96 points Wine Spectator: "[$120 list] One of the more endowed 2009s, this is packed with dark smoldering cocoa, mesquite, tobacco and roasted fig notes, all inlaid with pure cassis and plum preserves fruit flavors. Long and authoritative on the finish, with singed vanilla bean and tar notes adding length and dimension. Best from 2015 through 2026. (2/29/12)"
96 points Rhone Report: "The 2009 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape had just been bottled at the time of the tasting but you wouldn't know it by tasting it. A blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and 20% assorted varieties, the wine delivers a superb aromatic display of kirsch and black cherry-like fruits to go with a solid dose of underlying meat, truffle, earth, and leather. Full-bodied and gorgeously concentrated through the middle, with fleshy, ripe fruit, good acidity, and an abundance of structure, this will ideally be left alone for 7-8 years and then consumed over the following two decades. (Sep 2011)"
94 points Robert Parker: "The 2009 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is reminiscent of their brilliant 1985. It will be one of the rare Beaucastels that is drinkable upon release. Made from this estate’s classic blend, it possesses soft tannins as well as a silky, open-knit seductiveness, a dense plum/purple color and a beautiful perfume of smoky Provencal herbs intermixed with grilled steak juices, garrigue, kirsch and blue as well as black fruits. The wine is full-bodied, unctuously textured, and silky smooth (the latter characteristic being somewhat atypical for a young Beaucastel). If it performs like the 1985, it will drink well young and continue to do so for 25 or more years. (Oct 2011)"
93 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(30% each of grenache and mourvedre and 10% each of counoise and syrah, with the balance spread across the other nine permitted varieties): Bright ruby. Perfumed, expressive aromas of red and dark berry preserves, smoky herbs and lavender, with a touch of licorice adding depth. Fleshy and supple in texture, offering intense black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors lifted by a spicy quality. Shows the richness of the vintage but carries no excess fat. The finish lingers with impressive tenacity and echoes the floral and smoke notes. (Jan/Feb 2012)"

93 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Vivid ruby. Aromas of cherry and boysenberry are complemented by notes of lavender and violet and lifted by a spicy topnote. At once rich and energetic, with very good depth to its sappy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. An intense spicy quality builds with air and carries through a very long, seductively sweet finish. (Jan/Feb 2012)"
93 points Rhone Report: "Coming all from the sandy soils in the La Guigasse lieu-dit and fermented with 100% whole-cluster, the 2009 Chapelle St. Theodoric Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Guigasse is a gorgeous Chateauneuf-du-Pape that is only a slight notch below the le Grand Pin. Taking the full evening to open up and show at its best, it delivers a perfumed, complex bouquet of kirsch, dried licorice, roasted garrigue, mineral, and lavender that flows to a full-bodied, seamlessly constructed wine. More elegant and finesse-driven than powerful, this nevertheless doesn.t lack for intensity and has superb concentration, excellent focus, and silky, lengthy finish. While showing well now, this should be even better with 3-4 years of bottle age and have upwards of two decades of overall longevity. (Jun 2012)"
92+ points Robert Parker: "[$70 list] The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Guigasse exhibits a dark ruby color along with a distinctive nose of roast meat, kirsch, black raspberries, lavender and licorice. Fuller-bodied, denser and firmer than Les Sablons, it represents a more virile, masculine style of wine. Layered and full, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring, and should age well for 15 years. (Oct 2011)"
92 points Wine Spectator: "A very perfumy, enticing style, with toasted anise, cardamom and black tea notes up front, followed by silky blackberry and raspberry fruit and a long, graphite-filled finish. Latent grip at the very end bodes well for the cellar. A new project from Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine de Cristia. Best from 2013 through 2022. 100 cases imported. (2/29/12)"

