The delicious, intense and voluminous flavors enjoy a prominent effervescence that is almost foamy yet the bead is strikingly fine, all wrapped in a distinctly yeasty, dry and admirably complex finish that goes on and on. It's exuberant and youthful at the moment, its rich red-fruit flavors feeling sleekly voluptuous, although it's all held in place by its underlying chalkiness. The aromas persist with fragrance and length on the finish, and overall, this promises to develop well--in fact, it should be much more interesting when the primary fruit calms down, allowing a more mature complexity to develop. It was previously closely linked with Lanson and in 1949 it was taken over by the Nonancourt family. Since Laurent-Perrier bought Salon in 1989, Delamotte has functioned as Salon's second label. Delamotte owns five hectares at Le Mesnil and has access to Salon's vineyards during the years when no Salon is produced. Didier Dupond runs both firms with great sensitivity and enthusiasm. Delamotte purchases 75 per cent of its grapes, mostly from Premier cru villages."

The wide open and very pure nose delivers a fine mix of red currants, strawberries, cherries, a touch of coriander, incipient notes of bonfire, orange zest and a great base of stony minerality. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and rock solid at the core, with beautiful balance, tangy acids, moderate tannins and a very long, focused and complex finish. Admittedly, this is Corton, which is often one of the most transparent reds in the Côte de Beaune, but I get a strong signature of soil in the 2002 Gaunoux Renardes that is very exciting and often missing in many of the higher pedigree examples of this vintage that I have tasted in the last few years. 96+ points Robert Parker: "This appears to be one of the great efforts from Chateau Montelena, something I think I was correct about when I gave it an 'in the bottle' rating in 2006 of 95+. It is still an amazingly young wine that came from old vines on the famous St. George rootstock that did not require replanting because of the phylloxera epidemic that swept through Napa in the late 1980's and 1990's. Despite its lofty 14.4% alcohol (high by Montelena standards) and the overall flamboyance of the 2002 vintage, it needs another 4-6 years of cellaring. This young, classic Cabernet Sauvignon represents the quintessential traditional school of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It possesses an inky/blue/purple color in addition to a tight, but promising nose of black currants, crushed rocks, earth and spice. Rich, full-bodied, pure and brilliantly executed, with perfect harmony, this is a sensational yet forebodingly backward, youthful Cabernet Sauvignon that needs 4-6 years of cellaring and should keep another quarter of a century. Finishes with big, dusty, but rather suave tannins. This offers early accessibility but has the material and structure for extended aging. Still a bit youthfully tight, with a saline nuance. But this is suave, fresh and serious, and not overly sweet. Firmly structured, adult zinfandel for drinking over the next several years.
