93 points PinotReport: "[$55/750ml list] Medium-deep ruby color; deep, complex, cranberry and cherry aromas with complex spice and earthy notes; rich, ripe, deep, complex cherry flavors with spicy cranberry and earthy notes; silky, sweet oak; good structure and balance; long finish. Deep, complex Pinot with great flavor. Needs more time to develop. (1/15/12)"
90 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "[$55/750ml list] Good bright dark red. Black raspberry, cherry, cola, pepper and flowers on the nose. Creamy and ripe on entry, then firmer in the middle, with lovely perfume and energy to the flavors of raspberry, cranberry, rose petal, brown spices and minerals. Juicy but substantial pinot noir, finishing with piquant pepper and herb notes from vinification with a portion of the stems?? A good deal of juice was declassified into the winery's Fogdog label to protect the quality of this wine. (May/Jun 2011)"
90 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$55/750ml list] So brisk in acidity, you can taste the ocean winds that chill this coastal vineyard at night. It’s also extraordinarily ripe. Few Pinot Noirs get this fruity. Floods the mouth with the essence of raspberries and cherries. The acidity and a firm minerality give it much needed structure. Alcohol 14%. (Sep 2011)"
'Very good (+),' PinotFile: "[$55/750ml list] 14.0% alc. 100% estate-grown from Pastorale and Quarter Moon vineyards. Aged 14 months in 60% new and 40% 2 to 3-year-old French oak barrels. Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Lovely aromas of black cherries, exotic spice, brier and cut flowers with a slight hint of tobacco smoke, picking up interest and intensity over time in the glass. Black cherry-driven flavors with pleasing oak and whole cluster spice, slightly dwarfed at this stage by oak. Like cherry pie day at cooking school - cherries, baking spices and very interesting results. A solid wine that will improve in the cellar due to its impeccable structure. (5/16/11)"

Weingut Keller, located in the Rheinhessen region, is regularly cited as being among the very finest wines in all of Germany. Renowned wine critic Jancis Robinson has found in blind tastings that Keller's top Spätburgunders rival some of the best know Pinot Noirs from Burgundy.
Eric Asimov of the New York Times recently commented on the upsurge of German Spätburgunder in general and the high quality of Weingut Keller's offerings in particular: "Most people don’t even realize that Germany produces any red wine at all, let alone some very good pinot noir... German pinot noir may seem like a new idea, but it has existed for hundreds of years, ever since the 13th century when, just as they did in Burgundy, Cistercian monks planted pinot noir vines along the Rhine. If spätburgunder is not spoken of with the same reverence as Burgundy, it’s not surprising. While pinot noir was perfectly suited to the Côte d’Or, it struggled to ripen in the cooler German climate. Until recently, most German pinot noirs were lean and pale. The tangy refreshment they offered was not without charm, but far from the depth and complexity of good Burgundy. You can still find those leaner spätburgunders, and I must admit I enjoy them. But climate change has made it easier for pinot noir to ripen, and not just in Baden, the southernmost German wine region and long the leading producer of German red wines... I was not surprised to learn that among the many places Mr. Keller trained before taking over his father’s domaine in Rheinhessen were two Burgundy estates, Hubert Lignier and Armand Rousseau, renowned for their pure, focused wines. Mr. Keller told me that he conceived of his spätburgunders as red rieslings. 'The most elegant grape we have in Germany is the riesling, and pinot noir is its sister,' he said. 'Either you love their finesse or you miss the concentration, it’s very easy.'"
