87 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "Becker's bright ruby-colored 2012 Spätburgunder offers a very delicate and floral bouquet of red berries. Medium-bodied, fresh and pure, this silky textured Pinot Noir seems light but the finish reveals good grip, fruit intensity and a persistent power. Very good quality and a serious alternative to generic Bourgognes. Drink: 2015-2018. (Dec 2015)"

87 points Wine & Spirits: "An old-school German pinot noir, this is dark and earthy, with plenty of caramel from oak to sweeten the mulled fruit flavor. Play up the earthy richness with a mushroom fricassee. (Dec 2016)"

Importer notes: "Some of the fruit for this Estate Pinot Noir is from the estate's top Grosses Gewächs vineyards. The chalky limestone yields supple flavors of black cherry fruit, baked rhubarb, and blueberry on the palate. There's a velvety finesse, which yields to aromatic violets and lavender, freshly picked tarragon, cola and bitter dark chocolate. A real crowd pleaser! Alcohol 13.5%."

Importer notes: "The Kaiserstuhl can justifiably claim to be the single best-known district of Baden. Its volcanic soils and singularly warm climate give rise to powerful, vibrant Pinots of every type. Cousins Martin and Arne Bercher are the tenth generation of the family to run this highly-reputed estate... The loess-rich soils of the village of Jechtingen produce a more delicate style of wine... The impression is tender but well-braced, with a billowing quality to the fruit and a deliciously sweet-fruited yet spicy aftertaste. It is however a real trocken wine!"

WHWC Staff Notes: "The Burkheimer Weissburgunder (100% Pinot Blanc) is unmistakably racy in both its aromas and flavors. The volcanic soils of the area give this wine a very high-toned bouquet of unripe white peach, orange zest, white pepper, and pear. Flavors of tart green apple and lemon are underpinned by a medium-weight palate with electric acidity and minerality. Pair this wine with ceviche, crudo, or any dish emphasizing clean, elegant flavors. In a land of sometimes esoteric and imposing wine styles, this is one of the friendliest white wines you could ask for, at a price that seems to defy its level of quality." -Andrew Kitz, 8/29/15

Bercher’s originality is to offer an education in the influence of volcanic soils (Burkheim) versus loess (Jechtingen). In 2013, we narrowly preferred the fervid pungency of Burkheim as it influenced the Pinot Blanc. This is an imposing, palpably mineral wine that nonetheless has plenty of flesh on its manly bones. Wines like this lend support to the notion that Austria has a serious rival to its claim to make the world’s best Pinots Blancs!"

96 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2015 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese is lovely, clear and flinty on the nose and, like the Spätlese, is characterized by its noble aristocracy, but also lemony freshness and great purity. There seems to be more crushed stones than grapes in this wine, which reflects a lot of the fastidious selection and the healthy condition of the processed grapes. On the palate, this is a generous and concentrated, but pure, piquant and buoyant Auslese of great expression and finesse. This vibrating wine is dancing over the palate, leaving loads of minerals and salts, which makes this a dangerous drug. The finish is piquant and salty -- you simply can't stop drinking and adoring it. There is so much grip, tension and finesse here. Drink: 2025-2050." (Dec 2013)

94 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 Hermannsh&ounl;hle Goldkapsel Auslese is also a stunning wine in the making, but at least at this early stage, it does not seem to have quite the same completeness of its Brücke counterpart. The bouquet is pure, refined and very vibrant in its blend of apple, white cherry, citrus zest, white flowers and beautiful minerality. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish, racy and very classy in profile, with a fine core, exceptional complexity in the making, racy acids and laser-like focus on the long, refined and classic finish. Dynamite wine. 2021-2075." (Mar/Apr 2016)

91 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 Leistenberg Kabinett is a bit more powerful in personality in this vintage than is customarily the case for this wine at Weingut Dönnhoff. The deep and classy nose delivers a blend of apple, white cherry, slate, a nice touch of wild yeasts and a topnote of spring flowers. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long and nascently complex, with a good core, fine cut and grip and a very long, succulent finish. This is not as filigreed as many of the Kabinetten that I tasted from the vintage, but it is a beautifully proportioned wine of style and grace. 2016-2035. (Mar/Apr 2016)"

91 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "Coming from argillaceous shale soils, the 2015 Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett opens with a very clear and coolish, slightly flinty bouquet with white Riesling and some refreshing lemon flavors. Full-flavored and intense on the palate, this is a lovely, light-hearted, piquant and racy Riesling with intensity and persistency. The 40+ grams of residual sugar are almost fully eaten by the minerality and piquancy of this picture book Kabinett. (Dec 2016)"

96 points Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com): "Dönnhoff's first dry Riesling from their monopole Brücke (bridge) site in many years with a much more limited production than the other GGs. Tart blackcurrant and grapefruit notes dominate the nose suggesting that this is going to be quite a cool and tart wine, and indeed it is. Enormous drive and depth on the palate lead into a whiplash finish." (9/9/16)

95 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "There is only a single cask of the 2015 Brücke Grosses Gewächs, which is the only time that a GG has been produced from this vineyard by the Dönnhoff family. It is going to be fascinating as the years go by to see how this wine blossoms, as it shows even more filigree out of the blocks than the supremely elegant 2015 Hermannshöhle GG. The bouquet is superb, offering up scents of tart orange, pink grapefruit, complex slate minerality, wild yeasts, lemongrass, dried flowers and a topnote of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, crisp and very primary in personality, with a fine core, snappy acids and outstanding grip and focus on the very long and very pure finish. This will be a dynamite wine in the fullness of time and it will be interesting to see how high its price goes at the auctions in Bad Kreuznach in September, as it has never been made before! 2024-2065." (Mar/Apr 2016)

94 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The auctioned 2015 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling GG (AP #30 16) has been made for the first time since 1998. The wine has a very clear, pure and stony bouquet with some nutty or almond flavors and reveals great finesse and freshness, but is more closed and masculine than the other crus. Full-bodied, intense and elegant on the palate, this is a powerful, vital, tightly woven and racy Riesling with grip, tension and more body and tannins. This is a more rural type of Riesling for a Riesling-lover who prefers richer, more full-bodied and powerful wines--other Dönnhoff wines are more on the bright, finessed and dancing style. It was picked very late--the latest of all the dry crus. It was picked a few days after the Spätlese and Auslese, since there was almost no botrytis or frost to produce a noble sweet wine or even an Eiswein. Total production: roughly 1000 liters." 93 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "From a steep, south-facing vineyard on red sandstone soils, the 2015 (Roxheimer) Höllenpfad Riesling Trocken opens with warm and generous yellow apple fruit, but also a coolish and piquant sand stone expression with spicy and even peppery lemon flavors. 'The grapes are always smaller here than in the Kahlenberg and the berries [are] very intense in their fine fruit aromas,' says Helmut Dönnhoff. The roots can go through the sandstone, which is not the case in the volcanic soils of Niederhausen and Oberhausen. As a result, drought stress is very rare and that makes the Höllenpfad a perfect origin for dry Rieslings. On the palate, this is a generously fruity, but also pure, piquant and finely racy Riesling with lingering salinity and lemony freshness. The wine is dense and generous, but precise, fresh and rather cool instead of warm. It is a gorgeous Riesling that combines the warmth of the northern Nahe, closer to the Rhine river, with the purity and salinity of the Niederhausen/Oberhausen. The finish is pretty, long and aromatic, and the ripe apples remain on the palate as do the stony flavors. (Dec 2016)"

