Tempranillo is the classic red wine-producing grape of Spain. It forms the basis not only for such celebrated wines as those from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but also for those from emerging regions such as Toro. The "hottest" red wine region in Spain, however, just may be Priorato in the province of Tarragona, south of Barcelona. Here, century-old plantings of Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan) on slate-and-schist soil are being revived to produce wines of both astonishing power and remarkable finesse. More

Medium to full-bodied and ripe, it seems to grow in stature and complexity as it sits in the glass. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. This biodynamically farmed vineyard in the Mentrida appellation (about 30 miles southwest of Madrid) was created in the 1930s. (Jun 2012)"

93 points Neal Martin (Wine Advocate): "The 2001 Vina Ardanza Reserva Especial is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from their vineyards in Fuenmayor and Rioja Baja respectively and it represents only the third vintage to be declared after 1964 and 1973. Aged in American cask for 36 months, it has a bucolic, natural bouquet of bright red cherries, balsamic, mint and a touch of dried honey all with superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful delineation and supple, lithe tannins. The acidity is very well judged and it leads to a pert, tense finish of bitter cherry, loganberry and licorice. This is an outstanding wine drinking perfectly now, but it should age effortlessly. Drink now-2030. (Aug 2012)"

Shows more power and darker fruits on the palate, picking up a touch of singed plum that adds a serious quality to the sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors without costing the wine any of its vibrancy. The long, sweet finish hangs on with very good tenacity. (I also had the chance to revisit some earlier vintages during my recent visit to La Rioja Alta. The 1995 Gran Reserva 890 is showing superb complexity right now, offering exotic floral and spice character and impressive bright minerality. It's destined for a very long life. (Sep/Oct 2010)"

90 points Rhone Report: "A delicious blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Carignan, the 2011 Locations E-1 has a dense, piercing bouquet of palate staining black and blue fruits, violets, bramble, liquid mineral, and new leather that carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, supple, yet beautifully structured and fresh palate. Despite the upfront and easygoing appearance here, it firms up nicely on the finish with a kick of dry tannin (no doubt from the Tempranillo) that keeps everything lively and focused. It will be even better with another year or so in the cellar, and drink nicely for 4-5 years, possibly longer. This serious value is worth seeking out. (Dec 2012)"

Dave Phinney, the mastermind behind Orin Swift (The Prisoner) has once again created a one-of-a-kind wine. While standing on a curb waiting for a taxi at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, Dave noticed the ubiquitous country code stickers on the back of cars. The proverbial light bulb went on for a new idea. That idea was to make a wine combining the best grape varieties from great "locations" in Europe and apply the sticker as the label. What he has created is once again astounding. The first release from this project is a beautiful blend of Garnacha from Priorat, Tempranillo and Garnacha from Rioja, and Cariñena (Carignane) from Ribera del Duero. And since it's from Spain, the value is off the hook. It tastes like a $35 wine but costs less than $20!!

Tasting Notes: You can immediately smell the very pretty floral aromas of violets and purple flowers from the Priorat. Warm, ripe blackberry, boysenberry with a faint smoky, meaty quality. Very rich and complex at this level. Full of ripe, round fruit, displaying the classic hot, arid climate of Spain, like a blast of warm wind carrying savory fragrance and the smells of Spanish cuisine.

They designate this vineyard’s wine as a Crianza, though it has the grandeur and elegance that takes it to a higher level. The lush fruit has scents of tart raspberries and sweet cherry compote, while a prickle of spice keeps it lean and classical in structure. Highly perfumed aromas of cherry, raspberry and baking spices, plus a hint of mocha. Sappy and seamless in texture, with very good depth and clarity to its spicy red fruit flavors. Fine-grained tannins come on late and add shape to the long, penetrating, spice-dominated finish. Pretty tasty right now but this elegant wine's balance bodes well for aging. (Sep/Oct 2011)"

91+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "I am assuming that the 2007 A Torna Dos Pasas is made from the same blend of grapes as the 2008 Viña de Martin Tinto, but I am not sure and it is too close to deadline to check in with José Pastor. In any event, the wine is very good, as it offers up a deep and youthful nose of black cherries, a bit of cranberry, balsam bough, espresso, woodsmoke, fresh herbs and a great base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, complex and still quite youthful, with a rock solid core of fruit, ripe tannins, fine focus and balance and excellent length and grip on the superb finish. This needs a few years to fully blossom, but will prove to be a superb bottle. 2014-2030. (Sep/Oct 2011)"

90 points Wine & Spirits: "A rich and delicious crowd-pleasing style, this is showing a heavy influence of oak, like some other 2007s we tasted. It's layered and powerful with anise and black olive notes over tarry tannins. For braised boar or other gamey meats. (Oct 2011)"

From the unheralded D.O. of Ribeiro in Galicia, this tiny production winery produces both reds (from varietals Caiño, Brancellao, and Ferrol) and whites (Treixadura, Godello, Albariño and Loureiro) from small plots totaling only 2.5 hectares that are located at high elevations on steep granite slopes overlooking the town of Arnoia. Production of this ageworthy Escolma Tinto is under 100 cases.

Notes of liquid minerality, licorice, lavender, Asian spices, and black cherry lead to a supple, savory effort loaded with spice and personality. There is a nicely concealed structure that will allow the wine to evolve for several years although it is approachable now. It will be best from 2013 to 2028. (May 2011)"

Importer notes: "[$135 list] The Doix family originates from Poboleda and has been in the winemaking business in the region for the last 5 generations. As far back as the late 1800's the property has been recognized by the quality of their vinous fruit, but it wasn't until 1998 when Ramon Llagostera took the reigns of the property that the wines began to experience worldwide fame. Like other areas of the Priorat, Poboleda lies at high altitude and is characterized by steep, rock-covered hillsides. The vineyards of Mas Doix lie at between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. The vines are planted on what appears to be pure grey and black slate, with no dirt visible at the surface. Yields are extremely low (as low as 15 hl/ha in some parcels) and re-planting is extremely difficult given the topography and soil structure. The vines vary in age between 70 and 100 years old. Doix Costers de Vineys Velles 2008 is comprised of 50% cariñena, 48% garnacha, 2% merlot. Aged 16 months in new French oak barrels."

Musky, complex and powerfully scented, with floral-accented red and dark berry aromas, complemented by notes of spicecake and minerals. Lush, sweet raspberry and mulberry flavors are given spine by juicy acidity and pick up a bitter chocolate note with air. Dusty tannins add grip to a very long, smoky finish, which leaves sweet red fruit and floral pastille notes behind. This was raised in all new French oak after fermentation in large American oak vats, but the wood is an afterthought. (Nov/Dec 2010)"