96 points Rhone Report: "[$90 list] A spectacular Châteauneuf-du-Pape and easily my favorite of the bunch, the 100% Grenache 2009 Chapelle St. Theodoric le Grand Pin comes all from the sandy soils of the le Grand Pin parcel (borders the Rayas lieu-dit) and is aged in larger, 600-Liter demi-muids. A joint venture with importer Peter Weygandt and vinified by Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine du Cristia, it displays a transparent ruby color that leads to an ethereal array of kirsch liqueur, white pepper, melted licorice, and sappy, floral aromas on the nose. Grenache at its finest, this full-bodied beauty is pure silk on the palate, showing an elegant, seamless, and yet weightless texture, perfect balance, and fine-grained, polished tannin that frames the lengthy, heady finish. It will drink well for upwards of two-decades and Grenache lovers should not miss this! (Jun 2012)"
95 points Robert Parker: "[$90 list] My highest score goes to the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Grand Pin. This impressive, deep ruby-colored, broad wine offers oodles of kirsch liqueur, black raspberry, sweet herb and meat broth-like characteristics, impressively sweet tannin, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning purity as well as length. Enjoy this 100% Grenache over the next 15+ years. This is a joint project between importer Peter Weygandt and Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine du Cristia. In essence, its aim is to showcase three totally different terroirs in Chateauneuf du Pape. The wines are made from biodynamically farmed parcels of sandy-based vineyards (Guigasse, Le Grand Pin and Les Sablons) and are bottled without fining or filtration. Les Sablons is aged in old, small oak barrels and the Guigasse and Grand Pin in larger 600-liter demi-muids. Yields for all three terroirs came in at an amazingly low 14 hectoliters per hectare (because of the drought in 2009 and the flowering problems with the Grenache in 2010). These are all remarkable efforts of extraordinary elegance and finesse that, stylistically, come closer to the styles one sees from nearby Chateau Rayas and further north, Domaine Charvin. (Oct 2011)"
94 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Full, bright ruby. Explosive, seductively perfumed scents of fresh red berries, incense and Asian spices. Sappy, palate-staining raspberry and cherry flavors show both power and vivacity, with notes of star anise and candied lavender coming up with air. Finishes silky, sweet and impressively long, the floral and cherry notes echoing. I underrated this wine last year. (Jan/Feb 2012)"
94 points Wine Spectator: "Very dark and lush, with loads of blueberry compote, açaí berry, Black Forest cake and mulled spice flavors all framed by roasted vanilla bean and melted licorice snap notes. Polished and dense through the finish, with nice latent grip for the cellar. A great combination of power and finesse. A new project from Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine de Cristia. Best from 2013 through 2024. 100 cases imported. (2/29/12)"

92 points Robert Parker: "[$50 list] Revealing the lightest ruby color, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Sablons offers an exquisitely fragrant, ethereal nose of licorice, kirsch, sandy, loamy soil and spice box. The remarkable perfume and expansive texture are amazing given its surprisingly light ruby color, but that’s Grenache at its finest. Because of the forwardness of the vintage, I suspect this wine will drink well during its first decade of life. (Oct 2011)"
92 points Rhone Report: "The lightest colored of the lineup and beautifully perfumed and complex, the 2009 Chapelle St. Theodoric Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Sablons is about as silky and elegant as Grenache gets. Coming from three different parcels of sandy soils and aged in neutral barrels, it delivers a sweet array of kirsch liqueur, toasted spice, garrigue, flowers, and dusty mineral like qualities on the nose. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, seamless wine that has no hard edges, a light, elegant texture, and a lengthy finish that has you looking for another glass. This might not have the depth or length of the other two releases, but it.s oh so drinkable and just straight up delicious. Drink this while you give the other two releases cellar time. (Jun 2012)"
91 points Wine Spectator: "Rich and mouthfilling, with a saturated core of blackberry, blueberry cobbler and cherry compote, all stitched with hints of plum eau de vie and red licorice. The finish is polished and creamy. A new project from Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine de Cristia. Drink now through 2021. (2/29/12)"