90+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 Höllenpfad Trocken is another very strong effort, but the wine is a bit more bound up in its youthful structure today than the Kahlenberg and will want a year or two longer in the cellar to start to blossom. The primary bouquet delivers scents of grapefruit, lemongrass, wild yeasts, dried flowers, a touch of the vintage’s botanical overtones and gentle smokiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and nascently complex, with a very solid core, brisk acids and fine backend mineral drive on the long and well-balanced finish. A lovely bottle that will need a bit of time in the cellar to start to drink with generosity. 2020-2050. (Mar/Apr 2016)"

92 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 Kirschheck Spätlese is a classic example in the making, as here the filigree of the vintage is very much in evidence. The nose wafts from the glass in a very pure and classy blend of apple, white cherry, beautiful slate undertow, wild yeasts, bee pollen and a topnote of apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, medium-full and shows lovely inner tension, with a fine girdle of acidity, excellent focus and grip and a long, complex finish. The inherent delicacy of the Kirschheck works perfectly with the style of the vintage. 2019-2040. (Mar/Apr 2016)"

91 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2015 Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese is clear, piquant and salty on the nose, with great purity and a lovely flintiness framing the ripe yellow apple and grapefruit aromas. On the palate, this is a pretty, complex and salty Spätlese with generous but delicate fruit and lingering mineral tension and salinity. Grown on the same soil as the Leistenberg Kabinett (grey slate) but from a fully south-facing site, this is a perfect Spätlese terroir. Although this wine has just 9% alcohol, it is intense and complex and has 65 grams of residual sugar. It is a really full-bodied Riesling. (Dec 2016)"

93 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2014 Brücke Spätlese is really a lovely wine this year, but it cannot quite compete with the really classic example of this bottling crafted here in 2013. The wine offers up a lovely and quite complex bouquet of tangerine, apple, a classy base of slate, wild yeasts, a nice touch of Brücke spice tones and a topnote of apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish, pure and seamless, with a rock solid core, ripe acids and excellent length and grip on the focused and vibrant finish. This is really a lovely bottle of Spätlese. 2020-2050. (Mar/Apr 2015)"

93 points David Schildknecht (Vinous): "Redcurrant, lime and mint waft alluringly from the glass. The luscious and delicate palate suggests jellied redcurrant and lime sorbet laced with green herbal extracts as well as mineral salts. The result is coolingly soothing yet at the same time stimulating, not least of the salivary glands. Suggestions of almond paste and candied lime peel tug the long finish in a confectionery direction but without primary juiciness or refreshment being denied. (May 2016)"

90 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "From volcanic soils the 2015 (Estate) Riesling Trocken is lovely, pure, refined and mineral on the nose, displaying ripe white fruit aromas and crushed stone flavors. On the palate, this is a tension-filled, lovely, juicy and intense Riesling of great elegance, lightness and finesse. 'This is a typical Riesling from this part of the Nahe valley and it's far too good for an Estate Riesling,' says Helmut Dönnhoff. The grapes are from south/southeast-facing vineyards (Oberhausen, Felsenberg and Kieselberg) and ripen later, sometimes they are picked pretty late--about in the middle of the main harvest. But, there are parts that are picked in the very end. This is a gorgeous Riesling and the best Estate Riesling I have ever tasted here." (Dec 2016)

88 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The Estate Riesling from 2015 came in at a very svelte 11.9 percent alcohol and really is a lovely 'basic' bottling. The bouquet is bright and complex, offering up scents of grapefruit, a touch of white cherries, lovely, wild yeast overtones and a classy base of minerality. On the palate the wine is pure, medium-full, crisp and focused, with a rock solid core, lovely backend mineral drive and fine length and grip on the vibrant finish. 2016-2030. (Mar/Apr 2016)"

93+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2012 Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs had already been assembled and the final blend decided upon at the time of my visit, and there will be two casks of this lovely wine produced in this vintage. This is going to be a superb bottle, but it will want six or seven years of bottle age to really reach its apogee. The superb nose jumps from the glass in a youthful blend of gooseberry, white currant, lime zest, smoke, petrol, a beautifully complex base of soil and a gentle topnote of wild yeasts. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with laser-like focus, a rock solid core, racy acids and simply superb length and grip on the perfectly-balanced and very classy young finish. Vibrantly aromatic; the palate is like a perfectly salted veal stock; a teeny bit of pointedness peeks out and is quickly subsumed into a graceful juiciness; Pfalz at its truest and most elegant."

Huge authority for a ’14; a searching intricate aroma leads into a palate of atmospheres; imagine burning a mineral candle and inhaling the smoke; subtly woodsy and not so subtly salty; it has the ’14 chewiness and density--and also the tannin—and finally a bobcat grace. Aromas and flavors of red berry fruit, sour cherry, wild rose and minerality. Food Pairing: stew, duck, deer, salmon. Klingenberg is one of Germany's most famous historical Pinot sites. In 2004, Fürst bought three plots on this impressive slope, including one between the wing walls of Klingenberg castle. From 2004 to 2006, they were planted with the best Pinot Noir vines, and hundreds of yards of dry stone wall were restored.

91 points Fine Wine Review: "The Hunsrücke 'R' Spätburgunder has spicy, dusty red fruit aromas. In the mouth, the wine shows finesse with red fruits. The structure here is almost seamless, reminding me of a Dujac Charmes-Chambertin, Gevrey-Combottes, or Morey 1er Cru from a lighter year back in the days when Jacques Seysses made the wines. (Issue #129; 2010)"

Stephan Reinhardt (The Finest Wines of Germany): "The Fürst Pinots, already excellent for 15 years, have become even more elegant, being both finer and purer: In all Germany, there are not many that can compete on quality or style... Along with all the other Fürst wines, the Spätburgunders are grown in red Buntsandstein, the oldest soils of the Lower German Triassic. The topsoils are loamy, sandy, and well structured, with little stones. This warm and well-draining soil has been ideally suited to the capricious red variety that is Pinot Noir for hundreds of years... the three crus, Schlossberg, Centrgrafenberg, and Hunsrück, are always made with a high proportion of whole bunches, the rest being very gently destemmed... In normal years, Hunsrück is made with 70-80 percent of stems... The firm, spicy, darkly fruity Hunsrück is from the oldest vines (mostly German clones planted in 1983) and the ripest stems, whereas the fine and elegant Centgrafenberg comes mostly from younger French vines and has a more red-fruit character... The Hunsrück is the most powerful and structured wine of the trio... (2012)"

Importer notes: "The Klingenberger 'Grand Cru' shows a basket of red fruit along with pepper and spice. Lots of power and noblesse with cherries, raspberries and roses. Reminds of superb Vosne-Romanée or great Volnay. Fermented in new oak with 60% on the stems. Only 300 sixpacks produced. 13.5% alcohol. The Fürst family has been involved in winemaking since 1638... Since the 2007 vintage, Paul Fürst works with his son Sebastian who completed his Oenological studies at Geisenheim and as well learned from top estates in Burgundy, South Africa and Germany... The estate's primary holdings are in the Bürgstadter Centrafgrafenberg, Klingenberger Schlossberg and Volkacher Karthäuser (Franken). The soil profiles are weathered red sandstone laced with loess loam and limestone (primarily in Volkach). The vineyards are planted 54% to Pinot Noir, 18% Riesling, 16% Pinot Blanc, and 12% Frühburgunder (a mutation of Pinot Noir) and other varieties. Paul makes some of the world's finest Pinot Noirs and possibly the world's finest Frühburgunder. Trademarks of Fürst's wines are their incredible finesse and refinement. Paul was chosen 'Winemaker of the Year' in the 2003 German Wine Guide -- Gault-Millau."

