87 points Wine Enthusiast: "[$20 list] A lovely Merlot, soft and supple. Shows a fine balance of cherry fruit, herbs and sweet oak, with modest alcohol and dusty tannins. Very nice and elegant. (Dec 2009)"
Producer notes: "Anyone who thinks Merlot is a lightweight has never tried this one. The 2007 is a well-structured wine with the kind of characteristics often ascribed to Cabernet. Those characteristics are the result of the unique qualities of the five vineyards on the valley's southern end that provided the fruit for the 2007. The heavier soils in each of the vineyard sites allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and develop a wide range of flavors. What you will find here is a lush Merlot with aromas of black cherry, plum, blackberry and cassis. In the glass are big flavors of plum, vanilla and dark cherry. On those occassions when you are about to reach for a Cab to serve with a particular dish, try this Merlot. You'll be surprised how good a partner it is."

Producer notes: "Ariel 2007 California Merlot offers all of the benefits of a red wine, with less than half of one percent alcohol. The grapes were grown in San Luis Obispo county, from vineyards known for superior Merlot production. Ariel California Merlot has aromas of cherry, raspberry and cassis, combined with a white chocolate, clove and oak bouquet from the barrel aging. At its optimum maturity two years after bottling, it can be enjoyed immediately or held for up to seven years. Ariel Merlot is the ideal accompaniment to beef, lamb and wild game dishes."

Producer notes: "Merlot (77%), Syrah (9%), Cabernet Sauvignon (14%). Our Merlot, deep garnet in color, has rich black cherry fruit aromas, with hints of eucalyptus and oak. The addition of Clone 6 Cabernet sauvignon adds structure to the wine, giving a Cabernet-like mouthfeel, while the Syrah adds sweet fruit to the finish. Soft tannins balance well with good fruit acidity and concentrated fruit flavors to yield a wine that will develop well with several years of aging. A rich, concentrated, full-bodied Merlot with a lingering finish and supple mouthfeel."
Not yet reviewed; 2005 vintage rated 90 points by Wine Enthusiast: "Soft, juicy and sweet in fruity essence, this polished Merlot brims with flavors of cherries, red currants, licorice, toffee and Asian spices. It’s a full-bodied red wine to drink now with a nice steak. (Jun 2009)"

Producer notes: "90% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. The 2007 vintage is accessible and balanced to accompany with a wide range of dishes. This vintage of Merlot is concentrated, with smoky oak notes from a mix of mostly French and a bit of American barrels. The flavors and aromas are forward, perfumed plush red fruit, and ripe without being overpowering -- a wine that compliments food. There is also a touch of cedar from the oak barrels. The combination of structure, depth and richness makes this 2007 Merlot drinkable now but it could easily age if you can wait. 415 cases produced."

On the beautifully structured palate, the wine offers pure, concentrated, black cherry and plum flavors balanced by bright acidity and round, supple tannins, concluding in a long, elegant finish that showcases a refreshing minerality and savory black-tea spice tone. Sumptuous, elegant and beautifully balanced, this classic Napa Valley Merlot makes delicious drinking now, but will profit from another 2-3 years of bottle age. 90% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Malbec. 95 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "If one looks at the technical data for this wine, it is less ripe than the '85, but its character is fuller, richer, more opulent in the nose and at the center of its flavors. And, to our taste, it has aged extremely well. Because of its acidity, we would drink it up before the fruit fades and the typical sour edge of the older wines creeps in, but make no mistake, this is first rate Merlot in its middle years, and it is one of our favorites from the tasting. 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is 100% varietal, from the Loess, Seven Hills, Pepper Bridge, and Mill Creek Upland vineyards. A deep, intense take on Merlot, it's so dark and concentrated that it dances on the edge of bitterness, but in a style reminiscent of the finest Italian Merlots, that use that flavor to define and elucidate a dark and potent wine. In the mouth it fills out with luscious cherry and plum and blackberry fruit, baking chocolate, coconut and nougat. Yet it remains sleek and stylish, with a strong licorice note. Cellar Selection. (Aug 2010)"
92 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Merlot (100%) spent 15 months in a mix of new and used French oak. It exhibits an aromatic array of smoke, spice box, violets, black cherry, and black raspberry. Elegant on the palate with excellent volume, concentrated, spicy flavors, and a hint of minerality, it has enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years and will offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2022 if not longer. His wine is 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc aged for 22 months in 85% new French oak. Deep crimson-colored, it offers an enticing perfume of toasty new oak, pencil lead, spice box, clove, allspice, red currants and black cherry. Seamless on the palate, the wine has gobs of ripe, savory flavors, well-concealed tannin, excellent aging potential, and a long, pure finish. It will provide much pleasure between 2012 and 2025. Long Shadows is the brainchild of Alan Shoup, longtime CEO of Chateau Ste-Michelle. It is a consortium of seven different labels, each with its own star winemaker who has a 25% share in the brand. The concept is that each 'is dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a ‘best of type’ that reflects the winemaker’s signature style."