95 points Robert Parker: "[$75 list] The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (which tips the scales around 15% natural alcohol) is a great example of traditional Chateauneuf du Pape winemaking. A dense dark ruby color is followed by a sexy nose of raspberries, ground pepper, spice box, damp earth, kirsch and dark currants. Full-bodied, complex, elegant and already irresistible as the tannins have completely melted away, it can be drunk now and over the next 15+ years. (Oct 2011)"
94 points Wine Spectator: "This is very well-built, with a range of apple wood and toasted spice notes framing the core of crushed plum, blackberry and cassis. Dusty structure give a long and grippy feel through the finish, while a tarry edge emerges on the back end. More oomph than usual for this estate, but it's all inlaid with fresh acidity and minerality for balance. Best from 2014 through 2025. 500 cases imported. (2/29/12)"
94 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Ruby-red. Highly perfumed bouquet evokes candied red fruits, potpourri and allspice, with notes of licorice and white pepper adding complexity. Shows excellent clarity and power on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and cherry flavors and a sexy touch of candied flowers. The very pure, incisive finish lingers with impressive tenacity. (Jan/Feb 2012)"
94 points Rhone Report: "A great vintage for Laurent and showing beautifully from bottle, the 2009 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an energetic, lively red that possesses edgy minerality and rolled stone-like notes to go with licorice, garrigue, flowers, and a core of raspberry and blackberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced on the palate, this shows beautiful richness but stays remarkably light and airy without ever being heavy. Loads of fine tannin kicks in on the finish and it should be given 1-3 years of bottle age, and then consumed over the following decade or longer. (Sep 2011)"

99 points Robert Parker: "[$125 list] Also spectacular, but more evolved, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus-Ex Machina reveals classic Provencal scents of roasted herbs, lavender, charcuterie, blackberries, licorice, kirsch and bouquet garni. This super-complex, layered, multidimensional wine possesses remarkable purity and richness as well as silky tannins. One of the most open-knit and forward Deus-Ex Machinas made to date, it will be difficult to resist when young, and should age well for 20+ years. (Oct 2011)"
96-99 points Rhone Report: "Not yet bottled but tasted as a final blend, the 2009 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina, a blend of 60% tank aged Grenache and 40% barrel aged Mourvèdre, is more massive and structured than the La Combe des Fous, showing decadent cassis, blackberry, grilled meat, and touches of chocolate on its brooding, slightly backwards bouquet. Whereas the La Combe des Fous is perfumed and much more finesse driven, this is more in the style of a blockbuster, showing a powerful, full-bodied, rich feel, substantial underlying structure, and a very long, structured finish. This needs 2-3 years of bottle age, and should be incredibly long- lived. (Sep 2011)"
94 points Wine Spectator: "Dense but velvety, with gorgeous ganache and espresso giving way to dark fig, hoisin sauce and warm currant confiture. Lots of well-embedded charcoal and tobacco add cut and length to the hefty but driven finish. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Best from 2013 through 2024. 583 cases made. (11/15/11)"
94 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Glass-staining purple. Aromas and flavors of candied blueberry, boysenberry and licorice, with a sexy floral quality gaining power with air. Broad and extremely deep, with a velvety texture and mounting spiciness. Utterly seamless Chateauneuf with excellent finishing power and a lingering note of smoky minerality. (Jan/Feb 2012)"

94 points Robert Parker: "[$55 list] The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes reveals supple tannins, a velvety texture, good opulence and low acidity. The wine is full-bodied, less intense in the mid-palate than the 2010, and already complex and evolved. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15+ years. (Oct 2011)"
94 points Rhone Report: "The 2009 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 75% old vine Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the balance a mix of Cinsault, Mourvedre, and Vaccarese, with the Grenache seeing only tank, and the Syrah and Mourvedre components aged in larger oak barrels. Showing a similar profile to the straight Chateauneuf-du-Pape (it.s basically the same wine, just with older vines), yet with more girth and richness, the wine displays gorgeous kirsch, white chocolate, licorice, sweet spice, and flower oil-like qualities on the nose. This is followed by a full-bodied, brilliantly textured wine that has a seamless, downright sexy profile of ripe fruit, solid concentration, and fine tannin on the long finish. This beauty can be consumed now, or cellared for a decade. (Sep 2011)"
92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "[$55 list] Bright ruby. Ripe blackberry and cherry on the nose, with dark chocolate and licorice adding complexity. Deep, spice-accented cherry liqueur and bitter chocolate flavors are enlivened by a note of singed orange. Becomes brighter with air and finishes with excellent clarity, thrust and bite. (Jan/Feb 2012)"
91 points Wine Spectator: "[$55 list] Features perfumy aromatics, but still a bit tight, with an iron-bound core of cassis, raspberry and blackberry fruit, backed by graphite and black tea notes on the racy finish. Should unwind with modest cellaring. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Vaccarèse. Best from 2012 through 2021. 1,011 cases made. (11/15/11)"