Producer notes: "In the village of Hattenheim, in the heart of the Rheingau, the oldest family is the Gerhard's. They are first mentioned in the village's chronicle in 1442--fifty years before Christopher Columbus sailed to America. The ancestors of Stefan Gerhard have been closely related to Rheingau's viticulture and wine trade. The 'Schützenhaus' site produces weighty to powerful wines. This site grows wines that are full of taste and with a fine touch of acidity. Ageability is good. In the north of this southwest site there is a small area of top-gravel and middle- and seep-slate soil. In the south there is mainly deep limey and marly soil."

WHWC Staff Notes: "Gerhard's Schützenhaus Spätlese Trocken falls on the more powerful end of the spectrum. The wine is ripe as evidenced by the deep aromas of green apple, nectarine, and orange blossom, but site specificity is also present in the briny, mineral core. The palate is dense and viscous, and while the fruit profile is somewhat restrained at present, the vibrant minerality and racy acid give foundation to the sleek texture. This wine will continue to evolve for at least another 8 years and perhaps even longer." — Andrew Kitz (12/29/16)

94-95 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "Can the 2015 Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling trocken GG top the excellent Nackenheim '1er Cru'? Wow, it can! This wine is very clear, precise and very deep on the stony and smoky--or rather flinty--nose. There are ripe stone fruit aromas that come along as more discreet and spicy, with crushed slate notes. On the palate, the minerals buffer the lively acidity and give an almost mealy, round and silky texture. This is a noble wine with a stimulatingly salty and vibrating finish. If you don't want to miss one of the greatest wines made from the red slope in 2015, then this is surely a wine to buy. Drink: 2017-2030. (6/20/16)"

94 points Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com): "Complex nose of red berries, pink grapefruit and fresh herbs. This may only be medium-bodied, but a great deal of mineral and herbal character has been packed into this sleek frame (only 12% alcohol), and the finish is really long and polished; excellent ageing potential. A selection of early-picked fruit from both the Juffer and Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyards, the Brauneberger Riesling Kabinett has a very fine, delicate structure and pure, enervating fruitiness that exemplifies the Fritz Haag style. The Brauneberger Kabinett Riesling has a very fine, delicate structure, with a lifted aroma that is an intriguing combination of lime peel, fresh herbs and a spicy tingle. That said, it is really a very pretty wine, wafting from the glass in a mix of white cherries, apple, wild yeasts, slate, iris blossoms and just a whisper of petrol in the upper register. 93+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 Ohligsberg GG is an excellent wine in the making, delivering a fine aromatic constellation of white cherries, tart pear, smoky overtones, a superb base of slate minerality, a touch of wild yeasts and a topnote of currant leaf. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and quite suave on the attack, with lovely elegance to its structural chassis, bright, ripe acids and excellent length and grip on the focused and youthful finish. Really a lovely wine. 2019-2040." (Mar/Apr 2016)

89-91 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 Karthäuserhofberg Kabinett was not de-acidified and finished off with forty-four grams per liter of residual sugar and 7.9 grams per liter of acidity. The wine offers up a very pretty bouquet of pear, white cherry, slate, bee pollen and white flowers. On the palate the wine is medium-full, filigreed and long, with lovely intensity of flavor, a vibrant personality, but a pretty laid back and round finish. Perhaps the wine will show more grip and snap when it has had a chance to recover more fully from its bottling. 2016-2035." (Mar/Apr 2016)

92+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 Karthäuserhofberg Spätlese was my favorite wine of the roster here, though it is a slightly bigger style of Spätlese. The wine’s numbers are seventy grams per liter of residual sugar and 7.8 grams per liter of acidity and the bouquet jumps from the glass in a blend of apple, white cherries, bee pollen, apple blossoms and a fine undertow of salty slate minerality. On the palate the wine is medium-full, pure and nicely filigreed, with a lovely lightness of step, fine focus and grip and a long, nascently complex and ethereal finish. This is a very pretty Spätlese in the making. 2016-2040." (Mar/Apr 2016)

On the palate the wine is medium-full, crisp and nicely round and accessible on the attack, with a solid core and good length on the fairly gentle finish. This wine finished at 7.9 grams per liter of acidity and 7.7 grams per liter of residual sugar, after having been de-acidified by one gram per liter. It is a bright and pleasant wine that will drink well from the outset. 2016-2030." (Mar/Apr 2016)

Not reviewed; 2014 vintage rated 91 points by David Schildknecht (Vinous): "Like its Kloster Fürstental counterpart, this weighs in at a mere 10.7% alcohol, although it harbors a few more grams of residual sugar (for a total of just seven). Piquancy of walnut lends invigorating counterpoint to tart-edged but refreshingly juicy apple and rhubarb on a silky-textured and delightfully delicate yet palpably extract-rich palate. The mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish here really grips. Drink: 2016-2020."

99 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "How does one go up the ladder from the superb Morstein Auslese? I really have no idea how this was done, but Klaus-Peter has managed to do so and the 2015 Goldkapsel from the Morstein is utterly brilliant wine. The magically pure and complex nose offers up a constellation of tangerine, lime, simply scintillating minerality, citrus zest, gentle hone tones, orange oil and just a whisper of the leather that will come with extended bottle age. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and dancing, with a creamy core of fruit, electric acidity and simply perfect focus and balance on the very, very long, complex and tensile finish. It is hard to imagine a wine of this concentration and purity, without any botrytis whatsoever, but there is no noble rot here at all, just desiccated berries from Passerillage! 2023-2065+." The sweet peach preserve fruit and salty minerality are very well balanced: more elegant than rich and tantalizingly light on the palate. 98 points Joel B. Payne (Vinous): "[$1,044 list] Rich golden yellow. Exuberant aromas of caramelized peach, quince preserves and oyster shell on a bed of honeyed botrytis. Incredibly dense on the palate, with its creamy richness perfectly paired with an almost salty tangy quality, this is a breathtaking Riesling. In spite of its depth and weight, this Trockenbeerenauslese is still delicate and elegant. Complex and spicy on the deliriously long finish, this is without any doubt the best noble late harvest offering of the vintage in Germany. Drink: 2020-2050. (Mar 2015)"

98 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "There were only fifty-four liters produced of Morstein TBA in 2013, but this magical elixir will be worth a very special search to find in the market! The brilliant bouquet is a blend of fresh apricot, orange, honey, pineapple, stunningly complex minerality, citrus zest and a dollop of new leather in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with brilliant focus and balance, a bottomless core, brisk acids and stunning length and grip on the celestial finish. Sheer brilliance! 2017-2075. (Mar/Apr 2014)"

95 points Stephen Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2013 Westhofen Morstein Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese offers a clear, still fresh and precise aroma of mineral-flavored stone fruits, orange skins, grapefruit, potted ginger and oriental spices. The attack of this very sweet and concentrated 7.5% alcohol TBA is really racy as the firm structure and the finish is nicely grippy. The tension-filled and piquant aftertaste will make this a very delicate and stimulating noble sweet in 10 or 20 years. The aging potential is surely terrific. (May 2015)"

+ Terry Theise: "(no discernable sweetness). The wine makes me think more than anything of Michi’s 'Tradition' bottlings at Schloss Gobelsburg; it’s atmospheric and inferential; analog, soulful, more pealing, bell-like overtones, more poetic and secretive. Even in its animation it shows repose, and a complexity you don’t subdue, but simply and calmly allow it to guide you to the mystery... This wine is remarkable, much more than just a curio, and I think more than an homage or a fascinating story. It’s bone dry but has such mineral density it avoids any shrillness or sourness. It’s an exegesis of crushed rocks, an entire quarry of flavor and energy with barely a fruit or a flower in sight--though if a hyacinth married a slate-pit they might produce this. A ne plus ultra of its type--if it even has a 'type'--and with a commanding gorgeous ferocity that doesn’t flash the tiniest of smiles, but you’re overcome anyway."

