A "grower Champagne" (aka "Farmer Fizz") from the same folks who make our best-selling non-vintage brut, Berthelot's Cuvée du Centenaire is produced only in exceptional vintages, such as 2004. This cuvée is a blend of approximately 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, grown in grand cru sites in and around Aÿ and in premier cru vineyards in Dizy, with an average vine age of 40 years. For a Champagne produced mostly from Chardonnay, it is unbelievably opulent, with a lush nose redolent of hazelnut, cashew, and fresh-from-the-oven brioche. In the mouth it is surprisingly rich, with flavors that evoke dried fruits such as apricot and white raisin, finishing with a blast of citrus zest. This is frighteningly close in quality to the luxury cuvées issued by the grandes marques but at about half the price and is not to be missed.

40% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier, 20% Chardonnay. From the coolest name for a town in the wine biz, Dizy. Many of you are familiar with this producer's "regular" brut, which is by far our best selling bubbly in the store, but this bottling is much less known for the simple reason it's never been imported here before. We talked the local importer into bring some in for us, so it's finally here. A serious, salmon colored rosé loaded with strawberry and cherry.

From the Jura region, 'Tant-Mieux' is a Poulsard-based sparkling wine, namely a Pétillant Naturel, meaning that fermentation was finished in the bottle without the addition of sugar. It has a dried cranberry color and a touch of cloudiness as the wine is unfiltered and was not disgorged. Aromas include dried tea leaves, orange rind and bright strawberries. On the palate, expressive strawberry notes dominate as hints of amaro, tea and a hints of sweetness round out the flavor profile. The fruit is ripe, but still reserved in an Old World fashion. Acidity is abundant and there is even a hint of coarseness to the wine giving it a balanced, but medium-weight texture. Throughout the nose and the palate there is a hint if ‘beery-ness’ to the wine as the wine finished fermentation in the bottle and the yeast remains.

Domaine Albert Boxler is a 300-year-old family estate in the small Alsace town of Niedermorschwihr, and is currently run by Albert’s 34-year-old grandson, Jean Boxler, who trained at France's top wine school, the University of Montpellier, and made his first vintage in 1995. The domaine’s 26 vineyard-acres include parts of the famed Grands Crus Sommerberg and Brand. Indeed, 80 percent of Boxler’s vines are Grand Cru. All grapes are grown organically, and about 5,000 cases of wine are produced annually. According to France magazine (Winter 2006/2007), "Boxler . . . crafts some of Alsace’s most exciting wines from grapes drawn entirely from its own . . . vineyards." This Cremant d'Alsace possesses a delicate nose of fresh flowers and bright fruit. On the palate, it has flavors of apple skin and brioche, with an elegant bubble and nutty aftertaste. Impeccably balanced.

Pinot Auxerrois 38%, Pinot Gris 35%, Pinot Noir 27%. Biodynamic farming and certified organic. Produced using the same method as Champagne. Aromas of peach and fig, with a whiff of eau de vie de framboise; quite powerful and structured on the palate with only the lightest dosage, this is an unusually ambitious effort.

2-3 stars Peter Liem, ChampagneGuide.net: "This edition of Le Cotet is 90 percent 2006, with the remainder coming from bottles of 2004 and 2002 that were disgorged and decanted into the blend, and about one-tenth of the 2006 portion was vinified in barrel. It's classic Le Cotet in profile, feeling racy and lively, its citrusy flavors quietly infused by chalky minerality. Thriving on its finesse, it demonstrates a lovely tension and energy from start to finish, and while it seems to indicate potential for further development, it's so inviting to drink now. The 2 g/l of dosage is perfectly judged. Last tasted: 2/10."

Wine Enthusiast: "Crisp, apple-flavored and touched by citrus, this is light and toasty. The finish is dry, fruity and fresh. Ready to drink. (Dec 2012)"
A blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Ugni Blanc. The Chardonnay imparts a depth and complexity for the overall balance while the Chenin Blanc lends citrus flavors and hints of honey for a creamy texture. Colombard's higher acidity provides structure and length as well as a pleasant minerality which is supplemented by the Ugni Blanc's fruit profile. Le Grande Courtage is the perfect balance of fruit, acidity and sweetness. It is a crisp, smooth and less yeasty sparkler which is versatile and very cuisine-friendly.
Tasting notes: A light bouquet with aromas of Granny Smith apples, honeysuckle, strawberry and toasted brioche. Perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and sweetness. Lingers nicely with a bit of Meyer lemon, honeydew and continuing apple finish. Great length, clean with a pleasant hint of yeast on the palate. An elegant sparkling wine with balanced acidity, fine bubbles and a light, crisp, refreshing finish.

