Situated just south of Tuscany and adjacent to that region, Umbrian topography shares similarities with its northern neighbor, but wine culture is a bit different. For one thing, its most famous wine is not red, but rather a dry white, Orvieto. However, reds play an important role here, too, with the Sagrantino di Montefalco taking pride of place. There is also a handful of interesting non-DOC wines issuing from this region as well, most notably a rich, regal red from Lamborghini of automotive fame.

'Wine of the Week,' Las Vegas Review-Journal: "Grechetto 60%, Procanico 40%. In the glass: Santa Cristina Bianco is a fine, pale almost clear citrine-yellow color with a star-bright core going out into a very faint, nearly glass-clear meniscus with medium viscosity. On the nose: Fresh, crisp and tangy are things that immediately spring to mind here for this highly aromatic wine, with lots of zippy kiwi, pomelo and general citrus zest; also white currants, crushed cloudberries, hints of honeysuckle and orange blossom, then zucchini flowers and crushed fine granite for minerality. On the palate: It is very aromatic as it hits the center palate with loads of zesty pears, citrus rind, Granny Smith apples and excellent acidity to carry that backbone in the wine right through the relatively soft and supple midpalate into a finish that is chock-full of vibrant white currants, stone fruit and kiwi crush with just a touch of minerality. It is entirely clean and crisp to the end. Odds and ends: The Antinori family has been making wine in Tuscany for more than six centuries in an unbroken line of 26 generations since 1385. I think it is fair to say that this qualifies them to know how to make great wine. And yet the family was one of a handful of great winemakers that knew a modern approach was needed for Italian wine to succeed worldwide. Three Glasses, Gambero Rosso: "Lamborghini's Campoleone, a sangiovese-merlot blend from the Trasimeno hills, is a wine of pedigree which, like all thoroughbreds, can perform erratically. There's genius on the one hand and decadence on the other. When the year is right, the wine has few equals and goes beyond being impressive to take you by storm, and sometimes even knock you sideways... The '04 Campoleone is a deep ruby colour. The nose has extreme complexity and refinement, with small red and black berry fruit, nuances of new oak and swaths of balsam, all of which continually alternate and intermingle, to glorious effect. The palate is full of flesh, showing vibrant and deeply fruity, with a superb tannic weave. It has a clear stamp of Bordeaux about it. (2007)"

92 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "The 2004 Campoleone, the estate’s signature wine, is simply gorgeous. This blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot spent 12 months in French oak. It is a firmly structured wine with superb density on the palate, where layers of tobacco, dark cherries, earthiness, smoke, licorice and toasted oak all come to life. The tannins finish slightly dry and astringent, likely a result of an overly exuberant use of French oak. Still, this is a beautifully delineated, focused Campoleone. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. One of the oldest of Italian white wines, much mentioned throughout history, this Orvieto is a blend of Procanico 50%, Verdello 25% and Grechetto 25%. Each grape varieties are cultivated and vinificated separately, assembled in January before bottling. Color: Clear pale yellow with natural gold highlights. Aroma: Fruity, fragrant, with hints of wild mint and aromatic herbs. Flavor: Dry but with a subtly bitter aftertaste. Suggested accompaniments: Delightful as an aperitif or with tasty local dishes - lasagne, spaghetti with seasonal vegetable sauces, asparagus crêpes, country style chicken or rabbit, stewed cod and other fish dishes; fresh cheeses.