WHWC Staff Notes: "Werner Näkel's entry-level Spätburgunder is a classic study in terroir. His vineyard holdings cover a wide variety of soil compositions, each of which seems to express itself in orderly progression in this wine. The veins of red sandstone that run through some of his grand cru sites are reflected in a dusty, iron-rich quality on the mid-palate, while the blue and black slate soils that predominate in the region imbue the wine with a taut, smoky, mineral structure. The steep, south-facing slopes of the Ahr Valley are evident in the wine's concentrated red fruit aromas of currant and Bing cherry, but at this early stage in its development, the palate's fruit profile is only just starting to come together, and it will surely benefit from 3 to 5 years of cellaring." - Andrew Kitz

90 points Joel B. Payne (International Wine Cellar): "Inky ruby. Lively red berry and wild spice aromas are lifted by a whiff of anise. Taut and linear, this pinot noir gains flesh on the palate, offering fresh raspberry and bitter cherry flavors with a touch of succulent herbs. Finishes with lingering spiciness. (Jan/Feb 2014)"

Producer notes: "This wine is affected by the aroma of dark cherries, wild blackberries and ripe raspberries and blueberries. This intense fruit is underlined by a soft roasted aroma and violets. It is full bodied and long with an elegant tannin structure. Food pairing: Braised and grilled meat, game and ripe cheeses. The name Pfarrwingert goes back to the Catholic church of Dernau, that is still land owner in this land parcel. The especially favourable southwards exposition, the slope angle and the soil that is easily to warm up cause an advantageous micro climate in this vineyard. Old vines, meticulous vineyard work, consistent yield reduction and careful hand-picking. Harvest of the fully ripe grapes end October 2011 with a yield of 25 hl/ha, gentle treatment, ageing in barrique for about 16 months (70% new oak) and stored for 6 months in the bottle. The high percentage of greywacke and slate is partially decomposed to a sand stone like structure. Pfarrwingert creates extremely aromatic fruity and subtle wines with an elegant flavour. Alcohol 14.0%. Sugar 0.0g/l. Acidity 5.4g/l."

Joel B. Payne (International Wine Cellar): "Deep garnet. Zesty blackcurrant, dried cherry, fresh flowers and orange pith on the nose. Firm on the palate, with red berry flavors showing a refreshing liveliness. Supple and almost sweet, with a bright, persistent finish. (Jan/Feb 2014)"

Producer notes: "Complex bouquet that is affected by blackberries, black current, morello cherry and chocolate with a hint of liquorice. Complex and long mouthfeel with harmonious tannin. Food pairing: Braised and grilled meat, game and ripe cheeses. The name Sonnenberg (sunny mountain) speaks for itself. Because of its southern exposition and favourable slope angle it profits high sun intensity and advantageous microclimate. The soil is a stony conglomerate of slate and greywacke with a high percentage of loess and loam. The Pinot Noir of this vineyard site is voluminous and full bodied maintaining a fruity elegant character because of the slate contingent. Aged in barrique for about 16 months (70% new oak). Alcohol 14.0%. Sugar 0.1g/l. Acidity 5.4g/l."

Producer notes: "Bernkasteler Lay is another small top-class terroir in Bernkastel, whose reputation is overshadowed somewhat by the better-known Doktor site. Here we own very good quality plots in the heart of the site with extremely old vines. The slate here is decomposed and fine, regularly producing excellent quality, very ripe harvests with extremely elegant and filigree fruit. The bottles are colour coded according to the taste category of the wine. The dry wines have a white cap."

Stephan Reinhardt (The Finest Wines of Germany): "Molitor started with 10 acres (4ha) of vines; now he owns 100 acres (40ha)--one of the alrgest family-run wine estates in the Mosel. He owns vineyards in 18 sites between Brauneberg and Traben-Trabach, predominantly located in the best and steepest sites of the Middle Mosel: Brauneberger Klostergarten, Bernkasteler Lay, Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and its continuation Zeltingener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten, and Erdener Treppchen... Due to the high diversity of sites, slate types, and microclimates, as well as the production of several predicates in dry (white capsule), off-dry (green), and sweet (gold), the wines of Markus Molitor represent every variation of Mosel wine. Each year he selects and bottles at least 50 different wines; in vintages with a lot of botrytis, even more... Molitor's wines are extraorinary: deep, rich and well structured, but not lacking freshness, grace, or the ability to inspire. A word of advice, however: by al means buy the newest vintages, but always appreciate the mature ones. (2012)"

WHWC Staff Notes: "Molitor's dry Kabinett Domprobst is a classic example of one the finest sites in Graach. The deep slate soils come through in spades with aromas of wet stone, petrol, spice, and walnut. Subtle fruit nuances of peach skin and strawberry lend a charming element to the otherwise zesty profile. The palate is much more mineral with flavors of flint and gunsmoke dominating, while slightly austere citrus pith hints at what might emerge with time. While Molitor's personal style is known for its power and drive, this is a classic study in terroir and will take another 5 to 7 years to reach its peak, after which it will perform wonderfully for another 15 years or so." — Andrew Kitz (2/2/17)

93 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "Provided with tropical aromas such as passion fruits, the dry 2015 Riesling Graacher Domprobst Kabinett (White Capsule) is deep, ripe, intense and smoky on the nose and is very pure and fascinating in its terroir expression: Domprobst Riesling on the rocks! Full-bodied, round and rich, it is expressive, perfectly balanced and gorgeously lush on the palate and also shows stimulating grip and a lot of salt followed by perfectly ripe fruit flavors in the long, complex finish. It's a grand cru par excellence that comes along with just 10.4 % of alcohol." (Feb 2017)

Producer notes: "Graacher Himmelreich is not as steep in all sections as the Domprobst site, but to some extent with even richer slate soils, the site produces very racy, crisp Riesling grapes with firm body and particularly good for dry or off-dry wines. This is our oldest red wine vineyard, producing Pinot Noir with lots of fire and power, needing a long time to mature and develop. The bottles are colour coded according to the taste category of the wine. The off-dry wines have a grey-green color like slate."

