It's useful to split Portugal into two "macro" wine regions by drawing a horizontal line about a third of the way down. This separates the northern regions of the Douro, Dão and Bairrada, and the central and southern regions of the Alentejo, Ribatejo, and Estremadura. Very generally speaking, the future for the northern regions lies in focusing on high-quality, top-end terroir wines, while the strength of the southern and central regions is their ability to produce accessible, flavorful wines in large quantities and at affordable prices: New World-style wines with a Portuguese twist.

A bit elevated in alcohol (13.5% here compared to 12.5% for the 2009 and 13.0% for the 2008), it is deep and powerful, fresh and clean. Its depth makes it immediately impressive, but despite the minor differences, I did think the alcohol showed just a bit here and there, at least in comparison to other vintages. It is still very fine. The 2011 looks like a step up, a sure fire 90 pointer, but at the time seen, it was so unevolved that I thought it was a bit unfair to review. Drink now-2017. (Dec 2012)"

Importer notes: "Alvarinho went from zero to 60 in terms of market penetration and now there are many indifferent examples available along with benchmarks like Soalheiro. Anselmo makes a number of different styles of Alvarinho and we selected his entry level for its precise rendition of the form and all around lip-smacking goodness. Producer notes: "This is a classic Vinho Verde. Light in color with a slight spritz. On the nose it is fruity, light and lively. On the palate it is light [only 9% alcohol], refreshing and delicious. The acidity is refreshing and the wine is great fun. Vinho Verde is traditionally non-vintage and consumed quickly, so the wine on the shelf should always be a fresh bottling. The way to make a proper Vinho Verde is to suppress the malolactic fermentation and inject carbon dioxide at bottling to give the wine its characteristic spritz. The Vinho Verde region is along the Atlantic Coast of Northwestern Portugal. The name translates to 'green wine' because the grapes are harvested slightly under ripe to retain crisp acidity and make wines that go perfectly with the local seafood and the warm summers of Portugal. The traditional Vinho Verde grapes are Loureiro for aroma, Trajadura for body and Padernã [more commonly called Arinto] for acidity. Our blend is Loureiro +/- 50%, Trajadura +/- 40% and Pedernã +/- 10%. Our grapes come from The Braga, Barcelos and Guimãraes which are sub regions within the Vinho Verde appellation."

San Francisco Chronicle: "Cossart Gordon, arguably the oldest of the Madeira shippers and now another of the Madeira Wine Co. labels, is better known for its nonvintage wines, but this 1997 is full of briny tang -- more than you'd expect for the somewhat sweet Bual. Lots of iodine and hazelnut, papaya and burnt orange, with an intense acidity to enliven it. (12/19/10)"

Intensely flavored fruit is silky but nicely delineated; offers a fresh flavor of orange peel. Not at all thick, but brisk and vibrant. Finishes clean and long, with hints of smoked nuts and marzipan. This has far stronger material than the 10-Year-Old, which seemed clumsy and dull in comparison."

The bouquet is deep and ethereal, as it offers up a fine mélange of orange zest, dried red berries, Fonseca’s signature note of fennel, a complex base of soil, exotic spices and a lovely, Sherry-like note of nuttiness. On the palate the wine is fullish, focused and brilliantly delineated, with lovely sweetness on the attack, a fine core of fruit, great complexity, and a very cool and balanced profile on the long, classy and complex finish. A classic Fonseca nose dominated by an exuberant, hedonistic fruitiness, a powerful redolence of dark dense blackberry and blackcurrant which slowly releases a heady mix of spicy and herbal aromas, seductive notes of coffee and cocoa, hints of prune and wild scents of gumcistus. The thick velvety tannins give the wine a voluptuous density, integrating effortlessly with the sumptuous infusion of blackberry jam, dark chocolate and liquorice which coats the palate. The wine is superb in 1970, as it displays a bouquet of voluptuous complexity, offering up scents of black cherry, plum, cedar, fresh mint, chocolate, a bit of tobacco leaf, and lovely, estery floral topnotes. On the palate the wine is focused and opulent, with fine framing acidity adding a note of precision to the attack, and with excellent freshness and balance on the softly tannic, long and creamy finish. This is a classic example of Graham’s in its more extroverted and fruit-driven style, and it should continue to drink well for the next forty or more years. 2003-2050. (Jan/Feb 2007)"

Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1970 is a monumental vintage port and one of the greats of the vintage. It begs to be drunk now, although it will last for at least another two decades. (Jan 1989)"

Continuing full and broad. An underappreciated classic, as good as anything from 1963 or 1966. This will last a lifetime! (Issue #33; 2011)"