Producer notes: "The 2008 vintage Marilyn Merlot is the 24th release of this fine wine. It is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine was aged in 100% oak barrels, 35% of which were new for this vintage. Aromas of Herbes de Provence, primarily thyme and lavender complement the oak components of vanilla and smoke from the wood. Moderate alcohol and good acidity make this wine a good pairing with fine foods. Vineyard locations for this wine are from our longtime growers in Yountville and Oakville regions of the Napa Valley (Yountmill Vineyard 88%, Beckstoffer Vineyard 12%). The striking and glamorous image of Marilyn Monroe in a purple, shoulderless cocktail dress is from photos done for the release of The Asphalt Jungle in 1950, a film noir classic for which John Huston was nominated for an Oscar and in which Marilyn plays to perfection her role as the mistress of a crooked attorney."

Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): "The 2008 Merlot DuBrul Vineyard was aged in 40% new oak. It displays a perfume of cedar, spice box, cassis, cherry blossom, and black cherry. Soft and easy-going, this is a savory, spicy effort meant for near-term drinking. (Aug 2010)"
Producer notes: "What made this wine was in winemaker’s speak -- hang time. As these clusters hung into the third week of September they arrived at physiological ripeness when our northern days had gotten considerably shorter. With the fruit ripening in comparatively cool temperatures all the flavor esters and color in the skins were elevated resulting in fullest flavor, cooler, almost perfect pH/acid balance; each harbingers of age worthiness. This combined with Hugh Shiels masterful grape growing and a site that competes on the world’s stage for Merlot and you have this wine. I just tasted the 1999 vintage which is very youthful -- upon release I wrote -- "this wine is powerful, super-intense, and should age well into the next decade." Now I have to say that it will age well into this decade as well. 163 cases made."

Like so many wines that have emerged from this Spring Mountain vineyard, it offers delicious drinking. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years. (Dec 2009)"
91 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "Deeply fruited, impressively filled with a very keen sense of dark, well-ripened cherries that indelibly marks it as Merlot, Paloma's latest is an especially well-balanced working that is at once very rich, refined and remarkably polished. It does show a streak of fine-grained finishing tannins, but there is nothing so coarse as to raise any worries, and the wine's fruit eases its way past a bit of last-minute astringency. As good Merlot will, this one might tempt early drinking, but it has a long life before it and should evolve for years to come. (Sep 2010)"
Producer notes: "Complex aromas of black berry fruits, black stone fruits, chocolate, tobacco, spice and floral notes with a mineral overtone. On the palate the wine has a big silky mouth feel, well balanced, with flavors of berries, fruit, cocoa, cassis, and spice, and a long spicy finish. Fruit tannins are big, but not harsh and are well integrated with the strong fruit component."

