Tempranillo is the classic red wine-producing grape of Spain. It forms the basis not only for such celebrated wines as those from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but also for those from emerging regions such as Toro. The "hottest" red wine region in Spain, however, just may be Priorato in the province of Tarragona, south of Barcelona. Here, century-old plantings of Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan) on slate-and-schist soil are being revived to produce wines of both astonishing power and remarkable finesse.