93 points Wine Spectator: "[$76 list] This is a stunner, with all the dense, rich layers of raspberry, blackberry and boysenberry fruit the vintage typically delivers, laced with apple wood and licorice, but backed by extra graphite, black tea and ganache notes that sail through the superlong finish. Shows great density and balance. Best from 2015 through 2030. 265 cases made. (6/15/12)"
93 points Rhone Report: "Just bottled at the time of this tasting and much more serious and impressive is the 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Barberini. A blend of mainly Grenache but with a dash of Syrah, all aged in 45% new barrels, it is beautifully fruited and pure on the nose, showing copious blackberry and raspberry-like fruit characteristics to go with meat, saddle leather, spice, and licorice aromas. Just as good on the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied and brilliantly textured, with excellent balance, silky tannin, and a long classically styled, dry finish. It should continue to impress over the coming 12-15 years. (Sep 2011)"
92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "(60% grenache, 30% syrah and 10% mourvedre): Brilliant ruby. Pungent, expressive bouquet displays blackberry, boysenberry, cracked pepper and smoky mineral scents, with nuances of vanilla and licorice adding complexity. Broad and sweet but also spicy, with sappy dark berry preserve flavors and a sexy suggestion of candied flowers. Finishes sweet and smooth, with the spice and pepper notes repeating. (Jan/Feb 2012)"
91+ points Robert Parker: "The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Barberini is composed of 60% tank-aged Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, the latter two components aged in new oak barrels. This is a more modern-styled, backward Chateauneuf with some vanillin poking through. The wine’s dense purple color resembles a Bordeaux more than a southern Rhone. It is a 'love it or leave it' effort with completely different aromatic and flavor profiles than its siblings. With medium to full body, abundant tannin and impressive concentration, it will benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring and should keep for two decades. (Oct 2011)"

95 points Robert Parker: "A candidate for wine of the vintage, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (a tank-aged blend of 90% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault from 80+ year old vines) is a naked expression of Chateauneuf du Pape that is pure fruit and complexity. Its dense purple color is followed by aromas of melted licorice, charcuterie, Provencal herbs, black currants, roasted meat, plum sauce, seaweed and licorice. It is incredibly complex in both the aromatics and on the palate, full-bodied and super-rich with sweet tannin and low acidity. Enjoy it over the next 15+ years. (Oct 2011)"
94 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Vivid ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of red and dark berries, cherry and licorice. with slow-building spice and floral character. At once rich and lively, displaying very good clarity to its black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. Shows a seamless texture and finishes with excellent power, focus and floral-driven persistence. I underestimated this wine last year. (Jan/Feb 2012)"
94 points Rhone Report: "A traditional, muscular, and old school Chateauneuf, Bravay's 2009 Domaine de Ferrand Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a completely tank aged blend of 94% Grenache and the rest an assortment of varieties. It presents a fantastic, complex array of framboise and kirsch-like fruit to go with notions of garrigue, roasted meat, licorice, and spice, characteristics on the nose. Seriously structured and long on the palate, with plenty of sweet fruit, a thick, fleshy mid-palate, and a brilliant finish, it should be given 3-5 years in the cellar, and then consumed over the following decade or more. (Sep 2011)"
93 points Wine Spectator: "[$66 list] A lush, velvety style, with warm linzer torte and currant confiture aromas and flavors layered with perfumy toasted spice and fruitcake notes. Anise and cherries jubilee hang through the finish, with a tarry streak as well. Shows lovely mouthfeel and deceptive depth. Drink now through 2022. 250 cases imported. (2/29/12)"