WHWC Staff Notes: "While Molitor's dry wines are undeniably thrilling, his naturally sweet and botrytized wines are perhaps the most enthralling of his lineup. The Gold Cap Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese comes in at a mere 7.5% abv, so the residual sugars are quite prominent. However, the wine carries this weight with impeccable grace and poise. Unctuous and heady aromas of poached pear, honeydew melon, and elderflower ride atop the slightest hints of classic Mosel slate. The Wehlen vineyards are notoriously ripe sites, which is amply evident in the flavors of red Gala apple, pineapple, and tangerine. There is also an underlying spicy component reminiscient of clove, which again speaks to the terroir. While the sugars are prominent, the ultra-fine, filligreed acid provides a striking and beguiling balance that keeps the flavor profile from going overboard. Make no mistake — as expressive as this wine is now, it is still primary. At least 5 more years are required to bring about its fullest complexity and it will shine for at least two decades." — Andrew Kitz (2/4/17)

Importer notes: "This exceptionally rare bottling of Auslese offers rich tropical notes in the nose, mixed with notes of blue slate. On the palate it is rich, elegant, and incredibly fine. Its tropical nose is reflected in the flavors found on the palate, with grapefruit, pineapple, cherry, lilac, tangelo, bees wax, but these flavors are in no way heavy handed. ++ Terry Theise: "(discernable but not obtrusive sweetness). Great Rieslaner can leave you lost for words, as this one did. And you need a lot of words to even start describing a wine as intricate and profound as this. Let’s say power, mentholated brilliance, elegance, seems drier than its brothers among the Rieslings, and super-salty on the back palate."

Producer notes: "This hardy Rieslaner is compelling with plenty of clear ripe green apple fruitiness and herbal notes typical of the grape variety, such as eucalyptus, mint and green leaves. Residual sugar: 80.1 g/L. Alcohol 11.0%."

+ Terry Theise: "(discernable but not obtrusive sweetness). Fantastic complex aroma, grain and green and pêche-de-vigne; the palate is maniacally zippy and spicy; verbena and wintergreen; sweet grain, a racy Kabinett."

2014 vintage rated 92 points by David Schildknecht (Vinous): "With nearly double the residual sugar of its Mussbach Feinherb counterpart, this bottling is unabashedly sweet. Aromas of orange blossom, decadent peony, muskmelon and blood orange anticipate a lush and richly ripe palate impression, which is reinforced by a glossy texture. But, happily, pink grapefruit and lime lend bright juiciness to enliven the proceedings, which culminate in an effusively, colorfully fruity and lusciously sustained finish. 'A Gimmeldinger [Riesling] can by nature put away more residual sugar than a Mussbacher,' observes Franzen, who also thinks that this wine has the greater future."

91 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "I learned on this trip that the superb estate Riesling from Weingut Egon Müller includes a sizable chunk of Saarburger Rausch in its blend, as the estate has a fine parcel in this vineyard that they choose not to bottle on its own. While part of my heart yearns to taste a Rausch bottling from Egon Müller, the realization that a significant percentage of the blend of this fine villages level bottling is from such a grand cru vineyard makes this wine even more attractive. The 2015 is a stellar wine, offering up a pure and classy nose of apple, lime, a touch of cress, a beautiful base of slate and a gentle topnote of petrol. On the palate the wine is fullish, pure and vibrant, with lovely nascent complexity, bright, zesty acids and outstanding focus and grip on the very promising finish. This will need a few years in the cellar to develop some of its secondary layers of complexity and should age long and gracefully. 2019-2040. (Mar/Apr 2016)"

Importer notes: "The single vineyard Odinstal is a monopole, located 350 meters above sea level making it among the highest in the Pfalz. In this unique micro-climate there is also great advantage for producing dry wines that are physiologically ripe, intensely aromatic and concentrated without being too alcoholic or deficient in acidity. With four diverse and distinctive soil compositions, this terroir range defines what Odinstal is all about. Buntsandstein is the classic soil type in the Pfalz having a high drainage and poor nutrient holding capabilities. Due to its porous nature, it produces very floral and aromatic wines. Staying in the tradition of the Pfalz style, the wines are dry and elegant. The vineyards have been farmed organically since the early 1990s and DEMETER certified biodynamic since 2006."

Importer notes: "The Estate Riesling trocken (dry) is 6-to-7g RS and a brisk 8g of acid, so it feels quite dry on the palate, but also succulent and lively with typical earthy Pfalz fruit and excellent acidity. It is sourced mostly from the Nussriegel vineyard surrounding the family house, a mix of limestone and loam that is being transitioned to organic viiculture. The nose of the wine is wild and exotic, almost Muscatty, with a wonderful fruit quality throughout. Pair this zesty, food-flexible dry Riesling with a huge variety of things: white meats, seafood, cutlets, middle-eastern dishes, hearty salads and veggies.... the list goes on and on!"

Without question, the 2015 vintage in Germany is the finest in at least the past forty years. An impeccable Indian summer led to leisurely harvesting and perfect balance at all levels of ripeness, particularly for the Prädikat wines of the Mosel Valley. This legendary terroir is best interpreted by the incomparable Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm (aka J.J. Prüm). This is the hallmark producer of the Mosel, the standard-bearer of quality for the region. Though the estate is only a century old, the Prüm family have been prominent in Mosel winemaking for over 400 years. Today, Dr. Manfred Prüm and his daughter Dr. Katharina Prüm craft Riesling wines specifically built for aging and evolution, and theirs are renowned for being the most long-lived of all.

95 points Wine Spectator: "[$114 list] This has flavors of peach pie and apricot tart that are well-honeyed and filled with creamy unctuousness. Pastry notes show midpalate, with a finish that offers savory richness and plenty of minerally accents. A pure and powerful style. Best from 2018 through 2038. 40 cases imported. (3/31/17)"

95 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The gold-capsuled 2014 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese GK (AP #18) represents a botrytis selection and offers highly delicate fruit and flinty-slate aromas, where tropical fruit aromas mingle with wet stone flavors. The attack on the palate is racy and piquant; the wine is complex and very pure, highly elegant and finesse-full, yet intense and concentrated, with ripe pineapple flavors and a pure, salty, very mineral finish. This is highly delicate Riesling with a complex terroir expression. Drink: 2020-2040." (March 2016)

95 points David Schildknecht (Vinous): "This non-auction gold-capsule bottling delivers a multifaceted nose featuring candied lime peel, apple and quince jellies, heliotrope and an intriguing meld of yeasty stale bread, florally honeyed and subtly truffly manifestations of botrytis. The creamy, expansive palate reprises all of the aforementioned elements, but also introduces generous parallel juiciness of fresh apple and lime. Displaying wonderful lift and delicacy, the lusciously lingering finish is transparent to stony, crystalline and floral nuances. Drink: 2026-2048." (Nov 2016)

96 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 vintage was the 'third leaf' for this replanted parcel, and as many readers may already know, the fruit from three-year-old vines is usually the finest from young vines until they reach their twentieth birthday, as in year three, they have not yet attained the vigor to produce abundantly and their energy gets channeled into a more modest quantity of bunches. The wine is stunning, offering up a pure and vibrant nose of pear, white cherry, superbly mineral slate tones, a bit of vanilla bean and a topnote of orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and very filigreed, with a lovely core, ripe, brisk acids and stunning length and grip on the youthfully complex finish. Breathtaking! 2023-2080." The bouquet is a lovely mélange of fresh orange, apple, plenty of slate, petrol, citrus zest and a distinctively smoky topnote. ON the palate the wine is deep, medium-full and far more reserved on the palate than the nose suggests (this is the Domprobst after all!), with a fine core, outstanding filigree already in evidence, snappy, perfectly integrated acids and a very long, pure and dancing finish. This too will be tremendous. 2022-2050. (Mar/Apr 2016)"

