Lovely array of dark fruit aromas with a subtle green vegetal note. In 2009, Reed leads with the green scents of whole cluster fermentation -- rhubarb and wintergreen -- and isn’t as filled-out as the Jensen (above). With air the fruit sweetens, knitting together those spicy aromas and the pronounced cranberry-like acidity. It’s reticent right now, needing some time in bottle before it fully spreads its wings. 94 points and 'Year's Best Pinot Noir,' Wine & Spirits: "The vines in the upper block of Ryan, rising to 2,500 feet, are just settling in. Jim Ryan, Calera’s vineyard manager, planted it in 1998 at a higher density than Calera’s other sites, most of which date to 1975. At first, this wine appears to be a big, extracted fruit bomb until, hours later, the tannins begin to breathe and the texture broadens, the fruit filling in the tannins on the sides of the mouth. A day later, the tannins and fruit have merged back into the middle of the wine, focused on dark, mineral intensity, on scents of smoke and earth, carrying plenty of extract within a pinot noir frame. While this may seem like a stylistic departure for Calera, it could also be read as a youthful interpretation of the Mount Harlan site. It’s formidable and delicious in any case, especially if decanted for roast duck. Best Buy. (Jun 2012)"

Still, while this is a full-on and very generous effort, the tannins are sophisticated and there is a lovely sense of underlying reserve. Drink: 2013+. (Oct 2011)"

Attractive aromas of fresh red and black fruits with a hint of vanilla cream and toasted oak improving in the glass over time. Medium-weight core of earthy plum and mixed berry fruit backed by mild firm tannins. A solid wine that lacks a little intensity and definition, but is well-made and perfectly fine for daily drinking. It isn't every day that we can offer a domestic Pinot Noir of superb pedigree at such a phenomenally low price. Thiis wine is as Burgundian in style as any California Pinot we've ever tasted. Founded in Oregon in 2005, Evening Land is the Pinot project of entrepreneurial prodigy Mark Tarlov. Along with partners (who include restaurant tycoon Danny Meyer and CEO of the James Beard Foundation Dorothy Cann Hamilton), Evening Land took the reins at the celebrated Seven Springs Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA and began making domestic Pinot from the same fruit that had served as a base for some of Oregon's luxury cuvees. Bringing Dominique Lafon (of Comte Lafon in Burgundy) on board to consult poised Evening Land Vineyards' to compete amongst the top winemakers in Oregon, some of whom have been on the scene for decades. And compete it did, perennially commanding high scores and critical acclaim. But Tarlov didn't stop there. Determined to amass a collection of the finest terroirs in the west coast, he began expanding southward, first purchasing vineyards in Sonoma and eventually on the Central Coast. Enter Sashi Moorman: head honcho winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards, and also at his two side projects Red Car and Piedrasassi. Moorman spent his journeyman days as a chef in New York City and then working as assistant winemaker to Adam Tolmach at Ojai Vineyards. Tarlov tapped Moorman to craft Evening Land's California cuvées thus rounding out the all-star ensemble.

Producer notes: "The 2009 California Blue Label Pinot Noir is sourced from three of California's best AVA's: Santa Rita Hills, Edna Valley, and Sonoma Coast. The richness from the Santa Hills Cuvee is balanced perfectly by the bright, acid driven cuvees from the Edna Valley and the supple fruit-forward wines from the Sonoma Coast. Oak plays its expected supportive role, and were it not for a bit of latter palate reluctance, this one might have reached even higher commendation. Withal, it is well worth a second glance. She then selects the more complex and structured blocks for this blend and the more fruit-forward blocks for Fogdog. It's a dramatic wine in 2009, with layers of flavor immediately implied in the scent -- ripe black cherries, the iodine of kelp and oak softening the minerality of the tannin. The wine's delicious richness becomes explosive with air, the potent structure bringing waves of salty tannins and blasts of red fruit. More than 100 barrel lots are evaluated three different times in blind tastings over the course of a year to discover lots that are unmistakably Gowan. Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Intensely fragrant with aromas of black cherries, black currants and blackberries with oak-driven accents. Oak-kissed array of dark fruit flavors, moderately rich and dense, wrapped in firm, mildly astringent tannins, finishing long and lush. A little withdrawn and needs more time to integrate the oak. The fruit is sourced from 21 distinct farming blocks within Hirsch Vineyards. The 2009 vintage was remarkable for its coolness and evenness of weather throughout the growing season. Aged 17 months in 35% new French oak barrels. Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. The nose evolves slowly in the glass, revealing enticing aromas of berry pie, spice and musk. Delicious essence of black plums and black raspberries with a wild, untamed quality. Relatively delicate on the palate, yet the fruit really pops and coats the mouth for at least a minute on the finish. Seamless, with undeniable charm. (2/23/12)"