94 points Rhone Report: "A gorgeous '09 Châteauneuf-du-Pape that displays stunning freshness and focus, as well as beautiful purity of fruit, the La Ferme du Mont Côtes Capelan is loaded with sweet cherry, cassis, sappy underbrush, licorice, and freshly snipped flowers on the nose. Upfront, perfumed, and downright pretty aromatically, this has a borderline voluptuous profile on the palate, with a medium to full-bodied mouth feel, beautiful polish and texture, and copious amounts of sweet fruit, yet it remains light, fresh, and clean, without ever feeling heavy or cumbersome. The sweetness to the tannin is also notable and was hard to come by in 2009. Upfront and delicious now, it should be even better in 2-3 years, and drink well for 12-15. Very well done and this estate should be on every Châteauneuf-du-Pape lovers radar! (Mar 2012)"
93 points Robert Parker: "Vedeau's top cuvee is his deep ruby/purple-colored 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan. Revealing a cool climate feel, it offers notes of cool red and black cherries, spring flowers, raspberry liqueur and hints of forest floor as well as lavender. Complex, medium to full-bodied and supple with plenty of sweet tannin, it will be even better in several years and should drink well for 15 years. (Oct 2011)"
91 points Wine Spectator: "[$70 list] Juicy and mouthfilling, with gutsy plum, blackberry and black currant fruit that fans out on the finish, letting pastis, graphite and roasted apple wood check in. A hedonistic wine with serious definition. Best from 2012 through 2023. 320 cases made. (11/15/11)"
92 points Rhone Report: "Seemingly more traditional than the Adrastee, yet with an identical elevage and aging in 1-year-old Burgundy barrels, the 2009 Les Halos de Jupiter Chateauneuf-du-Pape, 100% very old vine Grenache from a plot located between Orange and Courthezon, boasts classical aromas of garrigue, licorice-laced raspberry and currant fruits, wild flowers, saddle leather, and a salty, sea breeze-like minerality that shows up more with air. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with plenty of ripeness that's balanced by solid focus, ripe tannin, and superb freshness, this delicious Chateauneuf-du-Pape shows best with a short decant, and should continue to dish out pleasure over the coming 10-12 years. (Sep 2011)"
90-92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Vivid ruby. High-pitched, spicy aromas of redcurrant, cherry, garrigue and minerals. Fine-grained and precise, offering plenty of fruit without jamminess. This energetic wine finishes with perfumed flavors of redcurrant, bitter cherry and a sneaky herbal nuance. These grapes (90% grenache) come from vines that are reportedly more than 100 years old, from a vineyard in the north-west sector of the appellation. (Mar/Apr 2011)"

Best from 2013 through 2023. 125 cases made. (11/15/11)"
93 points Rhone Report: "Coming from 100+ year-old vines from the La Crau region and aged in 1-year-old burgundy barrels, the 2009 Les Halos de Jupiter Chateauneuf-du-Pape Adrastee delivers a brilliant, complex array of raspberry, red licorice, garrigue, baking spices, and crushed flowers on the nose. Up front and perfumed aromatically, the palate doesn.t lose a beat and shows a medium to full-bodied, rich texture, sweet fruit, and silky tannin on the, lush, heady finish. Overall, this is a thrilling Chateauneuf-du-Pape that should benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and drink well for 12-15 years. (Sep 2011)"
92 points Robert Parker: "The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Adrastee (100% Grenache) reveals more licorice, lavender, plum, fig and kirsch characteristics in its full-bodied, sumptuous personality. More open-knit and forward than the 2010, it should drink well for 10-15 years. (Oct 2011)"

Gains power with air and finishes with very good breadth, energy and lingering spiciness. This elegant Chateauneuf will age well on its balance. (Mar/Apr 2011)"
92 points Rhone Report: "An excellent '09 that.s slightly richer than the Traditional cuvee, the 2009 Domaine Jean Royer Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Prestige, 90% Grenache, 5% Syrah, and 5% Mourvedre aged in a combination of cement tank and barrique, possesses a perfumed, complex profile with loads of minerality and dusty earth qualities balanced by sweet red currant, underbrush, and licorice. Medium+ bodied, silky, and polished, this outstanding Chateauneuf-du-Pape should drink nicely for up to a decade. (Sep 2011)"
91 points Robert Parker: "[$56 list] The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige, which comes from 80- to 100-year-old vines (in contrast to the 45-year-old vines of the Tradition), is essentially an identical blend, and again aged primarily in tank. This is a slightly darker color, with massive amounts of black cherry and strawberry jam notes, and hints of Provencal herbs as well as loamy, sandy soil. A savory, broad, full-bodied wine without a hard edge to be found, it should drink well for 7-8 years and is already irresistible. (Oct 2011)"