95+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "...there is no doubting that the very finest Grosses Gewächs in this stellar lineup this year is this magical Felseneck. The young, very complex and simply brilliant bouquet is a blend of tart orange, pink grapefruit, petrol, kaleidoscopic slate nuances, wild yeasts, lemongrass, smoke, citrus peel and dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and supremely elegant, with a rock solid core, ripe, perfectly integrated acids, laser-like focus and a very, very long, refined and perfectly balanced finish. A stunning wine in the making! 2022-2055+. (Mar/Apr 2014)"

95 points Stephen Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "Pale lime green in color, the 2013 Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Grosses Gewachs is very reductive with brilliant and intense lime peel aromas, crushed rocks and smoky mineral notes that come together on an overall very spicy, elegant and promising nose. The palate is piquant and juicy, enormously mineral and long. This wine is a quite rich and full-bodied, focused and elegant with a great length and complexity. It also has huge aging potential. The bouquet offers up a youthfully complex and very precise nose of grapefruit, lemon, smoke, a complex base of slate, wild yeasts, citrus peel and a topnote of lemongrass. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and utterly refined, with a superb core, great focus and grip, ripe, racy acids and stunning length on the perfectly balanced and tour de force finish. Great, great juice. 2023-2060. (Mar/Apr 2015)"

Very intense and rich on the palate this is a powerful and very mineral structured wine of expression and complexity, with more finesse still to come. Drink: 2018-2026. (Oct 2014)"

94 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2013 Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs from the estate is all made from old vines, with the range from forty-five to sixty-plus years of age, with the very steepest section of the vineyard providing the fruit for the GG. The red slate soils of this vineyard give a lovely mineral drive to the wine in 2013, as it jumps from the glass in a beautiful blend of grapefruit, tart orange, petrol, wild yeasts, a gorgeous base of slate, a touch of lavender, smokiness and a bit of lime leaf in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in 2013, with excellent mid-palate depth, crisp, ripe acids and outstanding length and grip on the perfectly focused finish. 94+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2015 Felsenberg GG is an outstanding young wine. The wine comes in at around 12.5 percent alcohol and offers up a refined and very classy bouquet of grapefruit, white cherries, wild yeasts, dried flowers, a lovely base of minerality, petrol and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nascently complex and just beautifully balanced, with a fine core, superb focus and grip and a very, very long, classic and refined finish. Just a beautiful wine in the making. 2022-2060. (Mar/Apr 2016)"

94 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2015 Felsenberg Riesling GG is from volcanic soils and a more narrow part of the valley where the fog stays longer than in Bockenau or Monzingen, so that the smoother skin leads Tim to an earlier picking. The wine opens very precise and flinty, but also fruity, with some yeasty flavors. It seems to be darker or more smoky flavored than the corresponding Kupfergrube. On the palate, this is a rich, very concentrated, precise and piquant Riesling with a long and intense aftertaste. The wine combines its ripe apple flavors with flinty aromas and shows great grip and salinity. The grapes were picked at lower potential alcohol levels than five years ago, but they were still ripe and rich enough for another impressive grand cru from Tim Fröhlich. Drink: 2020-2030" (Dec 2016)

94 points Wine Spectator: "[$110 list] Very pure and crisp, but with an underlying creaminess to the explosively fruity flavors of red peach, apple, pear and ripe citrus. Saline notes show midpalate, accented by white pepper hints. The spicy finish is long and lush. The essence of Riesling, in a dry style. Drink now through 2026. 400 cases made. (11/9/16)"

94 points Stephen Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2013 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs is pale lime green in color and quite reductive as always at this stage. However, the wine from Schlossböckelheim cru is extremely precise and focused, with lime perfume and crushed rocks on the nose. Powerful, intense and mineral on the palate, it gives sweet and juicy citrus fruit and well-integrated acidity into a rich yet focused body of melting stones. Very aromatic in the aftertaste, this is a full-bodied and persistent wine of great potential and one of the best dry German Rieslings of the vintage. Drink: 2016-2024. (Oct 2014)"

93+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2013 Felsenberg Grosses Gewächs bottling is outstanding, with the volcanic soils here really giving this wine a minerally-defined personality in this high extract vintage. The deep and reserved nose delivers a mineral bath of tart orange, grapefruit, petrol, wild yeasts, plenty of smokiness and a kaleidoscope of porphyry minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and quite a bit more reserved out of the blocks than the preceding GGs, with a great core, superb structure, brisk, nicely buffered acids and excellent length and grip on the still very primary finish. This will be stellar, but will need a few more years in the cellar before it starts to blossom. 2022-2050+. (Mar/Apr 2014)"

91 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The Vulkangestein Riesling Trocken bottling hails all from younger vines in the two grand cru vineyards of Felsenberg and Stromberg, which are the volcanic soil grand crus in the winery’s lineup. This is really outstanding in 2014, jumping from the glass in a blaze of grapefruit, lemon, stony minerality, wild yeasts, a touch of smokiness and a vibrant topnote of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and racy, with a rock solid core, superb focus and grip, nascent complexity and a very long, poised and transparent finish. This could use a year or two (at least) in the cellar to really blossom and show some of its secondary layers, but it is outstanding wine and one of the best values to be found in the vintage. 2016-2035. WHWC Staff Notes: "This overachieving Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) is a multi-dimensional chameleon of a wine. The aromatic profile is endowed with unctuous tropical fruits and white flowers, with slight nuances of white pepper. Given the fruit profile, one would expect a weighty viscosity on the palate, but the wine proves to be incredibly lively and nearly weightless on both the entry and finish. The mid-palate displays a brief rush of glycerol from the ripeness of the fruit, bolstered by well-hidden but present acidity. The balance on this wine is exceptional, and the palate is just understated enough to suggest that another 3 to 4 years of evolution would bring out its full character." -Andrew Kitz, 11/3/15

89 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "As I noted last year, the 2013 Weissburgunder was made without malo and the 2014 follows in its footsteps. The wine is raised in a mix of stainless steel tanks, old fuder and fifteen year-old barriques and offers up a lovely nose of apple, peach, spring flowers and just a hint of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and bouncy, with a good core, fine length and grip and lovely focus on the bouncy finish. Good juice, with a bit more lift on the backend from its non-malo profile in the last couple of years. 2015-2025. (Mar/Apr 2015)"

91 points Wine Spectator: "An opulent spätlese, with a lush, mouthcoating texture framing its peach, sweet corn, vanilla pastry and lemon notes. It's firm in structure, with the acidity emerging on the finish. Tasty now, this will be a beauty in a decade. Drink now through 2020. 1,000 cases made." (4/30/06)

WHWC Staff Notes: "At 12 years old, this wine performs much like the other Schönborn wines I've tasted from the 2004 vintage. It displays a bright gold color with no indications of oxidation. The nose is prototypical of aged Riesling from a ripe site with opulent, evolved aromas of apricot, mango, vibrant petrol, and hints of honeyed butterscotch. The wine's structure is firmly intact, with a rich, sleek extract balanced on the prominent acidity and displaying flavors of peach, white cherry, tropical fruits and a subtle, saline minerality. This is what aged Riesling should be." — Andrew Kitz (1/6/17)

Importer notes: "The Schneiders plant a variety of French and German clones in their vineyards to simply wonderful effect. They never filter their Pinot Noir wines. This is a poster child for Baden Spätburgunder -- mid-weight and polished with the faintest hint of tannin and an ineffably lovely aromatic quality that carries through seamlessly from nose to palate. (+)++ Terry Theise: "(discernable but not obtrusive sweetness). It has some of that para-slate ethereality of the high terraces in Uerziger Würzgarten; it’s in fact the heart of the steep sections to the left of Rotlay, which shows in a severe structural backbone beneath an avalanche of silvery fruit, and all in gloriously high relief, resolving into a calm slatey finish that feels immortal. The taste of Time and Truth--nothing less."

