Denis Alary, according to La Revue du Vin de France's "Le Classement des Meilleurs Vins de France," "produces serious and solid wines...possessing an undeniable charm." The La Gerbaude, from an eponymous parcel within the Cairanne AOC, is a ripe, round, plummy affair made from 75% Grenache, 15% Carignan and 15% Syrah. This is one of those terrific Southern Rhônes you can quaff all day long, with or without food, while wallowing in its seductive, lavender-inflected perfume and lush, opulent texture.

Domaine Albert Boxler is a 300-year-old family estate in the small Alsace town of Niedermorschwihr, and is currently run by Albert’s 34-year-old grandson, Jean Boxler, who trained at France's top wine school, the University of Montpellier, and made his first vintage in 1995. The domaine’s 26 vineyard-acres include parts of the famed Grands Crus Sommerberg and Brand. Indeed, 80 percent of Boxler’s vines are Grand Cru. All grapes are grown organically, and about 5,000 cases of wine are produced annually. According to France magazine (Winter 2006/2007), "Boxler . . . crafts some of Alsace’s most exciting wines from grapes drawn entirely from its own . . . vineyards." This Cremant d'Alsace possesses a delicate nose of fresh flowers and bright fruit. On the palate, it has flavors of apple skin and brioche, with an elegant bubble and nutty aftertaste. Impeccably balanced.

Producer notes: "Good intense purple robe. Fruity bouquet with red fruits and light vanilla notes. Good extraction, not overwhelming. Good attack. Flavors of red cherry, cedar and box tree. Silky, melting tannins. Full bodied with good structure, balance and nice long finish. Perhaps the best value in Médoc wines today."

Last year when we first introduced Domaine Felettig to the US market, they were a virtual unknown. Yet, with no US press, we sold our entire allocation in just one day. Fact is, Chambolle at this price simply doesn't exist anymore. Despite incredible holdings, it was only after Henri Felettig recently handed control over to his son and daughter, Gilbert and Christine, that things began to change. With the assistance of neighbor Louis-Michel Liger-Belair in the vineyards, their raw material vastly improved and the wines took off. In the cuvérie, they began employing minimal intervention and new oak is kept to 40% for the 1er Crus and 20-30% for the appellation Villages. The resulting wines are at once pure, dense and energetic, reminiscent of a hypothetical cross between Mugnier and Roumier. Every wine importer in the country is trying to get a piece of them after John Gilman recently wrote them up as "the next big thing," but our direct sourcing, we are able to offer them at exceptional pricing.
Tasting notes: From a tiny plot next to the church sandwiched between Feusselottes and Les Cras, this is more structured than the "regular" Chambolle, but with more finesse and longevity.

We recently discovered this producer from Chambolle. Though the domaine has been around for a while, and has incredible holdings, few know much if anything about them. Part of the reason is because they are so tiny. For instance, with the exception of their Chambolle villages, none of Felettig's holdings are larger than 0.5ha, so the wines seldom make their way to the US. In fact, even in Europe, they're nearly impossible to find. The other reason is that it was only after Henri Felettig recently handed control over to his son and daughter, Gilbert and Christine, that the wines became great. With the assistance of neighbor Louis-Michel Liger-Belair in the vineyards, their raw material vastly improved. In the cuvérie, they began employing minimal intervention and new oak is kept to 40% for the 1er Crus and 20-30% for the appellation Villages. The resulting wines are at once pure, dense and energetic, reminiscent of a hypothetical cross between Mugnier and Roumier. We're certainly not putting Felettig in the same league as these two icons, just illustrating their style.
This is the only bottling of Carrières on the market and exhibits a unique spiciness we've yet to detect elsewhere in Chambolle. Highly recommended.

The Chambolle Feusselottes is from an old vine parcel in the lieu-dit of Les Grands Murs, on the plateau rather than in the dip. This wine possesses such great energy and balance, we would love to put it side by side with Mugneret-Gibourg.

Producer notes: "60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Lovely rich red in color, aromas of licorice, leather and ripe red fruits. On the palate it is fresh, with the red fruits and licorice following from the nose. Full bodied, harmonious and well structured with firm tanins, it is elegant yet powerful. A perfect match with roasted or grilled meats or game and of course with a nice ripe Camembert or Roquefort."

70% Chardonnay and 30% Savignin from clay and limeston-rich soils, made in an oxidative style. You will find a burnished gold wine with aromas of hazelnut, spice, and white alpine flowers; marked simultaneously by both its vinification/élevage and by its fruit. The classic accompaniments are chicken with cream and morels (of course!), rich/creamy cheeses, spicy dishes, mushrooms, and white meats. Stéphane Tissot has been totally biodynamic (and certified thus) since 2000.
16.5/20 points La Revue du Vin de France: "Superb freshness and complexity. An incisive, nervy and precise, with excellent intensity, tonic, and refinement. Thirty months of aging without stirring. (Apr 2012)"

Trousseau is one of the principle red grapes from the Jura region of France. It is also called Bastardo, a component of port wine in Portugal. Winemaker Stéphane Tissot uses a biodynamic process with no chemicals or synthetic pesticides to make this wine. Light ruby in color. Bold aromas include black pepper, red fruits (strawberry, raspberry), and a touch of forest floor. In the mouth, the flavors echo the aromas of red fruits, black pepper and earthiness. Nice acidity and firm tannins make for good structure. Beautifully complex and juicy. Highly recommended.

Following in his father's footsteps (Alain Verdet, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture since the 1970s), Aurélien learned under the renowned David Duband before returning to the family estate in the Haut Côtes de Nuits. He started as a producer with a small trading business with the 2005 vintage. The wines are of high quality, crafted in a modern style but without excess. Quantities are small, however, especially as the growing success of the wines have increased demand. The Chambolle Fuées is quite elegant and with good length.

On the midslope surrounded by Cras, Damodes, and Murgers, the tiny Richemone vineyard offers a fleshy, seductive fruit of cherry liqueur and spice accompanied by fine, velvety tannins. The wine has wonderful weight and sweetness to the fruit. It has good power, yet still delicate, elegant, precise and expressive. An outstanding wine for Aurélien Verdet, proving why he was recently named the best young winemaker in the Côtes de Nuits.

Allen Meadows (Burghound): "A moderately spicy red and blue pinot fruit nose precedes forward, accessible and attractively textured middle weight flavors that possess good vibrancy and sufficient phenolic maturity to avoid the tanginess that some '08s are given to. This is pretty and very Vosne if not especially concentrated. Note that this could already be drunk with pleasure though it should be capable of rewarding a few years in the cellar first. Drink: 2012+. (Jan 2011)"
