93 points and 'Top 50 Spirits 2011,' Wine Enthusiast: "This sweet vermouth is deep and intriguing, from the dark winy color to the plummy, raisin-like fragrance. A fleeting sweetness, redolent of dried fruit and juicy prune notes, gives way to a dry, bitter finish, which saves it from becoming cloying. Medium to heavy in feel. Very easy drinking, especially with ice, and it's easy to imagine sipping this, well chilled, on a hot day. Highly Negroni-worthy. (Feb 2011)"

Producer notes: "Made to the same recipe since 1891, this extraordinary aperitif wine has long been a staple of Asti. It is Cocchi's estate wine infused with a blend of herbs, fruit and spices, most notably geian, cinchona and citrus, and laid down for a year before release. In Piemonte it is served with ice, a slice of orange and a splash of soda to bring out all its fragrance and depth. Given the long tradition of its style, Americano Cocchi became a preferred element of many classic mixed drinks."
Cocchi Americano is generally considered to be the nearest contemporary drink to the original recipe Kina Lillet and is often used as a substitute for it in cocktails such as the vesper martini and the corpse reviver #2.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "If 'sipping mezcal' doesn't exist, the category may have to be created for this limited-edition mezcal (only 14 three-bottle sets were produced). This 'single village' mezcal is aged for 14 years in glass bottles and then is finished in a Stags Leap Cabernet barrel for 43 days. The result is a light nut-brown color and offers beautiful aromas of raisin, vanilla and dark chocolate, with a mellow pepper note in the background. Sweet agave nectar and honey flavors finish with a muted peppery sting. (Dec 2010)"
3-1/2 stars and Top Pick, New York Times: "Smooth, briny and complex, simultaneously fruity, herbaceous and vegetal. (8/18/10)"
Faustino Garcia Vasquez is the maker of Chichicapa. He is a humble and talented craftsmen with great respect for the ancient processes. Chichicapa has a relatively light nose, yet is deep and sweet on the tongue with a very complex character. It has a long finish, with a distinct smokiness and hint of mint at the end.

Dolin Vermouths are notably lighter, drier and less pungent than their larger commercial counterparts. The particular mixture of plants found near Chambéry give a fresh, restrained and elegant nose, with a subtle, complex bittersweet palate. Even the Blanc and Rouge retain great balance, with the sugar never cloying, and just enough bitterness to whet the appetite. Each can be enjoyed as aperitif on ice, with a twist of citrus, or in a broad array of traditional cocktails.
Los Angeles Times 'Wine of the Week': "In martinis, I've been enjoying the dry vermouth from the old French house of Dolin in Chambéry in the French Alps. But I recently tried Dolin's blanc (as opposed to dry) as an apéritif all on its own. Served on the rocks with a twist of lemon, it has a wonderfully complex taste, herbal but more sweet than medicinal. It tastes like a meadow full of wildflowers, refreshing and pure. And each small sip carries so much interest you tend to drink it more slowly than a glass of wine to make it last. The recipe (and the firm) dates from the 19th century. Basically, Dolin vermouth is white wine steeped in as many as 54 plants and herbs (including wormwood, hyssop, quinine bark and rose petals) for some months. The difference between more commercial vermouths and this one is quite dramatic. I should note too that Vermouth de Chambéry has had its own appellation since the '30s. (1/6/10)"
Wine & Spirits: "A sweet white vermouth from an artisanal producer in the French Alps that has taken the cocktail world by storm. Floral, herbal, incredibly clean and bright. Mixes extremely well with citrus. (Fall 2010)"

****Highly Recommended, F. Paul Pacult (Spirit Journal): "Medium amber color; flawless purity. Bright, compelling, fruity/bakery aromas of baked banana bread, baked pears and apple cobbler make for delightful early-on sniffing; further air contact time of seven minutes encourages the ripe fruit aspect to deepen as gentle spice notes, especially pepper and allspice, round out an exceptional bouquet experience. Entry is moderately oily, delicately spiced and even a touch honeyed; midpalate features the spice element in spades, making for zesty, tangy sipping. Aftertaste focuses squarely on the fruit component again along with a last minute hit of rye bread. Lots going on here...all of it good. (Sep 2011)"
92 points and 'Top 50 Spirits 2012,' Wine Enthusiast: "Produced in Canada but bottled in Louisville, this 100% rye whiskey is aged 10 years. Deep gold color, vanilla and peach aroma, soft and full-bodied, this rye has a pleasing citric brightness, lingering peachy and caramel notes with a smattering of cinnamon and clove. Would be great savored with a chunk of ice, or mixed into a rye Manhattan. (12/31/12)"
Although known for their small batch, high quality bourbons, McLain & Kyne, the company responsible for creating and bottling Jefferson's Reserve, has recently released their first rye whiskey. Distilled entirely from rye and aged for ten years, Jefferson's Straight Rye Whiskey is bold, spicy and thoroughly enjoyable.