Not yet reviewed; 2014 vintage rated 93 points by Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2014 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * displays a pretty "Bugundian" bouquet with some discreet new oak aromas framing the ripe and fine Riesling flavors. However, this is another style at the first sight, but the complexity, purity and finesse are also evident and will come out even better in 6-8 years. +++ Terry Theise: "(sweetness important of itself). Yes. A gorgeous, pure, lavishly generous but diligently focused masterpiece; molten silver, possibly even deeper than 'terroir;' it seems to encompass the gray March hills, the vines on their posts, the limpid green-gray river, the candid northern light; is it even wine any more? WHWC Staff Notes: "Theo Minges makes his Feinherb Scheurebe with a barely discernable level of residual sugar, which serves to impart body more than any actual flavor component. This is a lovely entry-level wine with outsized complexity for its price point. Classic Scheurebe aromas of cassis and fig are joined by fresh strawberry blossom and peach skin. Electric acidity masks the initial flavors, but with time it settles out into a grapefruit-driven profile with hints of mint and kiwi. A good wine in any year, but the 2015 vintage produced a great iteration. This is your ideal feast wine, as it will pair well with nearly anything on the table." - Andrew Kitz, 11/11/16

Producer notes: "Riesling from steep slopes on the Saar and Mosel with a dry taste profile. Various Devonian slate soils, along with rhyolite and graywacke. The magical mineral extract demonstrates the virtues of the Saar: an early drinking wine from rather younger vines, up to 30 years old, which define the bright minerality of the slate and connect with the animated, ripe acidity. This is a wine with moderate alcohol, seductive fruit, and an almost never-ending easy-drinking quality. With all the finesse of Schiefer Riesling, it also has--along with its mineral components--aromas of quince, apricot, and greengage, which recall the texture of a ripe Sauvignon blanc. This pairs wonderfully to light summer dishes. A prototype Saar Riesling: authentic, mineral, racy, and precise!"

This is a delicate but still very young Spätlese that was kept on the full lees for eight months and bottled in April. 94 points Stephen Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "At this early stage, the citrus colored 2013 Forster Ungeheuer Riesling trocken GG (with lime green reflections) seems to be von Winning's most impressive Riesling of the vintage. Intense, ripe and piquant fruit aromas of limes and grapefruit on the nose lead to a very juicy and salty palate where an almost perfect amalgam of minerals and fruit juice gives a very elegantly structured, medium to full-bodied wine. Then comes a delicious finish followed by a persistent and piquant length. This is a great, bright and energetic wine, whereas the Pechstein and Kirchenstück are still very closed at the moment. (Oct 2014)"

93 points Fine Wine Review: "The Ungeheuer GG has peach aromas. The mouth is long, leesy, and pure with deep minerality and lemony fruit. The wine shows very good acidity. (4/7/15)"

91 points Joel B. Payne (Vinous): "[$110 list] Tropical fruit, persimmon and lemon oil on the nose. Intense, full-bodied papaya fruit is highlighted by flinty minerality. Rich and concentrated but not at all heavy on the finish. A bit closed today when compared to the Kieselberg, but holds out excellent potential. Drink: 2015-2022. (Mar 2015)"

Terry Theise: "SOMMELIER ALERT! And yet another entirely different way for Riesling to be great; this is like a liquefied sea-salt caramel, voluminous and muscular and stocky, yet still classy and even glossy, and so ripe and juicy as to suggest sweetness that’s actually not there, but this is overwhelmingly seductive and convincing."

92-94 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2015 Deidesheimer Langenmorgen Riesling Trocken GG is deep and dusty, with its coolish and lemony fruit flavors; this is less fruit intense than the other 2015 von Winning Riesling crus from Deidesheim. Crushed stone flavors intermix with lemon juice and lead to a full-bodied, very intense and elegant palate. The wine has a nice mineral grip and a citrusy piquancy. The Langenmorgen has the freshness and tension you could eventually miss in many other 2015s from the Mittelhaardt. So if you prefer a rather fresh and coolish style, with a vivacious acidity and stimulating purity, the Langenmorgen is a serious candidate to satisfy your passions. Drink: 2016-2025. (Aug 2016)"

93+ points Fine Wine Review: "Von Winning has a truly outstanding quartet of GG’s from Deidesheim. In a vintage where terroir is not especially transparent at this stage, von Winning’s wines are each different. The Langenmorgen features fragrant apricot aromas. The mouth is medium-weight with density and a bit of succulence, plus purity to its intense, long, apricot fruit. This potentially can develop into a great wine. (9/24/16)"

++ Terry Theise: "(no discernable sweetness). SOMMELIER ALERT! It’s the nerd among the 'GGs' of Deidesheim, and it’s my personal favorite; the stoniest and most focused, complex and digital; it pulls you in, it’s introverted and numinous and insanely flowery, sous bois, thinly stony like what you skip on the surface of a pond. Chinese 5-spice comes on. How does wine do this, refer to four different families of flavor within one perfect structure?"

90 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2015 Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten Riesling Trocken offers a coolish, clear and very precise bouquet; there are stony and leafy flavors intertwined with white stone fruit and ripe lemon aromas. Dry, medium-bodied, very elegant and nicely piquant on the palate, this is a tightly woven, very well focused and perfectly balanced Riesling. It is aromatics and juicy with stone fruit, passion fruit and mango flavors in the persistent, stimulatingly salty finish. It's a pleasure to drink this wine today, but it will certainly benefit from further bottle aging. Drink: 2017-2023. (Aug 2016)"

+ Terry Theise: "(no discernable sweetness). Until Von Winning I don’t think anyone knew the potential of this upslope vineyard in Deidesheim. It’s an amazing value considering what it offers for the pittance it ciosts; wry, grainy and excellent, open-armed and terroiré, but terroir detached from 'mineral,': more ginger, guava and pineapple; hints at woodiness and resolves into a suave finish of pink peppercorns."

96 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "[$140 list] Crushed stones with a dash of lemon juice on the clear, precise, fresh and concentrated nose of the 2014 Forster Kirchenstück Riesling trocken GG lead to a full-bodied, intense, pure, very clear and salty wine with discreet power but great length and finesse. This is purity in its most complex and elegant expression. There is no richness of fruit and no alcohol that tries to impress you; everything here is terroir and subtle winemaking. The wine is cool and almost delicate, and much fresher and stimulating than a Kirchenstück used to be. This von Winning was bottled with less than 12% alcohol and one can surely discuss if a great Kirchenstück needs to have 13% or more of alcohol. Drink: 2019-2028. (Oct 2014)"

93 points David Schildknecht (Vinous): "There is all of the decadent, musky, exotic floral perfume here--not to mention almost overripe peachiness - one could conjure up under the rubric 'typical Kirchenstück.' But the dense, polished, glycerol-rich palate is nevertheless positively buoyant, and it’s a joy to experience the decadent ripeness and exotic complexity of Riesling from this site without having to put up with alcoholic weight or to sacrifice focus of flavors and genuine refreshment. What’s more, there is an alluring sense of shimmering interchange between flowers, fruits and crystalline mineral impingements in the long, soothingly succulent yet persistently stimulating finish. This is irresistible already, but its complexity and seductive appeal should both be compounded by time in bottle." (May 2016)

+(+) Terry Theise: "(no discernable sweetness). Taste it backwards. Note the finish first, its absurd complexity. Then back up to the resinous salts on the palate, and the shootsmoke, and then note how reticent the aromas are. It’s very early days for this, and if past is prologue my appraisal will have been far too conservative."

