89 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of mature apricot, tropical fruit and citrus zest lead the nose. The round, juicy palate offers ripe yellow peach, poached pear and juicy tangerine alongside fresh acidity. Alcohol 13%. (Jul 2016)"

Importer notes: "The winery Ancilla Lugana is located on the shores of beautiful Lake Garda in northeastern Italy, in the immediate area of the historic town of Sirmione, on an isthmus complete with medieval drawbridge and crenellated castle walls surrounding the even more ancient Roman thermal-baths resort. Here, cool breezes from the Dolomites to the north mitigate the warmth of the glacial plain with its predominantly clay soils laced with limestone. Luisella Benedetti is the third generation of women to run this estate, having inherited the farm known as 'La Ghidina' from her mother, who inherited in turn from her mother, named Ancilla. She carries on her grandmother’s great passion for the vineyards and for the local Turbiana variety, also known as Trebbiano di Lugana. The wine labeled 1909 is in fact a tribute to her grandmother: named for the year of her birth, it is produced and bottled without any added sulfites, as practiced during her grandmother’s lifetime."

Producer notes: "100% Nebbiolo (known locally as Chiavennasca). Transparent garnet red, this easy drinking red wine from Lombardia exhibits gentle floral aromas, which lead to a fresh, fruity, harmonious taste. It is easy to match with food but is perfect with all traditional cuisine from Valtellina."

WHWC Staff Notes: "The 2004 Balgera Sassella Valtellina Superiore Riserva is a quintessential example of the high altitude finesse that Valtellina's greatest sub-region brings to the Nebbiolo grape. The aromatic profile brings outsized complexity for the price point, with aromas of fresh roses, anise, raspberry and red plum seamlessly melding with secondary notes of dried leaves, new leather, and mint. The palate is, once again, all class as the medium weight and fine grained tannins resemble a well-built Volnay, with primary flavors of smoked prosciutto, strawberries, and maraschino cherries giving way to the earthy side of asphalt and dark cocoa powder. The wine is squarely in its prime drinking window right now, and needs no decanting or aeration to show its full spectrum of character. It's a wonderfully unique expression of Italy's most noble red grape variety." - Andrew Kitz (1/10/17)

WHWC Staff Notes: "If you've followed my recommendations in these reviews, you may have noticed that I have quite an affinity for sparkling wines. As I'm the resident Italian specialist, I drink my fair share of Prosecco, but I'm always looking for new and exciting bubbles from all over the Boot. The Franciacorta DOCG in Lombardy is regarded as the best region in all of Italy for producing high-quality sparkling wine. This wine is made of 100% Chardonnay and aged on the lees for 36 months (more than twice as long as typical NV Champagne). Vigna Dorata is a tiny producer that has farmed their six-hectare property for over 20 years. Watching the vineyard from a particular vantage point at certain hours of the day, it looks golden, hence the name of the property, which translates to English as 'Golden Vineyard.' The tiny bubbles lift aromas of crunchy apple and Asian pear from the glass. With most Franciacorta coming in at Champagne prices, I'm going to stock up on this one, especially at this Prosecco-like price!" - Matt Bayless, 10/28/16
