While Port dominates most discussion of Portuguese wine, the Portuguese are indeed drinkers of wine at the table and support a robust wine culture. Quality of both reds and whites has been marginal in the past, but improvement has been dramatic of late, with fresh, aromatic whites emerging, as well as reds that have traded in their former heavy rusticity for a modicum of balance.

Producer notes: "This is a classic Vinho Verde. Light in color with a slight spritz. On the nose it is fruity, light and lively. On the palate it is light [only 9% alcohol], refreshing and delicious. The acidity is refreshing and the wine is great fun. Vinho Verde is traditionally non-vintage and consumed quickly, so the wine on the shelf should always be a fresh bottling. The way to make a proper Vinho Verde is to suppress the malolactic fermentation and inject carbon dioxide at bottling to give the wine its characteristic spritz. The Vinho Verde region is along the Atlantic Coast of Northwestern Portugal. The name translates to 'green wine' because the grapes are harvested slightly under ripe to retain crisp acidity and make wines that go perfectly with the local seafood and the warm summers of Portugal. The traditional Vinho Verde grapes are Loureiro for aroma, Trajadura for body and Padernã [more commonly called Arinto] for acidity. Our blend is Loureiro +/- 50%, Trajadura +/- 40% and Pedernã +/- 10%. Our grapes come from The Braga, Barcelos and Guimãraes which are sub regions within the Vinho Verde appellation."

Not yet reviewed; Wine Advocate on the 2008 vintage: "The 2008 Tinto 'Mariana,' is fancifully named after an historical figure from the 17th century Spanish-Portuguese war. It is a blend of Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro and Alicante Bouschet. It is quite tasty and while on the lighter side, not at all thin... after opening flat and unassuming, it improved considerably with 30 minutes of air, developing a juicy and flavorful red fruit nuance and showing some ripe tannins. It was quite seductive and sexy... Drink now-2016."

Producer notes: "From the Baga grape planted in chalky-clay soils from vines with an average age of forty years. Vinified in stainless steel vats for ten days, it was matured in used casks (650 litres of capacity) for fifteen months. To be dished up with gamey meats as well as other red meat dishes. It will last more than fifteen years."

Marquês de Montemor is a tiny winery located in the province of Alentejo in south-central Portugal. Alentejo is the warmest wine region in Portugal. To preserve the fresh, fruity aromas and flavors, the wine was produced, fermented then aged for 6 months in stainless steel tank. Named after the ruler of the original lands in this area, Marquês de Montemor is made from 40% Aragonês (Tempranillo), 30% Touriga Nacional and 30% Trincadeira. The resulting wine is a fruity, juicy, earthy, balanced little red. Medium bodied with an intense purple color, good ripe, earthy dark berry notes and easy going finish, it is a versatile wine suited for any occasion.

87 points Mark Squires (Wine Advocate): "The 2009 Prazo de Roriz is principally Tinta Barroca (36%) and Tinta Roriz (31%) with 10% Tinta Francisca, 9% each of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional and a smattering of other grapes. Despite the name of the wines, some of the grapes also come from Perdiz, not just Roriz. This year’s version is ripe and meaty, not particularly concentrated, but nicely textured and well balanced. I’m not sure I’m as impressed by this as the last two vintages, but it still drinks well and may yet improve -- something I’ve seen before from this subtle but persistent bottling--and it is tasty. Drink now-2017.

Quinta de Roriz has recently come under the ownership of Prats & Symington, which is what the 'P+S' on the label references. The Symingtons, of course, have been involved in this Quinta for many years, their winemaking team being long responsible for many of the Quinta’s wines. As part of their reorganization of vineyards and branding, the Prazo de Roriz, previously listed under Quinta de Roriz, is now part of the P&S stable and labeled as such. (Dec 2011)"

Mouthwatering and sunny, this pointed and focused wine is clean and intense, with a nicely lingering finish. Simply gripping at the end, it is both refreshing and persistent. In the late 1990s, Spanish winemaker Marcial Dorado had a goal to make the finest Albariño in Galicia, Spain. Unable to find an old vineyard to work with, he was able to find several old-vine vineyards immediately across the Minho River in Portugal, which he subsequently purchased. Dorado comes from several parcels of 30 to 70-year-old Alvarinho near Melgaço. This wine has the compelling floral aromatics of the best Rías Baixas Albariños but offers even more authority.