88 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "Made exclusively for Skurnik wines, the medium-dry 2015 Riesling Winnings opens lovely, clear and aromatic. It delivers a classic flinty/citrusy Buntsandstein aroma. The wine is charmingly round and elegant on the palate, piquant and juicy, as well as balanced. It reveals a clear, pretty intense and aromatic finish with a really stimulating grip. This Riesling is good to you and it is certainly not that sharp and racy as Riesling is so often described. Drink: 2016-2021. (Aug 2016)"

WHWC Staff Notes: "The folks at von Winning seem to be exceptionally proud of this wine, considering it's their most basic entry. But they have good reason. It offers everything you could possibly ask for in a Riesling, regardless of your stylistic preferences. An aromatic profile centered on salty, smoky, stony minerality also shows copious notes of grapefruit and lime, while the sappy mid-palate is foiled by electric acidity, which serves to accentuate the flavors of white peach and ginger. The residual sugar is hardly noticeable, unless you want to notice it. In that case, there it is. In short, this wine is whatever you want it to be." - Andrew Kitz

(+)++ Terry Theise: "(barely discernable sweetness). SOMMELIER ALERT! If you loved the 2014--and if you didn’t we need to send out a search party for your heart--you’ll find this one happy, happy, happy. Stronger than ’14, it’s also both drier and richer. And that’s as it should be; the pittance of sweetness it contains will rise and fall with the structure of each year’s wine, because that’s what sensible vintners do. The others just set up a formula and the wine 'has--XY--grams of sugar and zat’s zat.' Nuh-uh, not us. This will always be teasingly dry and teasingly sweet so you’ll keep changing your mind ('Wait, it’s a dry wine, no, it’s a sweet wine, no wait, it’s a dry wine again...') while the bottle empties faster than you could have imagined. I am very proud of this wine, because it was made in friendship and with a ton of heart, and it’s as smart and yummy as a wine can be."

90 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc I has an intense citrus color and opens with a deep and concentrated nose of ripe tropical fruits, lemon peel and crushed stones. Full-Bodied, intense and concentrated on the palate, this a powerful, firmly structured and elegant wine. It has an aromatic finish and fine tannins. The 2015 is pretty round and generous, already accessible to drink. It is rather a Graves than a Loire character, but the lingering fruit aromas are Pfalz at its best. Drink: 2016-2022. (Aug 2016)"

(+)++ Terry Theise: "It is certainly explosive and potentially great. Lemon and guava and sweated fennel; power, spice and focus; wild lavender mid-palate; herbal smoky finish. These amazing wines are patterned more on Grand Cru white Graves than on Loire wines — suppose Stephan wants to make his Pfalz version of Haut-Brion Blanc; it would be like him — but I find them seriously comparable to the very best from Styria, and I doubt anyone in Europe is making more compelling Sauv-Blanc at the moment. Catnip for hipsters!"

Producer notes: "Clear, pale gold color. Intense complex nose, dominated by fruity aromas, apricot and red vineyard peach fruit, with vegetal, herbaceous notes in the background. Dry, fresh and invigorating acidity, pronounced mineral notes, full-bodied, very well balanced, very long finish. Matured in stainless steel tank, traditional large and medium-sized German oak barrels. Sourced from the oldest and best parcels of the Höllberg Grand Cru vineyard, extremely stony gravel and clay soil, with sub-soil of porphyry rock."

92 points Wine Spectator: "[$38 list] This offers a crunchy and snappy essence to the crisp green apple, lemon-lime and citrus zest flavors. Open-textured midpalate, with notes of dried mango and guava that extend into the structured finish. Drink now through 2022. (3/31/17)"

92 points Anthony Dias Blue (The Tasting Panel): "[$38 list] Smooth and lush with juicy apple fruit and minerals; elegant and tangy with dry but rounded style; silky and refined, long and balanced. (Jan/Feb 2017)"

90 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The bright citrus-colored 2015 Kiedrich Riesling Trocken has a very concentrated, but again reductive and aromatically discreet nose, with a good mineral background. Medium to full-bodied, piquant and salty on the palate, this is a dense and pretty expressive Riesling with a ripe and concentrated, almost lush fruit texture. The finish is compact and well structured, indicating an excellent ageing potential. (Oct 2016)"

90 points Wine & Spirits: "[$38 list]As steely as the tank in which it fermented, this feels firm and youthful, an austere riesling in need of air. Give it a swirl in a decanter and it gets juicier, the lemon and lime fruit holding to a srisp, snappy line of acidity. It feels sleek and finely made. (Feb 2017)"

96 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "The 2015 Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese is rich and concentrated on the nose and offers clear, lemon-fresh and flinty aromas along with crushed slate and some tropical (passion fruit) flavors. Very deep and complex, indeed. Full-bodied, finessed and elegant, this is a mouthful of fine Gräfenberg Riesling that is impossible to spit. It is a perfectly balanced amalgam of melting minerals, ripe fruits, and a lush and elegant fruit texture. This is simply great Riesling made in Germany and surely from one of the finest grands crus, especially for this style of Riesling, which combines intellect with soul and stomach." (Oct 2016)

The 2015 Estate Riesling exemplifies everything that's wonderful about this vintage in Germany - tremendous versatility, expressive character, and a wide drinking window. A classic Mosel nose of petrol and flint lays over subtler aromas of pear, ginger, and graham cracker crust. At 11% abv, it's a medium-dry, highly filligreed, entry-level wine with flavors of lemon peel, slate, and ginger root dancing along to an uplifting finish. Drink now through 2022.

Gault & Millau Wine Guide: "The roots of the Prüm family can be traced back to the year 1156. This winery is currently run by Bert Selbach, in buildings erected here in 1924 by Dr. Weins-Prüm. Selbach owns good vineyard parcels in Erden, Ürzig, Wehlen and Graach. Dry (trocken) and off-dry (feinherb) wines only occupy a subordinate role. Selbach's aim is to create wines in the classical style--that is, wines which combine minerality, class, and elegance, but are never superficially sweet."

The 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the richest Spätlese in the range, but also the most reserved at this point. That the wine shows a Kabinett-like texture while coming in at 90g/L residual sugar and 7.5% alc./vol. is a testament to the deft touch that Bert Selbach brings to his wines. Elegance and precision are paramount. This is a youthful wine in which slate and petrol dominate, but the nose eventually gives up aromas ginger snap cookies, candied white flowers, and peach blossom. As mentioned above, the palate is centered around bright, balanced acid and extract with the mineral flavors again at the fore. Elements of red currant, pineapple, and orange zest round out the nascently complex profile. Drink 2018-2030.

Importer notes: "[$24.50 list] A blend of three different vineyards. The vines are at least 20 years old. Intense fruit. A superb example of what the modern Rheinhessen can do: rich intense fruit, less floral and more stone fruit, nectarine or peach, with a hearty earthiness that gives the wine both power and complexity. Entirely hand picked grapes all fermented in stainless steel. An example of why the Rheinhessen is the most improved and exciting wine region in Germany."