91 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Vivid red. Complex, floral-accented bouquet evokes fresh red berries, rhubarb, herbs and Asian spices. Pliant and expansive, offering juicy raspberry and cherry flavors lifted by zesty minerality. Closes silky and sweet, with impressive punch and clarity. (Jan/Feb 2012)"
91 points Wine Spectator: "[$50 list] This is old-school, with a lightly chewy frame to the licorice root, humus, black tea and mulled spice notes that surround the perfumy bitter cherry, blood orange and red currant fruit flavors. Good iron-laced grip on the finish relies more on cut than flesh, but don't be fooled—there's some guts and depth here for the cellar. Best from 2013 through 2026. 300 cases made. (7/31/12)"

92 points Wine Spectator: "Dense and ripe, but well-focused, with velvety plum sauce woven with macerated fig and currant fruit. Lots of anise and violet flavors pump through as well, while a grippy, pebbly feel stays well-integrated and adds length to the finish. Best from 2013 through 2022. 650 cases imported. (9/30/11)"
91 points Rhone Report: "A blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, and the rest a mix of Syrah and Cinsault, the 2009 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Girard is a custom cuvee made by importer Peter Weygandt. Aged in 80% cement tank and 20% in barrel, it's slightly richer and meatier than the standard cuvee and possesses an inky purple color to go with loads of black cherry, licorice, charred meats, and mineral qualities on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, dense, concentrated, and beautifully structured and pure, this outstanding Chateauneuf-du-Pape will be at its best in 3-4 years, and have 10-15 years of overall longevity. (Jun 2012)"
90 points Robert Parker: "[$49 list] ...the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Girard is composed of 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 3% Syrah, and 2% Cinsault.... aged in 80% cement and 20% in barrels. The wines are both potentially outstanding in 2009, exhibiting dark ruby colors and plenty of earth, garrigue and kirsch notes and medium to full body. I thought Weygandt's cuvee had slightly more minerality and tannic structure, no doubt because of the higher Mourvedre component. Both should be drunk during their first 10-12 years of life. (Oct 2011)"

95 points Robert Parker: "One of the top Chateauneuf du Papes of the vintage is the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale-Vigne Centenaires (from 100-year-old vines planted in pure sand). A blend of 90% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Counoise, and Muscardin (a real field blend), this wine is close to rivaling their great 2007. Its stunning blue/purple color (remarkable for Grenache grown in sand) is followed by a full-bodied wine revealing exquisite concentrated notes of incense, lavender, camphor, black cherries and black currant liqueur. Tell-tale licorice and pepper characteristics are also present in this voluptuously textured, fleshy, full-bodied effort that is already drinkable. One of the stars of the vintage, it is capable of lasting 15-20 years. (Oct 2011)"
95 points Rhone Report: "A field blend (90% Grenache and the rest an assortment of varieties) that comes from sandy soils and vines planted in 1902, the 2009 Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Imperiale is thrilling stuff that competes with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Deep purple and opaque in color, it is incredibly floral and mineral-driven on the nose, with deep, ultra-ripe aromas of black cherry, licorice, roasted herb, and damp earth like qualities all emerging over the evening. This is followed by a full-bodied, stunningly concentrated 2009 that has a bright, fresh profile, beautiful texture, and a heady, structured finish that highlights loads of ripe tannin. It took the better part of the evening to really shine (and was just as good on the second day), and ideally should be given 3-5 years in the cellar. It will drink well for 15-20 years or more. (Jun 2012)"

92 points Wine Spectator: "Rich and concentrated, but superfresh and driven, with ample layers of yellow and green apple, fig, pear, melon and heather that meld together as they push through the powerful, lengthy finish. Drink now through 2012. 533 cases made. (10/31/10)"
90 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Pale gold. Vibrant aromas of tangerine, lemon curd and melon, with a smoky, leesy accent and mounting florality. Succulent, smooth and creamy, offering vibrant citrus and melon flavors given clarity by refreshing spiciness. Nicely balanced wine with a tangy, sharply delineated finish. (Jan/Feb 2012)"