Producer notes: "The appellation Bourgogne Mousseux Rouge was established in 1943. It recognized transforming all Burgundy wines into sparkling wines by using the traditional method. However, since the creation of the appellation Crémants de Bourgogne, it applies only to the red sparkling wines. The Parigot house has remained loyal to this tradition and creates sparkling red Burgundies from a strict selection of Pinot Noir. A long aging in the cellars brings it to full maturity. Its dark ruby colour announces a solid structure composed of fine, elegant tannins. Its unique effervescence enhances the traditional bouquet of Burgundy wine. Served chilled, the audacity of pairing it with the most ordinary dishes will surprise."

Producer notes: "The harmonious marriage of the two white grape varieties in Burgundy, Chardonnay and Aligoté, give this crémant its uniqueness and nobility. The Chardonnay, by far the majority, supplies it with all the traits of its character. The Aligoté gives it the gift of vivacity. Its robe, wheat-like in color, evokes freshness and delicateness. Its bewitching aromas are completed by enjoyable fruity notes. Well balanced, this cremant's vitality and youthfulness will know how to seduce the palate of amateur connoisseurs of cremant Blanc de Blancs."

Producer notes: "Founded in 1909 by Eugène Charmat, the inventor of the 'second fermentation in tank' process, the company which produces this high profile sparkling wine is dedicated to high quality wines. The flavor profile reveals apple, pear and a yeasty undertone all the way to the bold and refreshing lemon-crisp finish. It offers the characteristic food versatility that many are looking for in a sparkling wine or simply as an appetizing aperitif."

Producer notes: "Vinification: Ancestral Dioise Method. Blend of 75% Muscat and 25% Clairette. Clairette brings lightness and freshness and Muscat gives the wine its bouquet. After pressing, the juice is refrigerated and the half-fermented must is bottled. Fermentation continues in the bottle from the natural sugar in the grapes. After fermentation in bottle in air-conditioned cellar, the sediments are eliminated by riddling, then disgorgement takes place with neither decanting nor filtering. Carbonation is produced exclusively by fermentation. A party wine. Ideal for dessert and cocktail, suitable for aperitifs. Organic."

Importer notes: "An estate reflecting the image of an ever-changing Jura and family enterprise that was created in the early '40s by Désiré Rolet. A native vineyard consisting of 60 hectares distributed over the best hills of the Arbois and Côtes du Jura AOC vineyards, the Rolet Estate is the second largest winegrowing estate in the Jura. Tasting Notes: Pretty, pale color with green glints; fine bubbles that rise slowly yet with persistence. The nose is delicate and discrete, smelling of white flowers and hawthorn. The mouth has a solid finish with some vivacity, lacks bitterness, and is full-bodied, pleasant and delicate. This is an all-occasion wine and can be enjoyed as an aperitif, at the end of a meal or any time day or night. Chardonnay 54%, Savagnin 23%, Poulsard 23%."

This is France's oldest sparkling wine, created by the Benedictine Monks of the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire over 450 years ago -- more than 100 years before the first Champagne was created. Blanquette de Limoux can contain three grape varieties: Mauzac (which must constitute a minimum of 90% of the wine), Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. It has distinctive aromas of fresh cut grass and flavors of crisp apples.

David Schildknecht (Wine Advocate): "...finished with 5 grams of residual sugar, although Tissot does custom disgorgement and dosage for some of his U.S. clients -- displays a complex nose of toasted grains, yeast, Normandy apple cider, quince, smoky bacon, and lemon zest. With its residual sugar well-judged to support the richness of orchard fruits and nut oils on the palate, its persistent lemon, chalk, and salt notes help provide counterpoint. Stephane Tissot’s sparking cuvees of Chardonnay and Pinot remain among the finest traditional method sparklers for the money grown anywhere in the world."
Wine Enthusiast: "Made mainly from Chardonnay, this poised sparkling wine is deliciously crisp, packed with flavors of red apples and aromas of hedgerow flowers."
Wine Spectator: "Apple and beeswax aromas and flavors mingle with the bright acidity and rich mousse in this appealing crémant. Good length. Drink now."
