94 points David Schildknecht (Wine Advocate): "[$155 list] Harvested December 21 in the Gehren parcel, the 2004 Haardter Burgergarten Riesling Eiswein displays caramelized pit fruits, honey, flowers, and fascinating, Jurancon-like musky, meaty notes in the nose. Ravishingly viscous, polished and creamy yet insistently fresh and invigorating on the palate, it offers caramelized and tart visages of apricot and pineapple, musk, sea salt, and drippingly sweet florality. Whether this will acquire something approaching the complexity or uncanny balance of this year's two Muller-Catoir Riesling Auslesen remains to be seen, but in any more normal context its exceptional quality would shine more brightly. (Oct 2005)"
93 points Wine Spectator: "[$155 list] Like the essence of grapefruit and apricot, very pure and focused by its snappy acidity, this dessert Riesling carries its flavors through a long, intense finish. Drink now through 2028. 62 cases made. (4/30/06)"
92 points Joel Payne (International Wine Cellar): "Musky aromas of peach pit, acacia blossom and lemon oil. The delicately polished pineapple fruit and surprisingly creamy texture of this eiswein are offset by a salty minerality that hints at the wine's underlying complexity. Still youthfully closed, but bright, crisp and spicy on the long aftertaste. (Jan/Feb 2006)"

96 points Pierre Rovani (Wine Advocate): "[$456/375ml list] A spectacular Eiswein, the 2002 Riesling Eiswein Bockenauer Felseneck stuns the taster with its apricot nectar, smoke, stone, white peach, and passion fruit aromas as well as by its stratospheric price tag. This wine has immense richness, reveals a flavor profile packed with caramel-laced fruits and a searing acidity that could wake the dead. It has extraordinary purity, grip, depth and a prolonged finish that lasts well over a minute. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040+. (Feb 2004)"
96 points Fine Wine Review: "...the Bockenauer Felseneck Gold Cap Eiswein appears to have some botrytis but also great purity and cutting sharpness from the acidity, making this wine halfway between a classic Eiswein and a Beerenauslese. (Issue #97; 2003)"
94 points Wine Spectator: "[$456/375ml list] Pungent and pleasantly earthy, sporting a thick texture and dense flavors of pineapple, apricot and honey underscored by lemon. Fine sweet/tart character and a long finish. Drink now through 2018. (3/31/04)"

For eight centuries Schloss Vollrads had been known for its fine Rieslings and imposing grounds, complete with castle, stone tower and moat. Fast forward to the 1980s, when ceilings leaked at every rainfall, and vines hadn't been properly pruned in years. By the time Rowald Hepp took over as director of Schloss Vollrads shortly before the 1999 harvest, Germany's oldest winemaking estate couldn't have been in grimmer shape. Indeed, things had gotten so bad that Erwein Graf Matuschka-Greiffenclau, the count who had run the estate, committed suicide after bankruptcy proceedings were launched against him. He'd racked up more than $13 million of debt trying to maintain his family's estate. "My life's work is in ruins," his suicide note read. Hepp turned things around almost immediately. By the time the great 2001 vintage arrived, he had the property running like a Swiss watch. This Eiswein is the result of three below-freezing passes through the vineyard in mid-December. Aromas of fruit eau de vie, citrus, and honey; palate of white raisin and peach marmalade, with almost stinging acidity. A masterpiece.

96 points Wine Spectator: "[$245 list] Like a tropical fruit marmalade, this is thick and flavorful and kept lively by moderate acidity. Dominated by the sweetness today, it needs time to show a full range of flavors. Best from 2008 through 2030. 3 cases imported."

95 points Joel Payne (International Wine Cellar): "[$562 list] Musky aromas of peach, butterscotch and cinnamon rise above the botrytis. Full-bodied caramelized fruits overwhelm the palate, only just balanced by the oyster shell salinity. Succulent sweet flavors pervade the finish. This wine still needs time. (Jan/Feb 2006)"
95 points Wine Spectator: "A silky-smooth dessert white, evoking apricot, honey, lemon and spice aromas and flavors. It's concentrated and lively, with fine intensity on a light-bodied profile. It still needs time to reveal all its charms. Drink now through 2040. 25 cases imported. (4/30/06)"

Picked in November and December, Weil's 2004 Kiedricher Grafenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese ended up being assembled from 25 tiny lots. The astounding aromas include the ocean, lobster reduction, veal demi glace, caramelized peach and quince preserves. Thick, dense and creamy in the mouth, it displays remarkably restrained sweetness and a wafting, delicate sense that is hard to describe. The palate is positively teeming with ocean-deep minerality and field-sized florality. This wine is one of those full immersion experiences from which your soul will emerge changed, if not saved. In the finish, there is an invigorating and animating juiciness and saltiness for all of the persistent parallel impression of creamy richness. One senses that the selection was so deft and the material available so perfect, that a certain number of still juicy, unraisined, green-golden berries could be retained.
99 points David Schildknecht (Wine Advocate): "[$750 list] Opulent aromas of caramelized peach, quince preserves and oyster shell. Incredibly dense and creamy-rich, but the sweetness is leavened by a juicy, almost salty tanginess. In spite of this wine's great depth and weight, it's impressively elegant. Finishes with great persistence."
