through 2020. (10/31/11)"
89 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "[$20 list] The 2008 Palazzo Della Torre is striking in this vintage. It shows remarkable harmony in a tense, mineral-infused expression of fruit. Hints of licorice, tobacco, mocha and spices develop in the glass, adding further complexity and nuance. All of the elements flow gracefully to a finish layered with the essence of crushed rocks and flowers. This is an absolutely delicious wine from Allegrini. Palazzo della Torre is made with a partial ripasso technique in which 30% of the fruit is dried Amarone-style, while the other 70% is picked and vinified conventionally. Once again, Palazzo della Torre is one of the very finest values in Italian wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. (Feb 2012)"

91 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Sangiovese shows plenty of varietal character in its expressive red cherries, licorice and tobacco but with Napa Valley warmth and shape. The wine’s volume and depth should allow it to drink beautifully for a number of years. This is an impressive California Sangiovese, something I can’t say too often. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$23/375ml list] Light brown and slightly translucent in color. Aromas lean toward raisin and prune, but there's orange zest and molasses on the bouquet as well. Bores straight ahead on the palate, with sweet flavors of burnt brown sugar, caramel and prune. Satisfying and balanced even if it's not overly complex. abv: 17%. (Apr 2012)"
90 points Peñín Guide: "(100% pedro ximenez) Colour: dark mahogany. Nose: complex, dried fruit, pattiserie, toasty, saline. Palate: sweet, rich, unctuous, powerful, fruity. (2011)"
Producer notes: "This sweet young wine is obtained through drying the Pedro Ximénez grapes on mats in the sun. Brilliant clear amber color. Clean, light and superbly stylish, it is a pure raisin wine that combines a full aroma with a pleasant fruitiness. Rich in dried fruit nuances and toasty hints of skins, with fresh overtones, rosemary honey. Unctuous palate. Alcohol 17%. Sugar 415 g/l. Food Pairing:
Nice partner for blue cheese, pastry and sweetmeats. It can also be served as a dessert itself or with ice or soda as a cooling delicious drink."

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Beautifully balanced, this offers the perfect expression of Washington State brightness and a Bordeaux-like herbal component. The tannins are fine and drying, and the wine is polished, with plenty of astringent, herbal flavors in the finish. Don’t look for big fruit here, but for a Euro style, this is a sure bet. (Feb 2011)"
Producer notes: "76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 5% Syrah, 3% Cabernet Franc. Vineyards: 45% Seven Hills, 41% Pepper Bridge, 8% Les Collines, 6% Goff. Integrated aromas of dark fruits and mint layer beautifully with notes of gravel and cedar. Full and generous flavors of black cherries and plums complement hints of mineral and cocoa powder. Gentle tannins support a supple, powerful mouthfeel. 14.1% alcohol."

87+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2008 Chambolle AC is quite good and surprisingly, my favorite wine in this range. The nose offers up classic Chambolle notes of red and black cherries, dark chocolate, lovely soil tones, woodsmoke and a judicious touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long and tangy, with solid complexity and good length and grip. A very respectable bottle of Chambolle villages. 2014-2030. (Mar/Apr 2010)"
Allen Meadows (Burghound): "his is also extremely fresh and airy with a pretty mélange of red and blue pinot fruit with similar floral notes that merge into vibrant, clean and pure middle weight flavors that are supported by mildly edgy structural elements on the short and slightly dry finish. Medium-bodied and elegant with sweet tannins and excellent fruit, it should drink nicely for up to a decade. 94 points and 'Cellar Selection,' Wine Enthusiast: "Doesn’t say so on the label, but this is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Atlas Peak area. Very dry and tannic, with an astringent lockdown, it’s functionally undrinkable now, but it does show the intensity of this mountainous region for Cabernet, with explosive blackberry, blueberry and black currant flavors. All indications are that it’s an ager. Hold until 2015, at the very least. (Apr 2012)"
93+ points Robert Parker: "[$98 list] More statuesque and compelling is the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Townsend Vineyard. Initially restrained, this dense ruby/purple-colored wine offers up notes of forest floor, blackberries and cassis along with a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and attractive elegance and purity. 97 points and 'Cellar Selection,' Wine Enthusiast: "Definitely on a top 10 list of Italian icons, Solaia affirms the massive potential of Italian winemaking, from vineyard to cantina to cellar and beyond. Superrich and polished, but never over the top, this gorgeous super Tuscan shows deep layers of chocolate, black cherry, rum cake and spice. The secret lies in its balance: Everything is in place, from intensity and complexity to persistency. (May 2012)"
93 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Solaia is richer and darker than the Tignanello, but it isn’t an appreciably more complex or complete wine. It shows gorgeous depth and textural richness to match an expressive core of blackberry jam, smoke, scorched earth, crushed rocks and cassis. This is a beautiful wine, but not as great as I had hoped. The 2008 Solaia is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in 100% new oak. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