Producer notes: "Our handcrafted Absinthe Verte is prepared following the traditions of European master distillers of the 19th Century. We start with imported Chilean Pisco, placing it in our small 150 liter copper potstill, carefully adding the traditional Absinthe Verte herbs: Anise, Grande Wormwood, and Sweet Fennel, together with a number of proprietary botanicals. The herbs are gently distilled at a high alcoholic strength, capturing the essential aromas and oils that are in the very heart of our hand selected flowers and herbs. These herbs are grown and harvested in the fields of Spain, France, and Western Europe, and the unmistakable aromas of these peaceful European meadows are captured in every bottle of our Absinthe Verte. Before the Absinthe Verte is bottled, it must undergo a coloring step. Many commercial absinthes are colored artificially. Ours is colored in the most traditional manner by placing our hand selected coloring herbs (Hyssop, Melissa, and Roman Wormwood) in cheesecloth and steeping the blend in warmed Absinthe Verte. These coloring herbs strengthen the floral aromas and citrusy undertones of the finished Absinthe Verte. The high alcohol content of the Absinthe Verte leaches chlorophyll from the plant material, turning it a wholly natural, vibrant green color that is similar to the gemstone Peridot. This unique hue is one of the reasons that French Impressionists of the Belle Époque took so strongly to traditionally prepared, handcrafted Absinthe Verte."

93 points and 'Top 50 Spirits 2011,' Wine Enthusiast: "17% abv. A light, breezy apéritif for white wine lovers. This golden-orange liquid has a tart apple and citrus scent, with a touch of honeysuckle behind that, and a honeyed flavor with a dry, faintly spiced finish. Light-bodied and drinkable, made even more so with the addition of lime juice and club soda. Pair with cheese or charcuterie. (Feb 2011)"
**** Highly Recommended (Spirit Journal): "Golden raisin color; perfect clarity. First nosings pick up the indelible smell of ripe grapes and kiwi, plus some tropical fruit notes, like banana and guava; further aeration brings out a subtle spiciness that rounds out the bouquet in style. Palate entry is luscious, gently fruity/grapy, and keenly acidic, resulting in a remarkably fresh opening taste; midpalate taste profile features kiwi, white grapes, raisins, and a viny/brambly vegetal quality that keeps the ripe fruit in line. Ends up ripe, delicately spiced, and delicious. Always a favorite of mine and as I get older, I appreciate all the more the Blanc's completeness. Deserves the elevation in rating."

Lillet Rosé is created from a blend of the red and white Grand Cru Bordeaux wine varietals used to produce Lillet Blanc and Lillet Rouge. This includes Muscatel grapes for an elegant floral bouquet and Sauvignon Blanc for bright fruit characteristics, as well as Semillon, which lends structure and produces a lingering finish. The wine is then married with artisanal liqueurs crafted from sweet orange peels from Spain and bitter orange peels from Haiti, and a proprietary blend of fruit liqueurs sourced near and produced in Masion Lillet's distillery in Podensac. A small amount of Peruvian quinine is then added to the final blend. Its rose color and taste profile are achieved by adding red fruit liqueurs and a very small amount of Lillet Rouge, using a traditional Champagne blending method to ensure a consistent color throughout. The result is a bright, fruit-forward aperitif with notes of ripe berry, wildflower, melon and stone fruit, complemented by the traditional sweet and bitter citrus notes.

*** Recommended (Spirit Journal): "Beautiful deep ruby/blood red color; excellent purity. Initial whiffs detect pleasingly ripe yet tart aromas of red grapes, raspberries, and blackberries; time in the glass rounds off the bouquet, adding delicate hints of cinnamon and grape vines. Palate entry is clean, tart, and properly fruity; midpalate is intensely grapy, juicy, and savory, but not quite as multi-dimensional as the Blanc. Finishes well in a grape preserves-like manner that's elegant and classy."

This Hors d'Age release comes from a careful blend of barrels from 1990, 1992 and 1999. It shows deep green apple, vanilla and honey notes, a touch of almond, a soft mouthfeel, and a pleasingly long finish. A step up in development from the entry-level releases and a wonderful representation of the third Calvados appellation!

93 points Anthony Dias Blue (The Tasting Panel): "A distillate of fresh figs; smooth, clean and showing an aroma of ripe, earthy figs--sort of a Fig Newton on steroids; lovely dry notes of anise, spice and vanilla; unique and impressive. Kosher."
Mahia, with origins in Morocco, is a distilled spirit made from figs or dates and herbs. It literally translates to "water of life". Traditionally, it was distilled by the Jews but sold throughout the country and became part of its culinary culture.

**** Highly Recommended, F. Paul Pacult, (Spirit Journal): "Very attractive amber/honey hue; superb purity. The first aromatic blast is seductively anise-like, even coming off as black licorice candy, only not as sweet; with aeration the aroma transforms into a bouquet as the anise/licorice tag team mellows out, turning softer, more herbal, and plumper with time; love this bouquet. The palate entry is all business, no nonsense or flapping around is allowed as the intensely bitter taste of anise both enlivens and cleanses the palate; at midpalate the pleasant sting of alcohol and the zest of rooty/woodsy botanicals make for memorable imbibing. Finishes elegantly and smooth, with just a trace of smoldering warmth deep in the throat. Special."

*****Highest Recommendation, F. Paul Pacult (Spirit Journal): "Brilliant maize/sauternes/amontillado color; unblemished clarity. This whisky aroma comes flying out of the glass in the initial whiffs as the spirit engages the olfactory membranes immediately; following seven minutes of aeration, the aroma settles down enough to offer luscious notes of rye bread, oaky vanilla, and light toffee; and type of animated bouquet that I appreciate. Entry is firm, focused on the rye, gently sweet, and caramel-like; midpalate features broadstroke multiple layers of light caramel, cookie dough, brown sugar, oak resin, marshmallow, and honey. Ends on a resiny/sappy note that balances the grainy sweetness. For a first time whiskey effort, even if the master distiller is the gifted David Pickerell, formerly of Maker's Mark, this is a superb opening act, which will be hard to follow. Sensational whiskey and straight rye at its zesty best. (Sep 2010)"