92 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Merlot, which comes from both Napa and Sonoma fruit (the Pride Mountain vineyards are split by the county line), exhibits a dense purple color as well as abundant chocolate and berry fruit notes, medium to full body, and great freshness, length, and depth. It is a heady, succulent style of Merlot to drink over the next 7-10 years. (Dec 2009)"
92 points Connoisseurs' Guide: "From its intense, deeply filled aromas of caramel, chocolate, ripe berries, tobacco and coffee to its dramatic and highly extracted flavors, this wine goes right to the brink in terms of richness and power without quite going over the edge. It is hefty stuff by any and all standards, but it is overly heavy and is nicely balanced for the big wine that it is. Its slightly abrasive, tannin-laced finish tags it as one to let rest in the cellar, but its potential for five or more years of growth is beyond question. (Mar 2010)"

A nicely balanced, penetrating midweight with modest flesh but a silky texture and intriguing, understated redcurrant and mocha flavors. This young wine relies as much on its acids as on its suave tannins for structure. Finishes with good persistence and subtle soil tones. (May/Jun 2010)"

It is full, fat and fleshy on the palate with layers of mocha, black cherries, vanilla and cream running its length, but it is also a bit hot at the finish with a rise in last-minute tannins that says it would be wise to set it aside for a few years despite its many immediate appeals. It is full, fat and fleshy on the palate with layers of mocha, black cherries, vanilla and cream running its length, but it is also a bit hot at the finish with a rise in last-minute tannins that says it would be wise to set it aside for a few years despite its many immediate appeals. (Mar 2010)"

Producer notes: "92% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot. Aromas of earth, dried herbs and cherry. On the palate, medium body, lush fruit flavors and balanced acidity with a long finish that has a tingle and a tang and starts the evening with a bang."

Producer notes: "Merlot is NOT Cabernet. Thinner skinned and earlier ripening than the other great Claret varieties, it needs a cooler growing site to slow down sugar development, allowing flavor ripeness to catch up. That is why we like our Mt. George vineyard which gives our Merlot its oily herbal and black berry fruit flavors with a serious core of tannin for body. Aromas of earth, dried herbs and cherry. On the palate, medium body, lush fruit flavors and balanced acidity with a long finish that has a tingle and a tang."

Producer notes: "94% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc. Our 2004 Twomey Merlot is an elegant, concentrated wine that balances delicacy and expression of fruit. It has a dark ruby color and a complex nose of black cherry, raspberry, violets and dark chocolate, with hints of lightly toasted bread. It offers multiple layers of cherry liqueur, toffee, chocolate and amaretto flavors, culminating in a long fruity finish. Given proper cellaring, this full-bodied Merlot will continue to give drinking pleasure until 2016."

Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "($70 list) Bright, deep red-ruby. Red berries, tobacco, pine resin and a whiff of herbs on the nose. Suave, young and dry, with a slightly tart quality to the flavors of plum, redcurrant and tobacco. There's a light greenness here but also a subtle smoky sweetness. Finishes fresh and firm, with a fine dusting of tannins. This has been a consistently intriguing and understated merlot in recent vintages. (Dec 2008)"

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Here's a really good Merlot from a producer that does a great job at it and has kept prices fair for years. It shows the rich tannic structure that Napa so effortlessly achieves, while the great vintage ripened the grapes to blackberry and cherry perfection. Luscious now and for a couple more years. An Editors' Choice. (Dec 2008)"
Producer notes: "85% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Syrah. This appealing wine offers aromas of blackberry, violet and oak. It gains its depth from a combination of plum, wild berries and cola flavors that are beautifully balanced and lingering. The wine is ready to enjoy now and will also improve with cellaring to 2012."

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A beautiful Merlot, noble and classic. It doesn't have the stuffing for cellaring, but is absolutely lovely now, with fine, brisk tannins framing flavors of cherries, herbs and sweet oak, and a lingering finish. An Editors' Choice. (Dec 2009)"
